Taxonomy & naming

Rainboth and Kottelat described the species in 1987 from the Lam Dom Noi Reservoir, Ubon Province, Thailand, as Rasbora spilocerca. It was later moved to Rasbosoma, which is why the authority is in parentheses. FishBase gives dwarf scissortail rasbora as its common name.

Morphology

A very small, slim rasbora reaching 1 in SL according to FishBase. The species name refers to a spot on the tail, as spilocerca means spot-tail. Other colour detail is not described in the sources the atlas uses.

Habitat

FishBase reports it near the surface in shallow marshes, swamps and inundated fields, usually in open water above beds of fine-leaved aquatic plants and submerged grasses, in clear swamps. It is listed as freshwater and benthopelagic, in tropical water, from the Mekong basin.

Feeding

It feeds on zooplankton and some insects, according to FishBase.

Mating

Mating behaviour is not described in the sources the atlas uses.

Breeding

Breeding is not described in the sources the atlas uses.

In the aquarium

FishBase says it is too small to be marketed and is rarely seen in the aquarium trade. A tank for this size should be planted and calm, with other small, peaceful fish and food small enough for its mouth.

Conservation

FishBase lists the species as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed 15 March 2011.

Where it has been recorded

20 georeferenced records (GBIF). Each point is a field observation or museum specimen — pan and zoom to explore where this species turns up. The coordinates come straight from GBIF and are often rounded or tied to the nearest town or river landing, so a dot can sit just beside the actual water rather than in it.
