Taxonomy & naming
Leptorhamdia kamilai was described in 2026 by Gabriel S. C. Silva, Lucas Reia, Camila S. Souza, Eric V. Ywamoto and Claudio Oliveira, in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 24, issue 1, article e250037). It is placed in the tribe Brachyglaniini within the subfamily Heptapterinae of the family Heptapteridae — a group of four genera (Brachyglanis, Gladioglanis, Leptorhamdia and Myoglanis) diagnosed partly by an ossified, rigid spine on the principal unbranched pectoral-fin ray, and whose species diversity is centred on Guiana Shield rivers such as the Essequibo, Negro, Ventuari, Orinoco and Trombetas, with only a handful of species reaching Brazilian Shield rivers such as the Madeira and Xingu.
Before this description, Leptorhamdia comprised five valid species: L. aspredinoides from the Ventuari River, L. essequibensis from the Essequibo River, L. marmorata and L. nocturna from the Negro River, and L. schultzi from the Xingu River. A phylogenetic analysis combining mitochondrial (COI, Cytb) and nuclear (Rag2) sequence data placed the new species firmly within Leptorhamdia, as sister to L. marmorata and L. aspredinoides — two Guiana Shield species — confirming its generic placement and prompting the formal description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Leptorhamdia kamilai Silva, Reia, Souza, Ywamoto & Oliveira, 2026 as a valid, currently accepted name. The holotype (DZSJRP 16293, 3.64 in SL) was collected from the rio Juruena at PCH Segredo, Campos de Júlio Municipality, Mato Grosso State, Brazil (13°13'27.6"S, 59°01'34.4"W); paratypes are held at DZSJRP, LBP and MZUSP.
Morphology
Leptorhamdia kamilai is a modestly sized heptapterid: the holotype measures 3.64 in SL, and paratypes range from about 0.9–3.64 in SL. The head is trapezoid in dorsal view, with small, dorsally positioned eyes set close to the snout tip, and a subterminal mouth with the upper jaw slightly longer than the lower, bearing four to five irregular rows of conical teeth on the premaxilla and dentary. The maxillary barbel extends past the origin of the dorsal fin, and the outer mental barbel is longer than the inner, reaching the rear edge of the branchiostegal membrane.
Fins follow the family's general plan: a short, dorsally placed dorsal fin with i,6 rays, an elongate adipose fin (about 40–44.5% of standard length) fused along its rear margin to the caudal fin, a long anal fin with 19–22 rays, and a lanceolate caudal fin. The pectoral fin carries a short, strong spine with retrorse serrations along both margins, more developed on the posterior edge — a spine that, as in other catfishes, can lock rigid and should be handled with care. Vertebral count is 46–47 (15 precaudal, 31–32 caudal). Leptorhamdia kamilai is distinguished from every other species in the genus by a conspicuous pale, yellowish-in-life collar-band running from just behind the supraoccipital, along the flanks, to the underside of the branchiostegal membrane — a trait absent from all its congeners, which instead show uniform coloration across the head and body. It differs further by its higher anal-fin ray count (19–22, versus 12–17 in other Leptorhamdia species) and its vertebral count (46–47, versus 38–57 depending on species).
Habitat
Leptorhamdia kamilai is known from tributaries of the upper Arinos and Juruena rivers (Tapajós River basin) and the Aripuanã River (Madeira River basin), Mato Grosso State, central Brazil — two adjacent drainages that share several other fish lineages, consistent with recent geomorphological connections between their headwaters. Specimens from both basins are morphologically indistinguishable, though genetic samples from the Aripuanã population were not available to confirm whether the two are a single continuous lineage.
The species lives buried in the leaf litter covering a muddy river bottom, at a collection depth of roughly 1.5 metres in the type locality (rio dos Patos, a tributary of the upper rio Arinos). Collecting it required divers to remove the surface mud layer by hand to reach the leaf-litter bank beneath. Among all Brachyglaniini, only L. kamilai and the Peruvian Myoglanis koepckei are known to use this leaf-litter microhabitat; every other member of the tribe instead lives in fast-flowing, rock-bottomed rapids. No published temperature or pH figures accompany the description.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for Leptorhamdia kamilai specifically. As general context for the tribe Brachyglaniini, not a documented finding for this species: related heptapterid catfishes are typically small invertebrate feeders. This species' leaf-litter, buried lifestyle likely shapes its foraging in ways not yet studied — a fish living within decaying plant matter over mud is plausibly feeding on the invertebrates that colonise that litter — but this is inference, not a reported observation.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Leptorhamdia kamilai. Its concealed, leaf-litter-buried habits make direct field observation difficult, and nothing specific about reproduction can be stated here without guessing.
Breeding
Breeding is not documented for this species, and Leptorhamdia kamilai is not established in the aquarium hobby. Across two separate expeditions to its type locality, the describing team collected only eight specimens, reflecting how difficult the species is to find and sample — a further obstacle to any captive-breeding account existing. There is no basis here for describing a spawning mode, egg type, or parental-care pattern.
In the aquarium
Leptorhamdia kamilai is not a trade species; it was described in 2026 from a small number of wild-collected specimens, and no aquarium husbandry data exists for it. Its documented wild habitat — buried in leaf litter over a muddy substrate at around 1.5 metres depth — suggests that any attempt to keep it would need a deep leaf-litter or fine, soft substrate layer and dim, sheltered conditions, but this is an inference from field habitat rather than confirmed husbandry. As with any catfish carrying pectoral spines, careful handling (a container rather than a net) would be prudent if the species were ever collected or transported.
Its true adult size (the largest examined specimen was 3.64 in SL, roughly 3.5 in), temperament and specific water requirements remain otherwise undocumented for aquarium purposes.
Conservation
Leptorhamdia kamilai has not yet received a formal IUCN Red List assessment, as is typical for a species described in 2026. The describing authors, however, recommended Least Concern (LC) status under IUCN criteria, noting that the species was collected at several sampling sites across the upper Tapajós and Aripuanã basins with no imminent threats detected — a recommendation from the primary literature rather than a completed Red List listing.
Because it is known from a specialised, hard-to-sample leaf-litter microhabitat, its true population status and any localised pressures (sedimentation, deforestation-linked habitat change) are not well characterised beyond the authors' preliminary assessment.
