Taxonomy & naming
Placidochromis nigribarbis was described in 2004 by Mark Hanssens, in his chapter 'The deep-water Placidochromis species' (pages 104-197) in Jos Snoeks's edited volume The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy (Cichlid Press, El Paso). That single work named a very large cohort of deep-living Placidochromis at once, and nigribarbis was among them. The genus Placidochromis was erected by Digby Lewis in 1982 for Malawi haplochromines of generally calm, unspecialised appearance — the type species is Placidochromis johnstoni — and it sits in the tribe Haplochromini, part of the lake's vast non-mbuna 'hap' radiation. Genus establishment: Digby Lewis, 1982; the deep-water assemblage to which nigribarbis belongs was subsequently revised as a whole by Hanssens (2004). Within Hanssens's informal morphological groupings of the deep-water Placidochromis, the species is separated from its neighbours chiefly by proportional body measurements and meristic (fin-ray and scale) counts rather than by any single dramatic feature, since colour fades badly in preserved, deep-trawled material. Morphology
Placidochromis nigribarbis is a small cichlid on the standard deep-water Placidochromis plan: a fusiform, moderately compressed body, a gently sloping head profile, and jaws set for picking rather than crushing prey. A dark chin or throat marking of the kind the name implies would be one of the few pigment features that can still be read on a faded, preserved trawl specimen, which may explain why it became the species' defining character in a group otherwise diagnosed mostly by body measurements. As with the rest of the Hanssens (2004) cohort, the description rests mainly on proportional measurements — head, snout, jaw and cheek dimensions expressed as percentages of standard or head length — and on meristic counts, because pigment is muted in these dim, deep-living fish and is largely lost once specimens are preserved. Notes on breeding coloration and sexual dimorphism are correspondingly thin for the species; no specific measured maximum length is confirmed here; comparable deep-water congeners from the Hanssens (2004) revision run roughly 3–4.5 in SL.
Habitat
The species is a Lake Malawi endemic recorded from a locality malawi.si records as 'Mid-North Station' — most likely a fisheries or research trawl-survey station in the middle-northern part of the lake rather than a shoreline place name. 'Mid-North Station' reads as a survey-station label rather than a named bay or village, consistent with how offshore trawl surveys of Lake Malawi's central-to-northern basin have historically recorded catch locations by station number or descriptive shorthand rather than by shoreline toponym; on that reading the species is likely a genuinely open-water, offshore deep-dweller rather than one tied to a specific bay. Like the other deep-water Placidochromis revised by Hanssens, it belongs to a community that lives and breeds in the lake's dimly lit deeper layers rather than in the accessible, well-oxygenated shallows familiar to divers and aquarists — over and around soft sediment, well below the wave-washed rocky margins. Lake Malawi is permanently stratified, and below roughly 656–820 ft the water is anoxic, so the deep-water cichlid community is squeezed into a band of intermediate depth. Because deep-water sampling of the lake remains patchy, the species' true range may well be wider than the handful of documented records suggest; on present evidence it should be treated as a narrowly documented, deep-dwelling endemic rather than a genuinely single-site fish.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study has been published for Placidochromis nigribarbis. Placidochromis as a genus are mostly invertebrate-feeders and generalist micropredators that sift sand or glean small prey from the substrate, and the deep-water members of the Hanssens revision are thought to forage over soft sediment for benthic invertebrates and other small organisms in the gloom. Related deep-water Placidochromis sit at trophic levels around 3.2-3.3 on FishBase-style estimates, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates rather than fish or plant matter. For nigribarbis specifically, feeding ecology is inferred from its relatives and its habitat — a small benthic invertivore working the deep sediment surface — rather than recorded from stomach contents or direct observation.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been described for Placidochromis nigribarbis. Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids, including Placidochromis, are overwhelmingly maternal mouthbrooders in which males court females with displays and the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth, so nigribarbis is expected to follow that pattern. In many sand-dwelling haps, males establish temporary display sites on the bottom and attract passing females; whether the deep-water Placidochromis build any kind of spawning arena, or simply pair briefly over open sediment, is not documented. In the perpetual low light of its habitat, visual courtship signals are presumably muted compared with the vivid displays of shallow-water mbuna. What can be said with confidence is only what the genus and the wider flock make near-certain: a brief, polygynous mouthbrooding system rather than pair-bonded biparental care.
Breeding
There is no published account of spawning, clutch size or fry development specific to Placidochromis nigribarbis. By the consistent biology of Lake Malawi haplochromines, it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates a relatively small clutch of large, yolky eggs in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, releasing fully formed free-swimming fry and continuing to shelter them in her mouth when threatened for a short period afterward. Clutch sizes in comparable small deep-water haps run from perhaps a few dozen to a hundred eggs. None of this has been measured for nigribarbis, which has not been bred in captivity or studied in the wild for reproduction; the description here is extrapolated from the genus and the broader Malawi mouthbrooding flock rather than recorded for the species itself.
In the aquarium
Placidochromis nigribarbis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a deep-water endemic known mainly from trawled or dredged museum specimens, not a fish collected alive for the trade, and it has no established hobby name, husbandry literature or breeding history. Any keeping notes can only be generic to the genus.
The Placidochromis species that actually are kept — chiefly shallow-water fish such as Placidochromis electra and Placidochromis phenochilus — are valued as relatively peaceful, sand-sifting haps that do well in spacious aquaria with a deep sand bed, hard alkaline water (pH roughly 7.8-8.6, moderately hard) and temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, alongside other non-aggressive Malawi haps. A deep-water species like nigribarbis, adapted to cool, dim conditions tens of metres down, would in principle be far more demanding and is not a realistic aquarium subject. The honest summary is that this is a fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest — documented from the lake's depths, but not part of hobby experience.
Conservation
Placidochromis nigribarbis has not been confidently assessed here against the IUCN Red List, and no status should be assumed for it. Many of the deep-water Placidochromis named by Hanssens in 2004 have subsequently been evaluated as Data Deficient — the assessors judging that too little is known about range, population and ecology to rate extinction risk — and that is a plausible fate for this species too, but it should not be stated as fact without checking the current IUCN listing directly. Its documented locality means that, if the record reflects a genuinely narrow range, the species would be inherently vulnerable to local disturbance; but it is at least as likely to be under-sampled in a habitat that is hard to survey. Lake Malawi as a whole faces well-documented pressures — heavy artisanal and commercial fishing, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, and the slow expansion of the lake's deoxygenated deep layer — and deep-water trawling in particular can affect benthic cichlid communities with nowhere shallower to retreat. The responsible position is that this is a poorly known endemic in need of the kind of targeted deep-water survey the whole Placidochromis deep-water group still needs.
