About the genus

Apricaphanius is a small genus of toothcarps native to the western Mediterranean fringe, split off in recent taxonomic work from the wider Aphanius group. The three species in the atlas are compact fish of 2 in, and between them they cover a narrow, disjunct range: two species in Spain's Iberian river and wetland systems, and a third, Apricaphanius saourensis, in the Saoura oasis system of Algeria. Unlike the annual killifish of tropical Africa and South America, these are non-annual, perennial-water species tied to spring-fed streams, coastal lagoons, and desert oases rather than seasonal pools.

This is a genus defined almost entirely by its conservation crisis rather than by aquarium popularity. Of the three species, one is assessed Critically Endangered and two Near Threatened, and all three are tracked by CARES conservation-breeding efforts - a strong signal that wild populations are under serious pressure from water extraction, wetland drainage, and the spread of introduced mosquitofish, which outcompetes and preys on native toothcarps across the Mediterranean basin. Any aquarium interest in Apricaphanius is really an extension of that conservation effort: keeping and breeding these fish in captivity as an insurance population rather than for casual fishkeeping.
