Campylomormyrus orycteropus is a little-known weakly electric mormyrid from the Lake Mweru system and upper Congo River of the Democratic Republic of the Congo — a member of the Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. Like every mormyrid it carries an electric organ in the tail that fires a species-specific, pulse-type discharge, used to electrolocate prey and read the world in dark, sediment-laden water rather than by sight — and its own species name commemorates an elongated, downturned snout said to recall the digging snout of the aardvark. Reaching a modest 32 cm total length, it is assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient: essentially unstudied in life history, unrecorded in captive breeding, and effectively unknown in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Campylomormyrus orycteropus was described in 1982 by the ichthyologists Max Poll, Jean-Pierre Gosse and Jean-Jacques Orts, with a type locality at Pweto, on the Congolese shore of Lake Mweru in the far south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — one of the oldest living branches of the teleost fishes, a scattered, deep-time radiation found today across four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and united not by shared modern habitat but by that toothed lingual bone. The Mormyridae are an exclusively African family of several hundred weakly electric species; despite a superficial resemblance, they are entirely unrelated to the electric knifefishes of South America (Gymnotiformes) — the two lineages evolved similar electric senses independently, on opposite sides of the Atlantic, and should never be conflated.

The genus name Campylomormyrus combines Greek kampylos, "curved" or "bent", with the older mormyrid genus name Mormyrus, referring to the elongated, often downcurved snout that characterises many species in the genus. The species epithet orycteropus is drawn directly from Orycteropus, the genus name of the aardvark (Orycteropus afer) — itself Greek for "digging foot" — and describes a long, tapering, downturned snout likened to the aardvark's own probing muzzle. As with several other long-snouted Campylomormyrus that Poll and colleagues named after mammals with prominent noses or trunks, the comparison is a naming convention rather than a close anatomical match; the resemblance is one of function (a probing organ used to search soft substrate) rather than form.

Campylomormyrus has become something of a model genus in electric-fish research: many of its species are visually similar to one another and to species in related genera, and are reliably distinguished only by their species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD) waveform. As with other mormyrids, any identification of C. orycteropus based on appearance alone should be treated with appropriate caution.

Morphology

Campylomormyrus orycteropus reaches a reported maximum of about 12.6 in total length, a middling size within its genus — smaller than large-snouted relatives such as C. elephas but well beyond the pocket-sized elephantnoses more familiar to the aquarium trade. Like other Campylomormyrus its snout is drawn out into an elongated, downcurved extension of the jaws, echoed directly in the species name's comparison to the aardvark's digging muzzle; this is a bony and cartilaginous structure rather than the soft, fleshy chin appendage (the Schnauzenorgan) seen in the unrelated genus Gnathonemus, though it serves a broadly similar function in probing soft substrate for buried prey.

As in every mormyrid, a specialised electric organ near the base of the tail generates a weak, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and communication. Because that discharge is species-specific, it functions almost like an acoustic signature, and mormyrids as a group carry an outsized cerebellum and among the highest brain-to-body ratios of any fish — the physiological cost of running a constantly active electrosensory system. Detailed external colouration and finer morphological description for C. orycteropus are sparse in the available literature; the species is defined largely by its type description and FishBase's summary figures rather than by a well-illustrated field account, and FishBase places it at trophic level 3.2, consistent with a fish that hunts small invertebrates rather than sifting detritus or algae.

Habitat

Campylomormyrus orycteropus is known from a narrow slice of the eastern Congo basin: the type locality at Pweto on Lake Mweru, the DRC-Zambia border lake at the southern edge of the basin, and a second area around the Wagenia Falls on the Congo River near Kisangani, hundreds of kilometres to the north. That combination — a rift-adjacent lake and a set of cataracts on the main river channel — points to a species associated with the mixed lake, river-mouth and rapids habitats typical of the upper Congo system, though the gap between the two known localities also means its full range within the basin is poorly resolved.

FishBase records the species as a freshwater, demersal, tropical fish with no detailed water-chemistry figures on file. No species-specific pH or temperature data have been published; the safest working assumption, extended cautiously from Congo basin mormyrids generally, is warm water in the mid-to-upper 20s (°C), typically soft and only mildly acidic to neutral rather than the strongly acidic blackwater found in some Congo tributaries, but this has not been confirmed for C. orycteropus itself and should be read as inference rather than documented fact.

Feeding

Detailed wild diet has not been specifically documented for Campylomormyrus orycteropus, but FishBase's trophic level estimate of 3.2 places it among small-organism feeders — consistent with a diet of aquatic invertebrates rather than plant matter or larger prey. Like other mormyrids it almost certainly forages along the bottom, using its elongated, downcurved snout together with active electrolocation from the tail's electric organ to locate small invertebrates buried in sediment, rather than hunting by sight.

General elephantnose and mormyrid husbandry accounts describe the group as insectivorous, taking mosquito larvae, bloodworm and tubifex-type prey, foraging mostly after dark. That pattern is a reasonable guide for this species but should be read as inference from the wider family rather than an observation specific to C. orycteropus.

Mating

Courtship and species or sex recognition in mormyrids runs substantially through the electric organ discharge rather than through visual display, and the pulse waveform is thought to carry information about species identity, sex and reproductive readiness. Beyond that general pattern, essentially nothing specific has been documented about courtship behaviour in Campylomormyrus orycteropus. Mormyrids as a group are thought to be seasonal, flood-triggered spawners, with reproductive activity tied to the rains and rising water of the African wet season, but the details — courtship sequence, spawning site, any pair-bonding — have not been described for this species.

Data on this fish's reproductive ecology are genuinely sparse; what is stated here reflects general mormyrid biology extended cautiously to a poorly studied relative, not observations specific to C. orycteropus.

Breeding

Mormyrids as a group are essentially not bred in aquaria and remain poorly understood in captivity, and Campylomormyrus orycteropus is no exception — there is no documented record of it being spawned in captivity. Wild spawning is presumed to be seasonal and flood-triggered, and the species-specific EOD likely plays some courtship or mate-recognition role, but nest site, egg-laying behaviour and any parental care have not been reliably documented for this species. Some mormyrids are thought to guard eggs among vegetation, but this has not been confirmed here.

Given how rarely this fish is even recorded in surveys, let alone the trade, any claim of captive breeding for C. orycteropus should be treated with strong scepticism absent solid documentation.

In the aquarium

Campylomormyrus orycteropus is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear to be part of the regular ornamental trade, and no husbandry account specific to this species is available. The general principles that apply to elephantnoses and mormyrids as a family are the safest guide should a specimen ever be encountered: dim lighting, soft sand for probing, stable water quality, and plenty of cover such as roots or pipes to retreat into during the day, since the group is naturally most active after dark. Mormyrids are typically intolerant of being kept alone and can show aggression toward their own kind, so a suitably sized group (or a careful single specimen with unrelated, robust tankmates) is the usual recommendation.

Mormyrids are also notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many aquarium medications, particularly copper-based treatments, so any dosing should be conservative and any new fish should be settled gently rather than roughly netted or exposed to bright light. Given the near-total absence of documented captive care, this species' narrow known range, and its Data Deficient status, C. orycteropus is best regarded as effectively outside the hobby — a fish for specialist research collections rather than a realistic aquarium prospect.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Campylomormyrus orycteropus as Data Deficient, an assessment dated 16 February 2009. Data Deficient means the available information is inadequate to judge extinction risk one way or the other — it is not a claim that the species is safe, nor that it is threatened, only that too little is known to say.

That gap in knowledge is consistent with a species known from just two localities across a large basin, a pattern that could reflect either genuine rarity and a restricted range, or simply a lack of targeted survey effort in a poorly explored corner of the Congo system. As with many Congo basin fishes, the main long-term pressures are generic rather than species-specific — habitat degradation, sedimentation and water-quality decline across the river system — rather than any documented decline specific to this species. Until further survey work narrows that uncertainty, the Data Deficient rating should be read as an honest acknowledgement of how little is known, not as reassurance.
