The Makokola Reef population

Genyochromis mento "Makokola Reef" is the Makokola Reef population of Genyochromis mento, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the southern part of the lake. It is the same species as Genyochromis mento, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Genyochromis mento is a small, slate-grey mbuna endemic to Lake Malawi and one of the lake's strangest predators: it makes its living by ambushing other cichlids and biting chunks out of their fins, occasionally rasping off scales as well. It is the only member of its genus, ranges across nearly every habitat in the lake, and is famous among biologists for evolving its fin-eating habit entirely independently of the better-known scale-eaters of Lake Tanganyika. Common in the wild but almost absent from aquariums, it is one of the few Malawi cichlids that genuinely cannot be kept with anything else.
