Opsaridium peringueyi was described in 1913 by the South African ichthyologists John Gilchrist and William Thompson. It belongs to the family Cyprinidae, within the genus Opsaridium — a group of elongated, silvery river cyprinids distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, most familiar to aquarists and fisheries biologists through Malawian species such as Opsaridium microlepis (mpasa) and Opsaridium microcephalum (sanjika). The genus name Opsaridium derives from Greek roots referring to a small fish (from opsarion, a diminutive term for fish or provisions of fish, used in older ichthyological Latin for small silvery river fishes). The species epithet peringueyi is a patronym honouring Louis Péringuey, the French-born South African entomologist and naturalist who served as director of the South African Museum in Cape Town in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and for whom several southern African species were named.
