Pterocapoeta maroccana was described by the British Museum ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1902 on the basis of material from Morocco. The species has since accumulated several junior synonyms reflecting its passage through multiple historical genus assignments: Barbus maroccanus is the original combination under Günther's usage, with Pterocapoeta maroccana and Varicorhinus maroccanus representing subsequent re-placements before the name settled in Labeobarbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now lists Pterocapoeta maroccana (Günther, 1902) as the accepted combination.
The genus Labeobarbus is a polyphyletic assemblage of large African barbs. Pterocapoeta maroccana is biogeographically isolated: along with the extinct Moroccan form Atlantor, it stands apart from the core Labeobarbus sensu stricto radiation of sub-Saharan Africa, representing a northern outlier of the genus on the Atlantic slope of northwest Africa. The parenthetical authority notation — (Günther, 1902) — signals that the species has been moved out of the genus in which Günther originally placed it.
This fish was long listed as Labeobarbus maroccanus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Pterocapoeta, and the current combination Pterocapoeta maroccana is followed here.
Morphology
Pterocapoeta maroccana is a large, robustly built cyprinid reaching a maximum recorded size of 15.7 in total length, placing it among the larger African barbs. As a benthopelagic species it has the body form typical of large river barbs: elongated and somewhat laterally compressed, suited to life in flowing water close to the substrate.
Specific morphological data for this species in the primary literature is sparse. As with related large Labeobarbus, the mouth is expected to be subterminal or inferior and adapted for scraping or picking food from the substrate, consistent with its detritivorous and algae-grazing habits. Detailed counts of fin rays, lateral-line scales, and pharyngeal teeth have not been captured in available sources.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Oum Er Rbia river basin in Morocco, one of the country's principal Atlantic-draining river systems. It occupies a freshwater, benthopelagic habitat within this basin and has not been recorded from other Moroccan river systems. FishBase places its latitudinal range between 27°N and 40°N, encompassing the extent of the Oum Er Rbia catchment on the Atlantic foothills and plains of Morocco.
Morocco's Atlantic-slope rivers are subject to a Mediterranean and semi-arid climate, with warm, low-flow summers and higher winter and spring discharges fed by Atlas Mountain snowmelt and rainfall. The Oum Er Rbia system historically supported a diverse endemic freshwater fauna, including freshwater mussels such as Unio foucauldianus and the critically threatened Margaritifera marocana, with which P. maroccana is documented to co-occur. Specific temperature and pH parameters for the species have not been formally published.
Feeding
Pterocapoeta maroccana is a benthopelagic omnivore. Although species-specific diet studies are not available in the published literature, its close relatives in the genus give a clear picture: large Labeobarbus typically feed on detritus, algae scraped or swept from hard surfaces, organic mud, plant material, and small invertebrates encountered on the substrate. The ecological role of P. maroccana in the Oum Er Rbia system likely follows this general pattern for large-bodied African river barbs.
Its role as a fish host for freshwater mussels — documented for the Oum Er Rbia system — means that larval mussels (glochidia) attach temporarily to its gills or fins for metamorphosis, a relationship that makes the barb an important component of the basin's invertebrate biodiversity as well as its own fish community.
Mating
Like all barbs, Pterocapoeta maroccana is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed beyond the act of spawning itself. In large river barbs and related mahseer-type cyprinids, breeding is typically tied to seasonal hydrological cycles — rising water levels, increased flow, and temperature shifts in late winter or spring trigger upstream movements and spawning aggregations over gravel or rocky substrates.
Courtship follows the standard barb pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female, the two press together, and eggs and milt are released simultaneously over the substrate. There is no nest construction and no territorial defence of a spawning site beyond transient courtship chasing. Eggs are broadcast over the riverbed and are immediately abandoned.
Breeding
Pterocapoeta maroccana is a seasonal broadcast spawner typical of large river cyprinids. Eggs are scattered over gravel or stony substrate during high-flow periods associated with Atlas Mountain snowmelt and spring rainfall, and no parental care is provided at any stage. Fertilised eggs are left to develop among the substrate interstices, exposed to ambient river conditions.
No captive-breeding records for this species are available in the hobbyist literature. As a large-bodied endemic with a restricted natural range, it is not present in the ornamental trade and has not been propagated in aquaria. The biology follows the pattern inferred from related large African Labeobarbus: high fecundity, seasonal spawning, and reliance on river hydrology for reproductive timing.

Pterocapoeta maroccana is not an aquarium fish. Its large adult size of up to 15.7 in, restricted endemic range, and absence from the ornamental trade mean it has no presence in the hobby. It is a wild river species of scientific and conservation interest rather than a candidate for the home aquarium.
For aquarists interested in large African barbs from comparable systems, the genus Labeobarbus contains a number of sub-Saharan species occasionally seen in specialist collections, though virtually none of the truly large species are regularly available. The conservation context of P. maroccana — an endemic of a single Moroccan river basin under growing anthropogenic pressure — makes collection for the trade an inadvisable prospect.

Pterocapoeta maroccana has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article, and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its documented range is restricted entirely to the Oum Er Rbia river basin in Morocco, making it one of the more narrowly endemic freshwater fishes of northwest Africa.
The Oum Er Rbia system faces significant anthropogenic pressures. The basin has been heavily dammed and water-extracted for irrigation, municipal supply, and hydropower — pressures that alter flow regimes, fragment fish populations, and degrade spawning habitat. The co-occurrence of P. maroccana with critically threatened freshwater mussels (Margaritifera marocana) in the same system signals a broader ecological vulnerability in this basin. Without formal assessment or targeted monitoring, the conservation status of this endemic barb remains uncertain, and its restricted range warrants precautionary attention.
