Bhavania is a small genus of hillstream loaches endemic to India, with its two known species occupying fast-flowing hill streams at opposite ends of the country - Bhavania australis in the Western Ghats of southern India, and Bhavania arunachalensis in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. Like other hillstream loaches, Bhavania species have a flattened body and broadened, sucker-like paired fins that let them grip smooth rock in swift, well-oxygenated currents rather than being swept downstream. Both atlas species are compact, reaching around 2.5 in.
This genus sits mostly outside the mainstream aquarium trade - specialist hillstream-loach keepers occasionally seek out Bhavania australis, the "southern torrent loach," for biotope tanks that replicate fast-flowing, high-oxygen streams, but sightings in the trade are sporadic rather than routine, and arunachalensis is essentially unknown outside taxonomic surveys. Data on both species stay sparse: one is Data Deficient and the other Not Evaluated, which tracks with how little targeted fieldwork has reached these narrow, fast-water hill-stream habitats compared with the more heavily surveyed lowland rivers of India.
