Aquarist Atlas is a research-grade reference, written and compiled by hand from primary sources. It is free to read. These terms explain what is protected, what isn’t, and how the material may be reused.
What is protected
The original prose of every species, genus and water-body article, and the selection, structure and arrangement of the atlas as a whole, are the copyrighted work of Aquarist Atlas (© 2026). The maps, page designs and accompanying text are likewise protected. You may not copy, scrape, republish, redistribute, or use this material to train or fine-tune machine- learning models, in whole or in substantial part, without prior written permission.
What is not protected
Individual facts — a species’ valid name, size, distribution, conservation status, water chemistry and the like — are not owned by anyone. They are drawn from the public primary sources cited on each page (Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, GBIF, the IUCN Red List, and the scientific literature), and you are free to consult and use those facts from their original sources. What we ask is that you do not lift our wording or reproduce the compiled atlas wholesale.
Automated access & AI
Search-engine indexing is welcome, and so are AI assistants, agents, and crawlers — our robots.txt is open. If an AI tool answers a question using this site, we ask that it cite Aquarist Atlas and link the page. Automated access that places an unreasonable load on the site, or that is used to assemble a competing copy of the atlas, remains prohibited.
Citing or quoting
Short quotations for review, teaching, scholarship or commentary are fine with attribution to Aquarist Atlas and a link back. For anything more — reusing whole articles, mirroring the data, or any commercial use — please ask first.
No warranty
We work hard to keep every figure traceable to the cited research and to correct errors when we find them, but the atlas is provided “as is,” without warranty. It is an educational reference, not veterinary, husbandry or conservation advice for any particular situation.
