Rineloricaria microlepidogaster is a slender, elongate whiptail catfish from the cool rivers and streams of southern Brazil and adjacent Argentina — a fish that looks more like a wisp of driftwood than an armoured catfish until it moves. Among the larger members of its diverse genus, it inhabits rocky-bottomed streams and inhabits a range of microhabitats from swift riffles to sluggish, even impacted waterways, giving it an ecological resilience unusual in a group often characterised as sensitive.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria microlepidogaster was originally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1904 as Loricaria microlepidogaster in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (volume 17, part 3, number 1, page 283, plate 15, figure 4), with the type locality cited as Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The combination was subsequently transferred to Rineloricaria Bleeker, 1862, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Rineloricaria microlepidogaster (Regan, 1904), with Loricaria microlepidogaster Regan, 1904 as its objective synonym.

The species belongs to Rineloricaria's 'rocky group', a cluster of species characterised by asymmetrical tooth cusps, a plated abdomen, and a spotted fin pattern — features that distinguish them from several congeners in the same drainage (Rodriguez & Reis, 2008). Within the rocky group, R. microlepidogaster is separated from close relatives by a combination of characters: asymmetrical cusps (vs. nearly symmetrical in R. aequalicuspis), a spotted fin pattern (vs. a single dark distal band in R. baliola), relatively narrow head (width 74.7–83.5% of head length), 5–11 teeth per jaw ramus, and a plated belly (vs. naked in R. malabarbai).

Rineloricaria belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, which contains the whiptail catfishes — generally elongate, dorsoventrally flattened fish with a long, whip-like caudal extension (absent in some species) that distinguishes them at a glance from the rounder-bodied Hypostominae.

Morphology

R. microlepidogaster reaches a maximum recorded length of 7.5 in SL, though PlanetCatfish cites typical specimens at roughly 3.5 in SL — the larger figure from FishBase likely represents the extreme end of the range for large adults. The body is extremely depressed and elongated, the head wedge-shaped and broad, tapering sharply to a narrow, elongate caudal peduncle. The upper and lower surfaces of the body are protected by overlapping bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows; the abdomen bears plates (a diagnostic feature within the rocky group distinguishing it from the naked-bellied congeners R. malabarbai and R. maquinensis).

Coloration is cryptic: a mottled or spotted pattern of dark brown on a tan or grey background covers the dorsal surface, and all fins carry a spotted pattern of dark marks on a paler ground — another diagnostic character separating this species from R. baliola, which has a single broad dark distal band rather than spots. The caudal fin does not terminate in an elongated filament (distinguishing it from R. pentamaculata, where the dorsal unbranched principal caudal ray is produced as a filament).

The interopercular odontodes — small spines behind the gill cover — are enlarged and more prominent in males, especially during the breeding season, and are used in male–male interactions and in brood guarding. Breeding males also develop odontodes along the snout margin.

Habitat

The species is known from the Laguna dos Patos drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil — a large coastal drainage system that empties into the large coastal Patos lagoon in the far south of Brazil — and has also been recorded from the Paraná basin in Argentina (Rodriguez & Reis, 2008; FishBase). The Laguna dos Patos system encompasses a diverse network of rivers and streams ranging from rocky highland tributaries to lowland floodplain channels.

Within this range, R. microlepidogaster is documented from watercourses with slow to fast flow, clear to brown water, and rocky, sandy, or muddy bottom — an unusually broad microhabitat tolerance for a Rineloricaria. It has been encountered in polluted waters (Rodriguez & Reis, 2008), suggesting meaningful resilience to degraded conditions. Rocky-bottomed sections of streams with moderate current appear to be the preferred habitat, consistent with its placement in the 'rocky group' of the genus.

Water conditions in the southern Brazilian highland streams are notably cooler than Amazonian conditions: FishBase records the temperature range as 72–79 °F, with pH 5.8–7.8 and hardness up to around 20 dH — parameters reflecting the seasonal variability of this more temperate subtropical zone.

Feeding

Like all Rineloricaria, R. microlepidogaster is an algae and detritus grazer. In the wild it scrapes periphyton — the complex community of algae, bacteria, fungi, and fine organic matter that encrusts submerged surfaces — from rocks, woody debris, and the substrate. The multicusped teeth of Loricariinae are well adapted to this mode, providing fine rasping action on hard, encrusted biofilms.

In the aquarium, a diet similar to that used for other whiptail catfishes is appropriate: algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking foods form the dietary base. Blanched vegetables — courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, green peas — are readily accepted. Unlike the xylophagous Panaqolus or Panaque, Rineloricaria does not require driftwood as a dietary component, though the presence of some submerged wood provides beneficial biofilm and structure. Small live or frozen invertebrate foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worm) are a useful conditioning supplement before breeding, as the genus accepts some animal protein.

The species is not aggressive toward food and may lose out to faster, more competitive feeders; sinking foods placed near where the fish rests are advisable.

Mating

Rineloricaria species are well known for paternal tube-spawning, and R. microlepidogaster is expected to follow the same broadly documented pattern of the genus. Males establish and defend tubular cavities as spawning sites — in the aquarium these are typically represented by open-ended PVC or bamboo tubes, ceramic spawning caves, or hollow sections of driftwood.

A gravid female is broader-bodied and noticeably rounder when viewed from above. Males develop more elaborate interopercular odontodes and snout odontodes when in breeding condition, and territorial chases and brief mouth-locking skirmishes among males are normal. The male entices the female into his chosen tube; courtship involves the male positioning himself in the tube and displaying to the female at its entrance.

PlanetCatfish notes that for the genus generally, the male's enlarged pelvic fins may play a role in fertilisation in fast-flowing water by physically shielding the egg mass and preventing sperm dispersal by current — an adaptation consistent with the rocky-stream habitat of this species.

Breeding

In captivity, most Rineloricaria spawn in open-ended tubes, and R. microlepidogaster should respond to the same approach. No specific breeding reports for this species are registered on PlanetCatfish, consistent with its rarity in the hobby, but the general Rineloricaria pattern is well established from commonly kept congeners such as R. lanceolata and R. parva.

After the female deposits adhesive eggs inside the male's territory, she is typically expelled and the male undertakes sole brood care — fanning the clutch with his fins, removing infertile or fungused eggs, and defending the site. Clutch sizes in the genus are typically 50–150 eggs depending on species and female size. Incubation at 72–75 °F runs approximately 7–10 days. Fry are miniature versions of the adults and can be raised on fine sinking foods and biofilm from surfaces; the male may continue to guard the fry for a brief period after hatching before they disperse.

Conditioning adults with a varied diet including some protein-rich live or frozen foods, and providing a modest temperature fluctuation (a 36–37 °F drop followed by gradual warming) in conjunction with frequent partial water changes, helps simulate seasonal breeding cues in this subtropical species.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria microlepidogaster is an uncommon fish in the trade, though it is in commercial use in South America. A suitable aquarium should reflect its cool, clear-to-brown-water subtropical habitat: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. A substrate of fine gravel or coarse sand with scattered flat smooth stones mimicking a rocky stream bed is ideal. Driftwood and leaf litter are beneficial additions.

Because this species tolerates a relatively wide range of conditions including modestly degraded water, it is not among the most demanding loricariids, but clean water with low ammonia and nitrite remains essential. A tank of 20 US gal or more is suitable for a pair or small group. Males may be territorial with conspecifics, so multiple tubes or caves spaced apart help manage this. Filtration should maintain good flow without creating dangerously strong turbulence.

Compatible tankmates should be peaceful and of similar temperament. Other subtropical South American species are good matches: Corydoras paleatus, smaller Ancistrus species, peaceful tetras and characins adapted to cooler conditions. The species is compatible with planted aquaria and does not damage plants. Its flattened, cryptic form makes it an interesting display animal that often positions itself flat against a surface, mimicking a leaf or piece of wood, making it surprisingly easy to overlook despite its size.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria microlepidogaster as Least Concern in 2018, noting its presence across the Laguna dos Patos system of southern Brazil and in the Paraná basin in Argentina, and its documented tolerance of polluted habitats as a factor reducing vulnerability to habitat degradation. No population data were available to indicate a significant decline.

The Laguna dos Patos drainage of Rio Grande do Sul is one of Brazil's most heavily impacted river systems, subject to intensive agriculture (rice, soya), urban and industrial effluent, and extensive riparian deforestation. The species' documented occurrence in degraded waters suggests it persists under conditions that eliminate many more specialist loricariids. Despite this resilience, severe and ongoing habitat modification in the drainage — particularly sedimentation of rocky-bottomed streams that represent the core habitat of the rocky-group Rineloricaria — remains a concern for long-term population viability. The Paraná basin populations in Argentina add range security.
