Taxonomy & naming

Valenciennes described the species in 1842 from the Pebak River, Java, in Cuvier and Valenciennes's Histoire naturelle des poissons; it has since been moved into Luciosoma, so the authority is in parentheses. The family is Danionidae, which includes the danios and rasboras.

Morphology

A long, pike-like body with an upturned mouth set for surface prey, as the genus name suggests. FishBase gives a maximum of 10 in SL. Colour pattern is not described in the sources the atlas uses.

Habitat

FishBase lists the species as freshwater and pelagic in tropical water, found in river mainstreams and low-gradient tributaries with logs and leaf litter on the bottom, at the surface of flowing water. The range is the Malay Peninsula, Indochina and Indonesia.

Feeding

FishBase says it feeds mostly on fish.

Mating

Mating behaviour is not described in the sources the atlas uses.

Breeding

Breeding is not described in the sources the atlas uses.

In the aquarium

FishBase gives no aquarium notes. A predatory surface fish of this size needs a long tank with flow, floating cover, a tight lid and tankmates too large to swallow.

Conservation

FishBase lists the species as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed 31 January 2019.

Where it has been recorded

80 georeferenced records (GBIF). Each point is a field observation or museum specimen — pan and zoom to explore where this species turns up. The coordinates come straight from GBIF and are often rounded or tied to the nearest town or river landing, so a dot can sit just beside the actual water rather than in it.
