Taxonomy & naming
Schizopygopsis yalongensis was described in 2026 by Kai Zhao, Shuang Liu, Shan Chen and Fei Tian, published in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution (v. 102, no. 1: 131–144). It belongs to the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Schizopygopsinae — part of the schizothoracine radiation, the "snowtrout" or "naked carps" endemic to the high-elevation drainages of the Tibetan Plateau and its margins. The genus Schizopygopsis itself was established by Franz Steindachner in 1866, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Schizopygopsis yalongensis as the valid, currently accepted name. No other Schizopygopsis species is yet present in this atlas's barbs coverage, so the species is filed under the general "Asian barbs" group used for East Asian cyprinids pending fuller coverage of the schizothoracines.
The type series — a holotype (NPIB 2307001) and 40 paratypes (NPIB 2307002–7041) — was collected from the Yalong River near Zhenqin Village, Chenduo County, Qinghai Province, at approximately 97.60°E, 33.38°N and an elevation of 4,564 ft. Beyond the type locality, holotype/paratype numbers and formal taxonomic record, the full text of the original description — including the diagnostic characters used to separate S. yalongensis from its roughly 30 congeners — was not accessible for this article, so those specifics are not reported here.
Morphology
The full description of Schizopygopsis yalongensis, including its measurements, meristic counts and any figured diagnostic characters, was not accessible in the material available for this article. Like other Schizopygopsis, it can be expected to show the schizothoracine body plan: scales reduced to a narrow row along the lateral line and a patch around the anal and pelvic region, with the rest of the body naked or nearly so, plus a horny sheath on the lower jaw used for scraping algae from rock surfaces — genus-level generalities, not specific observations of this species. No maximum size is available.
Habitat
Schizopygopsis yalongensis is known from the upper Yalong River drainage in Qinghai Province, on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of western China, with its type locality near Zhenqin Village, Chenduo County, at an elevation of roughly 4,564 ft — among the highest-altitude type localities recorded for any cyprinid. Schizothoracine fish as a group are specialists of cold, fast, oxygen-rich, high-elevation rivers and lakes, typically at or above 3,000–4,0 ft, conditions radically different from the warm lowland streams most barbs occupy. No water-chemistry data specific to this species were accessible for this article, but a near-freezing to cool water regime for much of the year is consistent with its extreme-altitude type locality — a genus- and locality-level inference, not a direct measurement.
Feeding
No feeding observations are available for Schizopygopsis yalongensis specifically. Schizothoracine fish generally graze algae and periphyton from rock surfaces using the horny jaw sheath characteristic of the group, supplemented by benthic invertebrates — a genus-level generality rather than a documented study of this species.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been recorded for Schizopygopsis yalongensis, and no sexual dimorphism has been described. Schizothoracine fish of the high Tibetan Plateau are typically slow-growing and late-maturing, adaptations to a short, cold growing season, but this is a family-level generality, not species-specific data.
Breeding
Breeding is undocumented for Schizopygopsis yalongensis and has never been achieved in captivity. High-altitude schizothoracine fish are essentially absent from the aquarium hobby, and their cold, fast-flowing native habitat would be extremely difficult to replicate outside a dedicated cold-water system.
In the aquarium
Schizopygopsis yalongensis is not present in the aquarium trade and has no history of captive husbandry. As a Tibetan Plateau snowtrout adapted to cold, fast-flowing, high-oxygen water at extreme elevation, it is not a candidate for a conventional tropical or even standard cold-water aquarium; any prospective keeping would require dedicated cold, well-oxygenated, flowing-water conditions that few hobbyists could sustain. These are genus- and family-level inferences, not documented care information for this species.
Conservation
Schizopygopsis yalongensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated, as expected for a species described in 2026. It is currently known only from the upper Yalong River drainage in Qinghai Province.
Schizothoracine fish across the Tibetan Plateau face well-documented pressure from hydropower damming, overfishing — many species are a traditional food source in the region — and habitat disruption, and numerous congeners carry threatened IUCN assessments; whether these pressures reach S. yalongensis's specific high-elevation range has not been assessed for this species.
