Taxonomy & naming
Genyomyrus donnyi was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, one of roughly seventy mormyrid species he named over his prolific career at the British Museum. It is the only species placed in the genus Genyomyrus — a monotypic genus — within the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids of Africa's rivers. Mormyridae in turn sits within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes, one of the most ancient living lineages of teleosts still swimming today; the order's name refers to the toothed basihyal bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against toothed plates on the roof, a structure found across this scattered, deep-time radiation on four continents.
The genus name Genyomyrus combines a Greek root for jaw or chin (geny-) with -myrus, a suffix shared with several other mormyrid genera (Mormyrus itself, Hippopotamyrus, Pollimyrus, Boulengeromyrus) that echoes the family name — fittingly, since an elongated jaw is the feature that most distinguishes this fish from its relatives. The species epithet donnyi honors General Baron Albert-Ernest Donny (1841–1923), a name attached to the specimens through which, as with many Congo basin fishes of the period, the species reached European museums during the era of Belgian exploration of the Congo in the late nineteenth century.
Morphology
True to its name, Genyomyrus donnyi is built around an elongated jaw: both upper and lower jaws are drawn out into a distinctly lengthened snout, a shape that sets it apart from the short-faced look of many other mormyrids and from the fleshy chin barbel — the schnauzenorgan — of the better-known elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii. FishBase records a maximum length of 17.7 in total length, making this one of the larger mormyrids kept or encountered at all, well above the 7.9–9.8 in ceiling of popular aquarium species such as Campylomormyrus and Marcusenius.
As in every mormyrid, the tail carries a specialised electric organ, derived from modified muscle tissue, that generates a weak, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD). Electroreceptors spread across the skin pick up the pulsed field this organ produces, letting the fish electrolocate prey, obstacles and other fish in water too dark or turbid for vision to be much use, and — as in other mormyrids — the EOD waveform is thought to be individually and species-specific, a signal other Genyomyrus donnyi can in principle recognise even in zero visibility. The processing demands of this electrosensory stream are matched by an outsized brain: mormyrids as a family carry among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, built around a greatly enlarged cerebellum, a trait that has earned the family a reputation as unusually 'intelligent' fish.
Habitat
Genyomyrus donnyi is endemic to the Congo River system of Central Africa, recorded across Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. GBIF occurrence records place it widely through the basin, from the lower Congo River up into the Lualaba, the river's upper reach in the DRC — a considerably broader range than many of its narrow-endemic mormyrid relatives. FishBase describes it as demersal, a bottom-associated fish of the riverbed rather than the open water column.
The Congo basin's slow reaches and floodplain channels run dark and turbid — tannin-stained by decaying rainforest leaf litter and clouded with fine sediment — the classic low-visibility water in which an electric sense outperforms eyesight. Species-specific water-chemistry data for Genyomyrus donnyi have not been published, but general Mormyridae parameters — soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the mid-20s to high-20s °C — are a reasonable proxy for the dim, structurally complex habitat this fish shares with countless other Congo basin mormyrids.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Genyomyrus donnyi has been published, but its biology fits the general mormyrid pattern: a benthic forager that sweeps its electric field over the riverbed to locate prey hidden in mud, sand or leaf litter, using its elongated jaw to probe and extract it. Across the family the diet centres on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — rather than anything taken from open water.
Because electrolocation does most of the work in the dark, sediment-laden Congo basin water this species inhabits, feeding activity in mormyrids generally concentrates after dusk and through the night; a fish that appears inactive by day is typically resting rather than unwell. Nothing has been documented on captive feeding preferences for this species specifically, since it has essentially no presence in the aquarium trade.
Mating
Courtship and spawning in Genyomyrus donnyi have not been documented in the literature, and detail is sparse even for the wider Mormyridae. What is established for the family is that the electric organ discharge does double duty as a communication signal as well as a sensory one: EOD waveform and pulse rate can shift with reproductive condition and are thought to play a role in courtship and in recognising a suitable mate of the right species in water where vision counts for little.
Wild mormyrid reproduction is generally understood to be seasonal, cued to the rainy-season flood pulse that triggers spawning across many riverine African fishes as rising water floods marginal vegetation and food becomes abundant. Whether Genyomyrus donnyi follows this same flood-triggered pattern in the Congo basin has not been directly confirmed; this should be read as inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact for the species itself.
Breeding
Genyomyrus donnyi has essentially no captive-breeding record. Like the great majority of mormyrids, it is a fish that is rarely if ever spawned in aquaria, and the mechanics of its reproduction remain poorly known even from field observation. What can be said follows from the wider family: mormyrids are thought to be seasonal, flood-triggered spawners, and in at least some species eggs are believed to be scattered or laid among submerged vegetation, with some degree of guarding — but the specifics for this species have simply never been worked out.
Prospective keepers should treat any claim of captive spawning with real skepticism; there is no established protocol, no documented sexing method, and effectively no aquarium-trade history to draw on. This is a fish best regarded as a display curiosity rather than a breeding project.
In the aquarium
Genyomyrus donnyi is rarely encountered in the hobby, and documented aquarium-keeping experience is limited — most of what applies has to be extrapolated from mormyrids generally rather than from species-specific accounts. At a recorded maximum of 17.7 in total length it is a large fish that eventually needs a correspondingly large, long tank with a soft sand substrate its elongated jaw can probe, plenty of cover such as driftwood and roots, and subdued lighting; like other mormyrids it does poorly under bright light in a bare, brightly lit tank.
The care points that apply to mormyrids in general apply here too. They are sensitive to poor water quality and to many standard medications — dosing should be conservative — and overlapping electric fields between individuals can provoke aggression, so a single specimen is the safer default over a mixed group unless the tank is large enough to let fish keep their distance. Given its size, its scarcity in the trade and the general lack of published husbandry information, this is a fish for the patient specialist keeper rather than a realistic community or beginner choice.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Genyomyrus donnyi as Least Concern, an assessment FishBase dates to 2009. Unlike many narrow-endemic mormyrids confined to a single river system, this species is recorded widely across the Congo basin, from the lower Congo River up into the Lualaba, and spans four countries — Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo — which supports a status of no immediate concern.
As with most Congo basin fishes, detailed population trend data are sparse, and the species' fortunes are tied to the health of the wider river system it inhabits. Broader Congo basin pressures — sedimentation, habitat degradation, artisanal mining and any future hydropower development — are the kind of long-term concerns relevant to riverine species across the region, even though nothing in the available record points to a specific threat to Genyomyrus donnyi itself.
