Rineloricaria castroi is a slender, leaf-litter-coloured whiptail catfish from the Trombetas River drainage of the Brazilian Amazon — a species whose pencil-thin body and long, bristle-tipped caudal filaments make it one of the more elegant Loricariinae available to dedicated catfish hobbyists. Described from the protected waters of the Reserva Biológica de Trombetas in Pará state, it has a restricted known range yet carries an IUCN Least Concern assessment; its particular demands for clean water and a sense of current make it a rewarding but slightly exacting aquarium subject.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria castroi was described by Isaäc J.H. Isbrücker and Han Nijssen in 1984, with the type locality recorded as the Trapiche da Reserva Biológica de Trombetas, Rio Trombetas, Estado do Pará, Brazil — a protected nature reserve on the lower Trombetas River, a right-bank tributary of the Amazon. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Rineloricaria castroi Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1984 as the valid name. The earlier combination Hemiloricaria castroi, used in some older trade and scientific literature, is treated as a synonym; Hemiloricaria was at one point recognised as a subgenus or separate genus for some Rineloricaria species but is not currently upheld at genus rank in the major catalogues.

Rineloricaria is a large, species-rich genus of whiptail catfishes in the subfamily Loricariinae, which is distinguished within Loricariidae by its highly depressed, elongated body form, absence of an adipose fin in most species, and long, thin caudal filaments extending from the upper and lower caudal-fin rays. Armbruster (2004) placed Loricariinae as one of the major subfamilial groupings within the family, noting its derived body plan as an adaptation for life on soft substrates.

The species epithet castroi honours Ricardo Macedo Corrêa e Castro, a Brazilian zoologist and ichthyologist and full professor at the Universidade de São Paulo, who collected the type material.

Morphology

Rineloricaria castroi reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 6.5 in (about 7 in total length), making it a medium-sized member of a large genus that ranges from around 3 in to over 12 in SL. The body is highly dorsoventrally flattened — essentially a living wedge — tapering from a broad, shield-like head to an increasingly narrow caudal peduncle that terminates in a deeply forked tail with elongated filamentous extensions on the upper and lower lobes.

Coloration is typically sandy brown to grey-brown across the body, overlaid with irregular darker spots or mottling that provides excellent camouflage against sand and leaf-litter substrates. The fins are semi-transparent with dark banding or spotting. A key distinguishing character noted by ScotCat is that R. castroi, unlike the closely similar R. phoxocephala, has dark banding on the pectoral and ventral fins rather than hyaline (clear) fins — a subtle but consistent difference.

The skin bears a covering of overlapping bony scutes in the typical loricariid pattern. Odontodes (tiny spine-like skin teeth) are present across the body and become more developed on the pectoral-fin spine and cheeks of mature males. Sexual dimorphism becomes obvious in mature fish: males develop conspicuous bristle-like odontodes on the snout (particularly along the rostral plate margins), the pectoral-fin spines, and the lateral body surfaces, giving the head a noticeably broader, spiny appearance compared with the smooth-snouted females.

Habitat

The known range of Rineloricaria castroi is restricted to the Trombetas River basin, a significant right-bank tributary of the Amazon in western Pará state, Brazil. The Trombetas flows northward from the Guiana Shield uplands before joining the Amazon near Oriximiná. Much of the lower Trombetas is protected by the Reserva Biológica de Trombetas, one of Brazil's strictly protected federal reserves, which encompasses the species' type locality.

The Trombetas carries characteristically dark, blackwater-influenced water in its upper reaches, transitioning to clearwater conditions in some tributaries; water is typically soft, acidic to circumneutral (pH approximately 5.5–7.0), and warm (75–84 °F). The river has an extensive floodplain with seasonal inundation, and the fish is associated with shallow, sandy-bottomed margins and leaf-litter accumulations near submerged roots and debris tangles.

FishBase records a preferred temperature range of 68–75 °F, which appears conservative relative to the tropical latitude of the Trombetas; the ScotCat factsheet suggests 79–84 °F, consistent with a warm Amazonian tributary. In practice, many Rineloricaria species tolerate a broader thermal range and prefer moderate water movement — gentle current rather than the extreme rheophily of some upland loricariids.

Feeding

Rineloricaria castroi is an omnivore with a strong preference for vegetable and detritus-based foods, typical of the Loricariinae. In the wild, the flattened, subterminal mouth is used to graze algal biofilm, scrape fine periphyton from sand and detritus particles, and consume small invertebrates and decaying organic matter from the substrate. The elongated body is well suited to pressing flat against the substrate while feeding, minimising exposure to current and predators.

In captivity, the diet should reflect this omnivorous character. Vegetable foods form the core: blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, peas, and spinach are all accepted; sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based pellets should be provided daily. Supplement these with frozen or live foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, mosquito larvae — two to three times per week. High-quality sinking catfish tablets and flake food are also accepted when they settle to the bottom.

Whiptail catfishes in general do not thrive on a purely vegetarian diet; some animal protein is needed for long-term health and conditioning for breeding. Avoid overfeeding, as uneaten food deteriorates water quality rapidly in tanks maintained for these water-quality-sensitive fish.

Mating

Rineloricaria species are cave-spawners, and courtship follows the pattern common to the genus. Males become territorial as breeding condition is reached, defending preferred cave sites — a hollow length of PVC pipe, a bamboo tube, a natural crevice in a piece of hardscape — from rival males while simultaneously displaying to females.

Mature males are unmistakable: the developed bristle odontodes along the snout margins and pectoral-fin spines give them a noticeably spiny, broad-nosed appearance quite different from the smooth-profiled females. These hypertrophied odontodes appear to function in both male–male competition (interlocking during wrestling bouts) and mate-assessment signalling. A conditioned male may spend considerable time at the entrance of his chosen cave, displaying with slightly spread fins and performing slow, deliberate movements.

Females in breeding condition, recognisable by their fuller abdomens and the absence of bristles on the snout, approach candidate males and assess the cave before consenting to spawn. In a community tank with limited cave sites, male competition can become intense; providing one cave per male and additional broken-line-of-sight structures reduces conflict.

Breeding

Rineloricaria castroi is a cave-spawner with paternal egg-guarding, consistent with the reproductive biology documented for numerous congeners. After the pair have spawned inside the selected cavity, the female departs and plays no further role. The male fans the adhesive egg clutch with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygen supply and removes infertile or fungused eggs.

According to information collated by ScotCat, incubation in Rineloricaria species takes approximately 4–5 days. Eggs hatch and fry emerge still bearing a substantial yolk sac; at this stage the male can be removed. The fry are recognisable miniatures of the adults, lying flat on the substrate. They begin actively grazing within a few days of yolk absorption and can be fed algae wafers crushed to a fine powder, spirulina powder, and very finely chopped blanched vegetables.

Breeding success is improved by maintaining water quality scrupulously (Rineloricaria are intolerant of nitrate accumulation), providing abundant caves at or slightly above substrate level, and conditioning adults on a protein-rich, varied diet for two to three weeks before attempting a spawning trigger. A slight temperature increase (34–36 °F above the maintenance level) paired with a water change using slightly cooler, softer water can stimulate spawning attempts.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria castroi is an occasionally available species in specialist catfish circles, most often through importers working the Trombetas or broader Amazon trade and through dedicated hobbyist networks. It is not a mainstream trade fish. Its requirements are straightforward but unforgiving of neglect: it is one of those species that ScotCat correctly notes has 'excessive demands on good water quality'.

A tank of 20–25 US gal is adequate for a pair; a group of four to six individuals benefits from 40 US gal or more. The aquarium should have a fine sand substrate — whiptails spend most of their time on or near the bottom and a coarse gravel substrate causes wear to the delicate ventral surface. Moderate water movement from a gentle powerhead or spray bar is beneficial. Décor should include smooth river pebbles, driftwood, dried leaf litter (Indian almond leaves, oak leaves), and multiple caves of appropriate size — PVC tubes (1–1.5 in internal diameter for adults) are reliable and allow observation of the egg-guarding male.

Water parameters should reflect the soft, warm Trombetas: temperature 75–84 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, very soft to moderately soft water (below 10°dH). Weekly water changes of 25–30% are mandatory; skipping changes results in nitrate accumulation that stresses this sensitive species. Compatible tankmates are peaceful, non-fin-nipping species of comparable size: small tetras, pencilfish, small rasboras, and Corydoras are ideal. Avoid large or aggressive fish that would harass the whiptail.

The elongated filamentous caudal extensions are fragile and are easily damaged in transit or by abrasive surfaces, and the fin tips are a common site for bacterial infection in newly acquired fish; a quarantine period in clean, medicated-if-necessary water before introduction to the display tank is advisable.

Conservation

Rineloricaria castroi is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (Salvador, 2023, IUCN version 2025-2), with the assessment noting that despite limited information on this species specifically, it has a wide enough range and faces no apparent widespread threats to warrant a more sensitive category at this time.

Its occurrence within the Reserva Biológica de Trombetas — a strictly protected federal reserve — provides a meaningful degree of habitat protection for at least part of the known range. However, the broader Trombetas basin and adjoining areas of western Pará face pressure from gold mining (garimpo), which directly contaminates river systems with mercury and causes catastrophic sedimentation; deforestation; and illegal fishing pressure.

Rineloricaria species as a group are not among the primary targets of the ornamental trade in the way that Hypancistrus or large Baryancistrus species are, so commercial collection is unlikely to be a significant pressure. Habitat quality — specifically sediment-free, well-oxygenated, sandy-bottomed margins — is the critical variable for this benthic specialist, and any processes that increase fine-sediment loading in the Trombetas system represent a direct threat to its microhabitat.
