Chlamydogobius is a genus of small gobies endemic to Australia, restricted to isolated waters in the continent's arid interior - artesian springs, desert waterholes, and a handful of geographically tiny spring complexes. Species such as the Elizabeth Springs goby (C. micropterus) and Edgbaston goby (C. squamigenus) are each confined to a single spring complex, among the most range-restricted freshwater fish in Australia. Atlas species are small, ranging from about 1.5–2.5 in. The desert goby, Chlamydogobius eremius, is by far the most widespread and best studied, valued by physiologists for its extreme tolerance of heat, low oxygen, and swings in salinity that let it persist in harsh desert-spring conditions.
This genus is a case study in extinction risk concentrated by geography rather than trade pressure - it draws little aquarium interest outside Australia's native-fish keeping community, where the hardy desert goby is the species most commonly kept for its resilience in captivity. The real story is conservation: among the atlas's six species, one is assessed as Critically Endangered and another as Vulnerable, both confined to isolated spring systems under pressure from groundwater extraction and introduced species, while three remain unassessed - a genus where habitat loss on the scale of a single spring could mean the loss of an entire species.
