Taxonomy & naming
Campylomormyrus luapulaensis was described by the ichthyologists Léon David and Max Poll in 1937, from the type locality of Kabunda. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the most ancient living branches of the ray-finned fishes. The order's name refers to a bony, toothed structure on the floor of the mouth (the "bonytongue") that grips and grinds prey against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth, a feature shared across its scattered, deep-time radiation on four continents.
The genus Campylomormyrus — the long-nosed or trunk mormyrids — comprises roughly twenty species found across Central and West Africa, most of them separated less by outward appearance than by the waveform of their electric organ discharge (EOD), since many species look nearly identical to the eye. The species epithet luapulaensis refers to the Luapula River, part of the fish's known range; the vernacular name "Kabunda elephantfish" derives from the type locality itself. FishBase and the IUCN Red List both carry the species under this name, with a conservation status of Data Deficient.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Campylomormyrus luapulaensis has an elongate, laterally compressed body and the diagnostic Campylomormyrus feature: a small, tubular mouth set at the tip of a fleshy, downward-curving trunk-like snout (the genus name itself, from Greek kampylos, "curved", combines with the old fish-name mormyrus to describe exactly this). FishBase records a maximum length of 8.7 in total length, making it a modest-sized mormyrid rather than one of the larger elephantnoses. Detailed colour and fin-count data for this specific species are sparse in the available literature; like related Campylomormyrus it is presumed to carry the muted grey-brown to blackish colouring typical of the genus.
As in all mormyrids, a weak electric organ sits in the slender caudal peduncle near the tail, generating a continuous, low-voltage pulse-type discharge (EOD) that the fish uses to electrolocate objects, obstacles and prey in dark or turbid water, and to signal to other mormyrids — a sensory system that operates independently of, and is not to be confused with, the very different jamming-avoidance electric knifefishes of South America. Mormyrids as a family are noted for an unusually large, elaborately folded cerebellum relative to body size, among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, thought to support the heavy real-time processing this electrosensory system demands; the trunk-like snout itself is densely packed with electroreceptors used to probe soft substrate for hidden prey.
Habitat
Campylomormyrus luapulaensis is known from the Luapula River — the river linking Lake Bangweulu to Lake Mweru along the Democratic Republic of the Congo–Zambia border, part of the upper Congo basin — and from the Luembe River, a tributary of the Kasai in Angola, part of the middle Congo basin. The type locality, Kabunda, sits within this general range. FishBase lists it as demersal and restricted to fresh water.
Specific water-chemistry readings for this species are not documented in the available sources, but Congo basin rivers of this kind are typically warm, tropical, often turbid or tannin-stained, and slow-flowing through floodplain channels and backwaters — precisely the dim, sediment-laden conditions in which a weakly electric sense is most useful for finding food and avoiding obstacles. Given how narrow its documented range is, this may be a genuine single- or double-river endemic; data on its broader distribution and abundance remain sparse.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study of Campylomormyrus luapulaensis appears to exist. Like other mormyrids, it is presumed to be a nocturnal, benthic invertivore, using its electroreceptor-rich, downturned snout to probe soft substrate for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates hidden in silt and detritus, feeding mostly after dark when its electric sense has the advantage over vision.
In the rare cases where mormyrids of this kind are kept, aquarium guidance for the group calls for live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm and brine shrimp in particular — offered after the lights go out, since these fish are reluctant to compete for food in bright conditions or against faster diurnal tankmates.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been documented for Campylomormyrus luapulaensis specifically. Across the mormyrids as a family, breeding is understood to be seasonal and often triggered by rainy-season floods, when rising, more oxygenated water and expanded floodplain habitat create conditions favourable for spawning. The species-specific pulse pattern of the electric organ discharge is thought to play a role in courtship and mate or species recognition, letting mormyrids identify appropriate partners among the many similar-looking species that can share a river system, but the fine details of pairing, courtship display and spawning site choice remain barely known for the genus and are undescribed for this species.
Breeding
Campylomormyrus luapulaensis has essentially never been bred in captivity, and its wild breeding biology is poorly known even at the level of the broader genus. Mormyrids in general are difficult, seasonal, flood-cued spawners whose reproduction has resisted reliable replication in aquarium conditions; a few mormyrid species are thought to guard eggs laid among vegetation, but this has not been confirmed for Campylomormyrus luapulaensis. Campylomormyrus luapulaensis is not established in the aquarium trade and is rarely, if ever, offered for sale; anyone who does encounter it should expect a delicate, poorly understood fish rather than a routine community addition. General guidance for mormyrids of this kind calls for stable, clean, well-filtered water with minimal turbidity, a dimly lit tank furnished with driftwood, roots and other cover to shelter in during the day, and a soft substrate that will not abrade the sensitive, electroreceptor-covered snout used for foraging. A tank of at least 59.1 in is recommended as a minimum for adult-sized mormyrids of this size class.
Mormyrids as a group are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many common medications, and are best treated conservatively and only when necessary. They can also be aggressive toward their own kind, particularly in cramped quarters, so keepers attempting a group should provide generous space and plenty of visual breaks; a single specimen in a peaceful, similarly dim-loving community is the more commonly recommended approach for elephantnoses generally. Given how little is documented about Campylomormyrus luapulaensis specifically, husbandry should default to the cautious, well-established standards for the wider mormyrid family.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Campylomormyrus luapulaensis as Data Deficient, meaning there is not enough information on its distribution, population size or trend to assign a threat category. This reflects how little survey work has reached the rivers it is known from rather than any specific evidence that the species is currently secure.
Its documented range — the Luapula River on the DRC–Zambia border and the Luembe, a Kasai tributary in Angola — is narrow enough that habitat pressures common across the wider Congo basin, such as siltation, deforestation, damming and small-scale mining, could plausibly affect it, but no species-specific threat assessment exists to confirm this. As with many Data Deficient Congo basin fishes, the honest conservation summary is that more fieldwork is needed before its status can be properly judged.
