Hippopotamyrus grahami is a little-known African mormyrid — a weakly electric relative of the elephantnoses — endemic to the Lake Victoria basin of East Africa, and, like every member of its order, a living relic: Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, are among the oldest surviving branches of the teleost fishes, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a toothed pad on the roof. Known as Graham's stonebasher, it carries a tail-mounted electric organ that fires a pulse-type discharge for both electrolocation in dim, vegetated shallows and communication with its own kind — the same sensory toolkit, evolved entirely independently, that also defines the unrelated electric knifefishes of South America. It is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, and much of its biology beyond a handful of scientific accounts remains sparsely documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Hippopotamyrus grahami was described by the British ichthyologist John Roxborough Norman in 1928, from a specimen collected in Lake Victoria by the fisheries biologist Michael Graham (1898–1972), who donated the holotype to the British Museum — the species epithet honours him. It belongs to the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, a scattered, deep-time radiation of freshwater fishes found today across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia. Within that order it sits in the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids — the order's exclusively African branch and, with roughly 200 described species, by far its most diverse.

The genus name Hippopotamyrus combines Greek roots referencing the hippopotamus (hippos, "horse" + potamos, "river") with the common mormyrid suffix -myrus (from myros, "eel"); per the ETYFish Project it alludes to the genus's distinctive lower median teeth, which resemble a hippopotamus's teeth in direction and length. Hippopotamyrus holds a couple of dozen species scattered across African river and lake systems, many of them — like H. grahami — narrow-range endemics distinguished as much by their electric organ discharge (EOD) as by outward appearance.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum size of about 9.8 in standard length for Hippopotamyrus grahami, making it a mid-sized mormyrid — larger than diminutive genera like Brienomyrus but well short of the largest elephantnoses. As in the rest of the family, the defining organ is internal rather than external: a specialised electric organ near the base of the tail generates a continuous, low-voltage, pulse-type electric field that the fish uses to read its surroundings in the dark.

The species lacks the elongated, trunk-like chin appendage — the schnauzenorgan — that gives Gnathonemus petersii its elephant-like profile; that structure is a feature of only some mormyrid genera, not the family as a whole. Mormyrids as a group are noted for having some of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, built around an enlarged cerebellum dedicated to processing the constant stream of electrosensory information — the physiological basis for their reputation as unusually capable, "thinking" fish.

Habitat

Hippopotamyrus grahami is native to the Lake Victoria basin of East Africa, recorded from Lake Victoria itself, the Lake Kyoga basin, the Victoria Nile and the Middle Akagera system — a range spanning parts of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. FishBase describes it as occupying shallow coastal freshwater areas, particularly over sandy bottoms, and notes that in Lake Kyoga it is found in habitat dense with water lilies.

This is an East African great-lakes habitat rather than the soft, tannin-stained blackwater some Congo-basin mormyrids inhabit — Lake Victoria and its satellite waters are large, comparatively well-mixed, productive lake systems. Species-specific water chemistry has not been well documented for H. grahami, but as with other mormyrids the fish is thought to rely on electrolocation over vision in low-visibility water, sheltering among vegetation and structure by day and becoming more active after dark.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies of Hippopotamyrus grahami are not available, but the species is presumed, like other mormyrids, to be a carnivore that forages for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — over sandy and vegetated lake margins, locating prey by electrolocation rather than sight.

Given the species' near-absence from the aquarium trade, no established aquarium feeding regime exists specifically for it. General mormyrid care guidance calls for live or frozen foods — bloodworm, blackworm and tubifex among them — offered after dark to match the fish's nocturnal foraging habits; a keeper who obtained this species should expect the same food-particular behaviour documented in better-known relatives.

Mating

Unusually for a little-known mormyrid, FishBase records some detail on the wild reproductive biology of Hippopotamyrus grahami: it is oviparous, with males growing larger than females, and it breeds twice yearly, timed to the region's rainy seasons. Spawning is preceded by an upriver migration, and fish reach maturity at roughly 2.8 in and above.

As in other mormyrids, the electric organ discharge is thought to play a role in courtship and species recognition alongside behavioural cues, though the specific signalling and pairing behaviour of H. grahami has not been described in the detail available for some better-studied genera. The precise spawning site and manner of egg deposition remain undocumented.

Breeding

Despite the useful detail on its wild spawning season and migration, Hippopotamyrus grahami is not known to have been bred in captivity, and no aquarium breeding account exists in the literature consulted for this profile. As with most mormyrids, its essentially unbred status in the hobby reflects both its rarity in the trade and the broader difficulty aquarists have reproducing this family.

Parental care has not been documented for this species. Some mormyrids are thought to guard eggs among plants or roots in the wild, but there is no confirmed account of that behaviour, or of any other post-spawning care, for H. grahami specifically. Aquarists should treat any specimen encountered as wild-collected rather than expect a captive-bred source.

In the aquarium

Hippopotamyrus grahami — traded, when available at all, under the vernacular name Graham's stonebasher — is essentially unestablished in the aquarium hobby, and specific husbandry parameters for the species are data sparse. What guidance exists comes from general mormyrid care rather than species-specific accounts.

That general guidance calls for a dimly lit tank with a sandy substrate and driftwood or cave-like cover, since mormyrids rely on electrolocation rather than vision and are most active after dark; soft, slightly acidic to neutral water is typically recommended, along with a diet of live or frozen invertebrate foods such as bloodworm, blackworm and tubifex. Water quality needs to be kept high, and, as with other mormyrids, the species is likely sensitive to medication and best kept solitary or with peaceful, appropriately sized tankmates rather than crowded or housed with boisterous fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hippopotamyrus grahami as Least Concern, an assessment FishBase dates to December 2015, with the species noted as having medium resilience and low vulnerability to fishing pressure.

Lake Victoria and its satellite waters have faced well-documented ecological upheaval over the past century — the Nile perch introduction, invasive water hyacinth, eutrophication and shoreline development among them — but none of this is documented as driving a species-specific decline in H. grahami, and its Least Concern status reflects a range that spans multiple water bodies across four countries rather than a single vulnerable population.
