Campylomormyrus compressirostris is a small, short-snouted mormyrid from the Congo River — a member of the Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. Like every member of its exclusively African family it is weakly electric, carrying an electric organ in the tail that fires a biphasic, pulse-type discharge used to electrolocate prey and read the dark, sediment-laden water of the lower Congo rather than relying on sight. At a modest maximum of around 19 cm total length it avoids the size trap that dogs many bonytongues, but it is a genuinely obscure fish outside the laboratory: it has drawn real scientific attention as a genome-sequenced species used to study electric-signal diversification within its roughly 15-species Congo Basin genus, and researchers have even produced fertile hybrid offspring with its close relative C. tamandua — yet it remains almost unheard of in the aquarium trade and essentially unbred outside controlled research settings.

Taxonomy & naming

Campylomormyrus compressirostris was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1924. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a scattered, deep-time radiation of fishes found today on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and united not by shared modern habitat but by that toothed lingual bone. The Mormyridae are an exclusively African family of several hundred weakly electric species, entirely convergent with — not related to — the electric knifefishes of South America (Gymnotiformes); the two groups evolved similar electric senses independently on opposite sides of the Atlantic. The parenthetical authority indicates the species was originally placed in a different genus before later taxonomic work moved it into Campylomormyrus.

The genus name Campylomormyrus combines Greek kampylos, "curved" or "bent", with the older mormyrid genus name Mormyrus, a reference to the elongated, often downcurved snout that characterises several species in the genus. This particular species runs in the opposite direction: the epithet compressirostris joins Latin compressus, "compressed" or "flattened", with rostrum, "snout" or "beak" — a "compressed-snout" mormyrid, matching FishBase's description of a short snout and a less-developed mental (chin) lobe compared with the more heavily trunked congeners the genus name evokes.

Campylomormyrus has become something of a model genus in electric-fish research: genomic work treats it as a case study in adaptive radiation and ecological speciation, with roughly 15 described species endemic to the Congo Basin distinguished largely by differences in electric organ discharge (EOD) waveform rather than by obvious external anatomy — so identification by eye alone should be treated with caution. One genomic study went further and documented fertile F1 hybrids between C. compressirostris and its congener C. tamandua, a notable finding among mormyrids that points to close evolutionary kinship within the genus even where EOD signals diverge.

Morphology

Campylomormyrus compressirostris reaches a reported maximum of about 7.5 in total length (FishBase) — a modest size by mormyrid standards and well within reach of a home aquarium, unlike some of its larger congeners. The body is elongated with a fine, slender caudal peduncle, and, true to its name, the snout is short and compressed rather than drawn out into a long tube, with a less developed mental lobe than seen in more heavily "trunked" relatives. FishBase records 30 dorsal soft rays and 36 anal soft rays, fin counts consistent with the rear-set, mirrored dorsal and anal fins typical across the family.

As in every mormyrid, a specialised electric organ near the base of the tail generates a weak electric organ discharge (EOD); genomic research on this species specifically describes it as biphasic and pulse-type, used for electrolocation in the dark, sediment-laden water of the lower Congo and, presumably, for communication with conspecifics. Because EOD waveform is highly species-specific within Campylomormyrus, it functions almost like an acoustic signature distinguishing otherwise similar-looking congeners. Mormyrids as a group carry an enlarged cerebellum and among the highest brain-to-body ratios of any fish — the physiological cost of running a constantly active electrosensory system, and the source of their reputation as unusually "thinking" fish.

Habitat

Campylomormyrus compressirostris is known from the Congo River basin, with FishBase records centred on the lower Congo and Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool) — the wide, slow-flowing stretch of river that gives way downstream to the Lower Congo Rapids, a famously turbulent, hydrologically extreme reach spanning the border between Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo), and one of the most fish-endemism-rich stretches of freshwater on Earth. It is a demersal, bottom-oriented fish, a lifestyle shared across the family, foraging along the substrate rather than in open water.

Detailed water chemistry has not been documented for this species specifically in the available sources. As with the wider Congo Basin, the general expectation is warm, tannin-stained or turbid tropical freshwater on the soft, slightly acidic-to-neutral side — the kind of low-visibility environment in which an electric sense outperforms eyesight — but that should be read as general regional guidance rather than a measured figure for this fish.

Feeding

Campylomormyrus compressirostris is a carnivorous, bottom-oriented predator. In the aquarium it takes live small invertebrates readily — chironomid (bloodworm) larvae and tubifex worms are specifically reported — while dry prepared foods are often rejected outright, making it a fussier feeder than some better-known mormyrids.

Detailed wild foraging behaviour has not been documented for this species specifically, but as in other mormyrids it almost certainly hunts after dark along the bottom, using electrolocation from the tail's electric organ to locate invertebrates buried in sediment rather than searching by sight — general family biology extended cautiously to a poorly studied relative rather than a directly observed account.

Mating

Courtship and species or sex recognition in mormyrids runs substantially through the electric organ discharge rather than through visual display, with the pulse waveform thought to carry information about species identity, sex and reproductive readiness. Beyond that general pattern, courtship behaviour has not been specifically documented for Campylomormyrus compressirostris, and wild reproductive ecology for the species is genuinely sparse in the literature.

One striking data point does exist: a genomic study recorded fertile F1 hybrid offspring between C. compressirostris and its congener C. tamandua produced under research conditions — a rare outcome among mormyrids, where EOD-based mate recognition is thought to normally act as a barrier between species. That finding says more about the close genetic relationship within the genus than about wild courtship behaviour, and should not be read as evidence of natural hybridisation in the river.

Breeding

As with mormyrids generally, Campylomormyrus compressirostris is essentially not bred in the aquarium hobby, and wild spawning is presumed to be seasonal and flood-triggered like other family members, though the details — nest site, egg-laying behaviour, any parental care — have not been reliably documented for this species.

The one documented exception is scientific rather than hobbyist: researchers at the University of Potsdam, Germany, have artificially bred this species in controlled laboratory settings as part of genomic and electric-signalling research, and the same body of work produced the fertile C. tamandua × C. compressirostris hybrids noted above. That is a genuine captive-breeding achievement, but it reflects a research programme working under laboratory conditions, not natural aquarium spawning — the species remains essentially unbred in home aquaria, and any hobbyist claim of captive spawning should be treated with real scepticism absent solid documentation.

In the aquarium

Campylomormyrus compressirostris is not an established aquarium fish; the available husbandry information comes from a small number of specialist care write-ups rather than mainstream retail experience. Reports describe it as strongly territorial and aggressive toward its own kind, with solitary housing recommended rather than the small groups sometimes possible with other mormyrids. As a carnivorous predator it needs live or frozen invertebrates such as chironomid larvae and tubifex, since dry food is often refused; reported captive lifespan is 8–12 years, and it is said to do well alongside quiet, medium-to-large, non-aggressive tankmates.

At roughly 7.5 in maximum this is a manageable size that avoids the size-trap territory of the giant bonytongues, but the general precautions that apply to mormyrids as a family are still the safest guide: soft substrate rather than sharp gravel, dim lighting and ample cover, excellent and stable water quality, and real caution with medications — mormyrids are broadly reported as sensitive to many aquarium treatments and to copper-based products in particular. Given how rarely this species is seen in the trade and how thin the documented husbandry record is, it is best regarded as a specialist prospect rather than a fish for the general hobby.

Conservation

Campylomormyrus compressirostris has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. FishBase records a low fishing-vulnerability score (10 out of 100), which points to limited susceptibility to overfishing pressure specifically, but that metric is not a substitute for a formal conservation assessment and should not be read as a clean bill of health.

As a narrow-range lower Congo and Pool Malebo endemic, the species' long-term outlook is tied to broader Congo Basin pressures — sedimentation, water-quality decline, hydropower development and habitat change along the lower river — rather than to any documented species-specific decline. The absence of an assessment reflects a genuine data gap, not a demonstrated absence of risk.
