About the genus

Boulengerella is the type genus of family Ctenoluciidae, the pike characins - elongated, torpedo-shaped predatory fish that convergently resemble true pikes despite no close relation to them. The atlas's five species are recorded from Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, French Guiana, and Guyana, across Amazon, Orinoco, and Guiana Shield river systems, and are notably large for characiforms - 25.8 up to 34.5 in. They are ambush predators, lying motionless near submerged wood or vegetation before striking at passing prey fish with a quick lunge.

Species such as Boulengerella cuvieri (bicuda) and Boulengerella lucius (golden pike-characin) appear in the specialist predatory-fish trade, where their long, streamlined bodies demand correspondingly long tanks and open swimming space; they can be skittish and are prone to rostrum damage against glass or hardscape in cramped quarters. Diet has traditionally leaned on live fish, though some keepers train individuals onto strips of fish or other meaty foods. Conservation is reassuring for the genus as assessed - four of five species Least Concern, with just one Not Evaluated.
