About the genus

Auchenipterus is the type genus of the driftwood catfish family Auchenipteridae, widespread across South America with atlas records from Brazil, Guyana, Argentina, Colombia, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, and Suriname. The 11 species covered here range from about 3.5–17 in and are more streamlined and laterally compressed than many catfish, an adaptation that lets several species swim actively in open water rather than hug the bottom like typical catfish. Auchenipterids as a family are also notable among catfishes for internal fertilization in a number of species, an unusual reproductive strategy for the group.

Auchenipterus nuchalis, known locally as barbudo, is a schooling, often commercially fished species across much of its Amazonian and Orinoco range, while Auchenipterus demerarae, the Demerara woodcat, and Auchenipterus nigripinnis, the Paraguay shark-cat, are known mainly from regional surveys rather than the aquarium trade. The genus is not a significant presence in the hobby. Conservation-wise the picture is reassuring: 9 of the 11 atlas species are rated Least Concern, with the remaining 2 Not Evaluated.
