Brycinus is a genus of African tetra-like characins, most placed in the family Alestidae, distributed across river systems of West and Central Africa — the atlas's countries include Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, the Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, and Burundi. The genus spans a wide size range, from modest schooling fish to genuinely large river characins; the atlas's ten species run from about 3 in up to 21 in, reflecting how differently the smaller and larger Brycinus live — some as open-water shoalers, others as substantial predatory or omnivorous river fish.
Brycinus matters more to regional fisheries than to the international aquarium trade: the true big-scale tetra (B. macrolepidotus) and its larger relatives are important food fish across their range, while species like the large-scaled tetra (B. grandisquamis), yellow-fin tetra (B. leuciscus), and Schouteden's African tetra (B. schoutedeni) see only occasional interest from specialist keepers of African characins. Where they do turn up in tanks, expect an active, schooling fish that needs open swimming space and reasonably strong filtration to mimic river current. Conservation data are mixed across the genus — most assessed species are Least Concern, but two carry an Endangered rating, a sign that habitat pressure on some African river systems is catching up with even wide-ranging characins.
