About the genus

Ameiurus is the genus of North American bullhead catfishes, part of the family Ictaluridae and native to the still and slow-flowing waters of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. These are stout, scaleless catfish with a barrel-shaped body, a rounded or slightly forked tail, an adipose fin, and eight sensory barbels ringing a wide mouth. Bullheads favor ponds, lakes, sluggish rivers, and weedy backwaters over swift current, and they are largely nocturnal, foraging along soft bottoms for insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and plant matter. The atlas covers 10 species in the genus.

The aquarium hobby's interest in Ameiurus is modest — these fish grow too large and too messy for most home tanks — but native-fish keepers and pond owners prize their toughness, and anglers across North America pursue the black bullhead (Ameiurus melas), yellow bullhead (A. natalis), and brown bullhead (A. nebulosus) as popular panfish. The white catfish (A. catus), snail bullhead (A. brunneus), flat bullhead (A. platycephalus), and spotted bullhead (A. serracanthus) round out the atlas's regional bullheads. The black bullhead in particular has been introduced well outside its native range and behaves as an invasive species in parts of Europe. Conservation status across the genus is reassuring: most evaluated species are Least Concern, with no widespread declines reported.
