Compsura is a small genus of characins (family Characidae), one of the many tetra-relative genera scattered across the Neotropics. The atlas covers 2 species, C. gorgonae and C. heterura, both tiny even for characins at 1–1.5 in. The atlas records the genus from Brazil and Panama - a notably wide, disjunct span for such a small genus, and a reminder of how patchy sampling can leave gaps in a genus's known range rather than a continuous one.
Neither species carries an English common name in the atlas, and neither has any real presence in the aquarium trade - this is a genus of taxonomic and faunal-survey interest rather than a hobby fish. Both currently sit at Least Concern conservation status, though data on their ecology and abundance in the wild remain sparse.
