Barbucca is a small genus of loaches from Southeast Asian streams, distinctive enough within the loach group that it is often placed in its own small family - the atlas records it from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Atlas species are tiny, at 1–1.5 in, with a squat, big-eyed, sand-coloured body built for a life spent low over fine substrate, darting in short bursts rather than swimming continuously.
The scooter loach (B. diabolica) is the species aquarists know, named for its quick, darting movements across the tank floor; it is kept by specialist nano and community-tank hobbyists who provide fine, soft sand for it to forage through and sift for small food particles, mimicking its natural riverbed habitat. B. elongata, the elongate scooter loach, is far less often seen in the trade. Conservation status is only partly assessed, with one atlas species Least Concern and the other Not Evaluated.
