Taxonomy & naming
Tramitichromis variabilis belongs to Tramitichromis, a small genus of sand-dwelling Lake Malawi haplochromines closely related to Lethrinops and separated from it chiefly on details of jaw structure and breeding behaviour, including the sand-bower construction seen in several genus members. The genus name draws on the Latin trames or tramitis, "path" or "track," combined with chromis, an old term for perch-like fishes. Ad Konings (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2), reviewing the genus, characterises Tramitichromis by the peculiar shape of the lower pharyngeal bone: uniformly slender, long teeth with the front-most the longest — the reverse of most cichlids, where anterior pharyngeal teeth are short and forward-pointing — and a downward-projecting blade on the lower pharyngeal bone that, in this species specifically, angles more than 50° from horizontal, a steeper projection than in most other cichlids including its close relative Lethrinops. He counts four described species in the genus — T. brevis, T. variabilis, T. lituris and T. trilineatus — with a fifth or sixth still undescribed, and treats T. intermedius, which Eccles and Trewavas (1989) placed in Tramitichromis, as more likely a member of Trematocranus on the strength of its different colour pattern; this is Konings' own reassessment rather than settled consensus, noted here as a live point of genus-boundary disagreement rather than a resolved rename. The species epithet variabilis is Latin for "variable," a name typically applied to a species showing noticeable variation in colour or pattern between individuals, populations, or localities — a trait not unusual among Malawi's sand-dwelling cichlids, where subtle geographic variation is common. It is documented from Senga Bay on the lake's central-western shore; the describing authority and date are not confirmed in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Tramitichromis species carry the moderately elongate, laterally compressed body typical of sand-dwelling Malawi haplochromines, with a head and jaw suited to sifting substrate for food. Internally, T. variabilis is one of the two species (with T. lituris) that Konings (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2) used to define the genus's diagnostic pharyngeal jaw: long, slender teeth on the lower pharyngeal bone with the anterior teeth longest and their tips bent backward, and a downward-projecting blade on the underside of the bone that in this species angles more than 50° from horizontal — a steeper drop than in most cichlids, including the genus's close relative Lethrinops, where the blade's upper edge runs closer to horizontal (see Taxonomy & naming and Feeding). Consistent with an epithet meaning "variable," this species is expected to show some inconsistency in colour or pattern across individuals rather than a single fixed diagnostic marking, though the specific nature of that variation has not been documented here in enough detail to describe with confidence. As in most Malawi haplochromines, males are expected to develop brighter breeding colour than the plainer, cryptically marked females.
Habitat
This species is documented from Senga Bay, a well-known locality on Lake Malawi's central-western shore, popular both with fish collectors and with divers for its accessible rocky points and adjoining sandy bays. Tramitichromis species are sand-dwellers, foraging over open sandy floors near shore rather than living among rocks, typically in the shallower bays where the substrate is fine and clean. Water conditions at Senga Bay, as across the lake's main basin, are warm, clear, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
Tramitichromis variabilis is a sand-sifting invertivore, foraging over open sand for small buried invertebrates such as insect larvae and micro-crustaceans. Konings (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2), naming variabilis specifically as one of the species he examined, describes the mechanism: the lower gill rakers are short and robust, as in sand-sifting Lethrinops, with the first two rakers reduced to small knobs while the central three to five are wide and enlarged, their tips forming an almost horizontal platform at the bottom of the mouth. This platform works as a sieve — heavier sand grains sink between the rakers and are expelled through the gill openings, while lighter material, including invertebrates and algae, is retained. This feeding mode is shared broadly across the sand-dwelling haplochromine cichlids of the lake's open, unvegetated shallows. Mating
Tramitichromis is one of several Lake Malawi haplochromine genera in which males are known to build elaborate sand bowers — mounded structures built by repeatedly carrying mouthfuls of sand to a chosen site — used as a courtship display platform. Whether Tramitichromis variabilis itself constructs such a bower has not been specifically confirmed here, but the behaviour is characteristic enough of the genus and its close Lethrinops relatives to be a reasonable expectation. As in other Malawi haplochromines, no lasting pair bond forms; a female visits a displaying male's site, spawns briefly, and departs.
Breeding
Like all Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids, Tramitichromis variabilis is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, with the female collecting the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and carrying them, along with the resulting larvae, through an extended incubation without feeding, before releasing free-swimming fry that receive no further parental investment. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented for this species specifically and are not estimated here from related species.
In the aquarium
Tramitichromis variabilis has no significant documented aquarium history. A keeper attempting a species from this genus would reasonably provide a deep, fine sand substrate to support natural sifting and any bower-building behaviour, along with an open floor plan and only modest rockwork, plus water matching Lake Malawi's warm, hard, alkaline chemistry. A single male with several females is the usual approach for sand-dwelling Malawi haplochromines, since a lone pair risks excessive harassment of an unreceptive female, and a varied invertebrate-based diet suits the species' natural feeding mode. Given the scarcity of documented experience with this species, it should be regarded as a rarity rather than an established aquarium fish.
Conservation
Tramitichromis variabilis has not been evaluated by the IUCN and carries no Red List status here. Senga Bay is a developed and actively fished stretch of shoreline, so a local population there would be exposed to inshore disturbance, boat traffic, and both artisanal and ornamental collection pressure typical of such a site, though no species-specific assessment of these pressures exists for this fish.
