Taxonomy & naming
Rhamphochromis sp. "Maldeco" has no scientific name, no describing author, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It belongs to Rhamphochromis, the pike-like open-water predatory genus erected by C. Tate Regan in 1922, currently recognised as containing around five valid, formally described species alongside a substantial tail of undescribed field forms that resist confident species-level identification even under expert examination. The qualifier "Maldeco" most plausibly references Maldeco Fisheries, a commercial trawling company long operating out of the South East Arm area of Lake Malawi; trawl bycatch from operations of this kind has historically been a route by which unidentified deep and open-water haplochromines, including Rhamphochromis, Diplotaxodon and Alticorpus material, reached collectors and aquarium exporters under informal, locality- or source-based trade names rather than taxonomic ones. This connection is presented as the most plausible reading of the name rather than a documented fact, and this population has not been matched with confidence to any described species.
Morphology
This form follows the standard Rhamphochromis body plan: an elongate, laterally compressed, near-cylindrical body, a pointed head, and large jaws carrying prominent, widely spaced canine-like teeth, together with the genus's diagnostic beak-like forward expansion of the premaxillae. No distinguishing morphological character beyond its source and locality has been documented for this form, unlike some other unassigned Rhamphochromis populations that carry a named distinguishing trait (fin length, colour, head shape). Detailed colour has not been published; Rhamphochromis in general show a metallic sheen on fresh, well-conditioned fish, with brighter nuptial tones expected in breeding males by analogy with better-known congeners, but this has not been confirmed for this population specifically.
Habitat
Rhamphochromis sp. "Maldeco" is recorded from the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, a broad, comparatively deep southeastern basin shared between Malawi and Mozambique that has long supported commercial trawl fisheries for usipa, chambo and other food fish. Rhamphochromis as a genus is the pelagic specialist of the Malawi flock, and material linked to trawl operations in this basin is understood to come from open, offshore water rather than the nearshore littoral. Genus-wide depth records run from a few metres down past 328 ft depending on species; where this specific population sits within that range has not been separately documented. The surrounding water carries Lake Malawi's characteristic hard, strongly alkaline chemistry.
Feeding
As with other Rhamphochromis, this form is presumed to be a pursuit predator of small open-water fish rather than a plankton grazer or substrate feeder, chiefly the lake's keystone forage species, the shoaling cyprinid usipa (Engraulicypris sardella), together with juvenile utaka (Copadichromis and allies). Turner and colleagues describe the genus broadly as 'streamlined elongated predators of fish and zooplankton,' with real divergence within it: smaller individuals and some species lean more heavily on crustacean zooplankton, while larger, bigger-toothed forms are committed fish-eaters their entire lives. Trawl-caught South East Arm material of this kind is typically taken over open, offshore water where usipa shoals concentrate, consistent with a fish exploiting the genus's characteristic pelagic pursuit-predator niche. No feeding study specific to this population has been published; this account follows the well-documented genus pattern rather than direct observation of the form itself.
Mating
Courtship has not been described for this form. By analogy with the wider genus, it is presumed polygynandrous with no lasting pair bond, territorial males displaying to females over open water rather than at a fixed rock territory. Researchers who have kept Rhamphochromis in captivity, including Turner and colleagues, document them as extremely aggressive toward their own kind, a behaviour that matters far more in a confined tank than over the lake's open pelagic, where a losing fish can simply swim away. Mixing closely related or unidentified Rhamphochromis carries a further, well-documented risk: given how readily the wider Malawi haplochromine flock hybridises, keeping single, clearly identified populations together rather than mixed 'assorted' groups is the safer practice, though nothing form-specific about this South East Arm population's own courtship behaviour has been recorded.
Breeding
Rhamphochromis sp. "Maldeco" is treated as a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with its genus and the Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation generally. Following spawning, the female is presumed to take fertilised eggs into her mouth and brood them alone; documented brooding periods for better-known Rhamphochromis run roughly three to four weeks before free-swimming fry are released, with no defined spawning season reported for the genus. That lack of a fixed season, together with relatively fast stock turnover, is part of why Rhamphochromis has drawn some aquaculture interest historically. No clutch counts or fry-size data specific to this South East Arm form have been published; this account follows genus-level inference rather than direct observation of the population's breeding biology.
In the aquarium
Rhamphochromis sp. "Maldeco" is not established in the hobby as a targeted import. If the trade name does reflect a trawl-fishery origin, as seems most likely, this is precisely the kind of fish that reaches collectors as unlabelled bycatch rather than through deliberate collection — a common route for Malawi's less charismatic deep and open-water haplochromines. Where kept, Rhamphochromis needs are demanding relative to typical Malawi cichlid husbandry: considerable tank length for a fast, active pursuit predator, cool-side Malawi temperatures, and careful stocking given the genus's well-documented aggression toward its own kind and its willingness to eat any tankmate small enough to swallow. No husbandry information specific to this form has been documented.
Conservation
Rhamphochromis sp. "Maldeco" has not been evaluated by the IUCN. As an undescribed form without a published scientific name it has no Red List category or assessment. As a South East Arm population it sits within a basin under sustained commercial fishing pressure — the same fishery its trade name is most plausibly tied to — alongside the broader stresses of warming, stratification and reduced deep mixing documented across Lake Malawi. Two of the genus's described species, R. esox and R. longiceps, are assessed Vulnerable, largely on fishing pressure, a relevant data point for the genus generally though not a formal status for this unnamed population.
