Taxonomy & naming
Leiocassis poeciloptera was described by the German zoologists Johannes Müller and Franz Hermann Troschel in 1849. It belongs to the family Bagridae, the Old World bagrid catfishes, within the genus Bagrus — a group of roughly a dozen species of large-headed African river and lake predators that also includes the bayad (Bagrus bajad), the docmac (Bagrus docmak) and the Lake Malawi kampango (Bagrus meridionalis). The genus has a long taxonomic history and has at times been shuffled between older catfish groupings; Bagrus is the currently recognised and valid placement.
Leiocassis poeciloptera is essentially undocumented in the accessible aquarium and ichthyological literature: it is absent from FishBase, PlanetCatfish and Seriously Fish, and no public IUCN assessment could be located for it. This does not mean the species is dubious — mid-19th-century Müller & Troschel descriptions of African bagrids are often obscure, poorly redescribed species that have simply never attracted taxonomic or aquarium attention — but it does mean that species-specific facts here are limited, and general Bagrus genus biology has to stand in where the species record is silent.
This fish was long listed as Bagrus ramentosus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Leiocassis poeciloptera, the valid name followed here.
Morphology
Like other Bagrus, L. poeciloptera can be expected to have the family's typical build: a broad, flattened head, a large terminal mouth armed with bands of small teeth, and three pairs of long barbels used to feel out prey and food on the riverbed or lake floor at night. The body is elongate and scaleless — Bagrus, like nearly all catfishes, has naked skin rather than scales, a detail that matters directly for medicating it (see "In the aquarium").
No verified maximum length is available for L. poeciloptera specifically. Related Bagrus species vary hugely by species, from around 27.2 in total length in Bagrus filamentosus up to 39.4–59.1 in in the giant Lake Malawi kampango, Bagrus meridionalis. Given that pattern, L. poeciloptera should be assumed capable of substantial adult size rather than assumed to stay small — treat any size figure offered by a seller with caution until a verified adult length is available. As in other Bagrus, the dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated spines that lock erect and can jab a keeper or snag in a net.
Habitat
Specific locality data for Leiocassis poeciloptera could not be confirmed from the sources checked. As an African bagrid in the genus Bagrus, it almost certainly inhabits river channels or lake margins somewhere on the continent, in the warm, well-oxygenated fresh water typical of the genus — Bagrus species are riverine and lacustrine predators, not swamp or blackwater specialists.
Without a confirmed type locality or verified water chemistry for this species, no specific temperature or pH range can be given responsibly here. Prospective keepers should treat any water-parameter claim for this species as unverified and default to warm, well-filtered, well-oxygenated conditions typical of African river and lake bagrids until better data surfaces.
Feeding
Bagrus catfish are nocturnal piscivores and generalist predators — large-mouthed, big-headed hunters that take any fish or invertebrate they can swallow. There is no reason to expect L. poeciloptera differs from this genus-wide pattern: it should be treated as a predator that will eat tankmates rather than coexist with them.
In captivity, related Bagrus take large meaty foods readily — whole fish, prawn, cockle, earthworm and large-particle carnivore pellets. Any tankmate must be too large for the mouth of an adult Bagrus to swallow; small or slim-bodied fish, however peaceful, are at risk once this catfish reaches any size.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been documented for Leiocassis poeciloptera specifically. Within the genus, the best-studied case is Bagrus meridionalis on Lake Tanganyika-adjacent Lake Malawi, which shows biparental care and a wet-season spawning period (roughly January to March). Whether L. poeciloptera follows a similar pattern is unknown and should not be assumed without confirmation.
Breeding
Leiocassis poeciloptera is not known to be bred in the home aquarium, and there is no reason to expect that to change: like other large Bagrus and other big commercial bagrid, pimelodid and clariid catfishes, any captive reproduction in this genus that does occur is at commercial or research scale, typically via hormone-induced spawning of pond-held broodstock rather than natural pairing in a display tank. The fish simply grows too large, and needs conditions and space, for a hobbyist to replicate spawning. Anyone acquiring this species should assume it is wild-collected or farm-raised, not a candidate for home breeding, and plan its housing on that basis rather than hoping to breed a pair.
In the aquarium
Leiocassis poeciloptera should be treated as a size-trap fish: it is very likely, based on its genus, to be sold small and grow into a large, powerful predator that most home aquaria cannot house long-term. Until a verified adult length is published, prospective keepers should assume it needs the kind of large, heavily filtered system — often measured in hundreds of gallons or a pond — that other Bagrus species eventually require, and should not commit to this species without a realistic plan for rehoming or an oversized tank.
Two further care points follow directly from its genus. First, like other catfish it is scaleless, so it is likely to be more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and some other treatments — dose conservatively if treatment is ever needed. Second, Bagrus carry stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can jab a keeper and readily snag in a net; move this fish in a container rather than netting it. It is a nocturnal predator that will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so stock only with robust fish too large to be prey, and provide cover for daytime hiding.
Conservation
No public IUCN Red List assessment could be located for Leiocassis poeciloptera; its status should be treated as Not Evaluated rather than assumed safe. This is common for obscure, single-region African catfish species that have never attracted dedicated survey or assessment effort.
Without confirmed range or population data, no specific conservation pressures can be responsibly attributed to this species. As a general pattern in African Bagrus, river damming, sedimentation, overfishing and habitat degradation are the pressures most likely to affect any poorly known riverine bagrid, but this should not be stated as established fact for L. poeciloptera absent a real assessment.
