Taxonomy & naming
Campylomormyrus phantasticus was described by the French ichthyologist Paul Pellegrin in 1927. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantfishes, a purely African, entirely freshwater family within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues. Bonytongues are among the most ancient living lineages of bony fish, a deep-time radiation scattered today across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia; the mormyrids are the African branch, and though some distantly related Old-World knifefishes (Notopteridae) share the order, Mormyridae itself has no close resemblance to the unrelated New-World electric knifefishes of Gymnotiformes — the similarity between weakly electric mormyrids and gymnotiforms is a case of convergent evolution, not shared ancestry.
The genus name Campylomormyrus is built from the Greek kampylos, "bent" or "curved", and mormyros, an old Greek fish name that gives the family Mormyridae its name — together, "bent mormyrid", a reference to the characteristically curved, elongated snout carried by many species in the genus. The species epithet phantasticus derives from Greek phantastikos, "able to be seen" or "fanciful/imaginary", the root of the English word "fantastic" — a fitting label for a fish whose snout shape looks almost too elaborate to be functional. Species-level identification within Campylomormyrus is notoriously difficult from appearance alone, since several congeners share a broadly similar body plan; researchers increasingly rely on the waveform of each species' electric organ discharge (EOD) to confirm identity, so any visual identification of C. phantasticus should be treated with appropriate caution.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Campylomormyrus phantasticus carries an elongated, downward-curving snout — an extension of the head rather than a barbel — that is densely packed with electroreceptors and used to probe soft river-bottom sediment for hidden invertebrates. The mouth sits at or near the tip of this snout. The body is compressed and elongate in typical mormyrid fashion, with a slender caudal peduncle housing the electric organ that generates the fish's weak electric field.
FishBase lists a maximum total length of about 14.6 in for this species, making it a mid-sized member of the genus. As in other Mormyridae, mormyrids are noted for having among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish group, with an enlarged cerebellum thought to be linked to processing the constant stream of information from their electric sense — though this has not been specifically studied in C. phantasticus itself. Campylomormyrus phantasticus is known from the Sanaga River basin of Cameroon, with its type locality given as the Sanaga River at Nanga Eboko. FishBase classifies it as a demersal, tropical freshwater species, consistent with the bottom-oriented, sediment-probing habits typical of its genus.
As with most mormyrids, it is presumed to inhabit slow-flowing, sediment-rich stretches of river and floodplain — the turbid, often tannin-stained water in which an electric sense provides a real advantage over vision. It is reasonable to expect C. phantasticus to have broadly similar requirements, but this is inferred rather than confirmed for the species itself, and prospective keepers should treat any specific figures as a starting point, not a guarantee.
Mormyrids as a group are sensitive fish: they do poorly in anything but clean, stable, well-filtered water, they are notably sensitive to many medications (dose conservatively and avoid copper-based treatments), and they can be aggressive toward their own kind in confined spaces even while remaining generally peaceful toward other fish. Dim lighting, soft substrate to probe, and cover such as driftwood or root tangles suit their nocturnal, sediment-foraging habits. This is not a beginner fish, and given how little is documented about C. phantasticus specifically, it should only be attempted by keepers prepared to work largely from first principles and from the wider mormyrid literature rather than from a well-trodden care sheet.
