Sinocyclocheilus pingchowensis is a 2026-described golden-line barb from a tributary of the Niu-He system in the Hongshui-He basin of southern Guizhou Province, China. It belongs to Sinocyclocheilus, the world's most diverse cavefish radiation — around 80 species, most of them blind and scaleless from a life spent in karst caves — but S. pingchowensis is only the second known member of the genus to retain fully developed scales and normal eyes while living in open, surface-flowing (epigean) water. Sister to the similarly unusual S. macrolepis, its discovery adds a second documented case within the genus of a lineage apparently reversing the cave-adapted traits typical of its relatives. It has no history in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinocyclocheilus pingchowensis was described in 2026 by Zhi-Xuan Zeng and Jia-Jun Zhou, as part of a larger authorship (Zeng, Cai, Zhou, Chen & Shao, 2026) published in the Journal of Fish Biology. It belongs to the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Cyprininae, within the genus Sinocyclocheilus — the golden-line barbs, a radiation of roughly 80 species endemic to the karst limestone landscape of southern China and famous as the world's most diverse cavefish group, typically showing troglomorphic traits such as scale loss and eye degeneration. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Sinocyclocheilus pingchowensis as the valid, currently accepted name. No other Sinocyclocheilus species is yet present in this atlas's barbs coverage, so the species is filed under the general "Asian barbs" group used for East Asian cyprinids pending fuller coverage of the genus.

The type series — holotype PRFRI 202401160004 plus multiple paratype lots — was collected from the outlet of a small subterranean tributary of the Niu-He system, part of the Hongshui-He basin, in Pingtang County, Qiannan Prefecture, Guizhou Province, at roughly 25°47'19"N, 107°25'47"E and 2746 ft elevation. Despite a type locality tied to a cave-stream outlet, the fish itself is not cave-adapted: per the published abstract, mitochondrial cytochrome b and ND4 sequencing placed these specimens as a distinct species, sister to Sinocyclocheilus macrolepis and closely related to S. ronganensis, and — like S. macrolepis — it retains fully developed scales and normal eyes while inhabiting open, surface-flowing (epigean) streams, a rare exception among its overwhelmingly cave-adapted, blind and scaleless relatives. The describing team group S. pingchowensis with S. macrolepis and S. ronganensis as the "S. macrolepis group", and their phylogenetic analysis suggests the retained scales in this pair represent an evolutionary reversal from cave-adapted degeneration, coinciding with a re-colonization of surface water — a hypothesis raised in the paper rather than a settled conclusion. Morphology

Full morphometric and meristic data for Sinocyclocheilus pingchowensis were not accessible in the material available for this article. In the aquarium

Sinocyclocheilus pingchowensis has no history in the aquarium trade. It is known only from a 2026 scientific description based on wild-collected specimens from a karst stream system in Guizhou Province. Because it is one of the few sighted, scaled members of an otherwise cave-adapted genus, any future interest would most likely come from specialist keepers of Sinocyclocheilus rather than the general hobby, but no husbandry information exists for this species.

Conservation

Sinocyclocheilus pingchowensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated, as expected for a species described in 2026. It is currently known only from its type locality in the Niu-He drainage of the Hongshui-He basin, Guizhou Province.

Sinocyclocheilus as a genus is heavily represented on the IUCN Red List, with many narrow-range karst species assessed as Threatened due to groundwater pollution, quarrying and habitat disturbance in China's karst regions; whether these pressures reach S. pingchowensis's specific range has not been assessed for this species.
