Dzihunia is a small genus of stone loaches restricted to Central Asia, with the atlas' 3 species - including the Bukhara stone loach (D. amudarjensis) - known from Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Like other stone loaches, they are small, elongate, bottom-dwelling fish with a sucker-like mouth ringed by barbels, adapted to picking invertebrates and algae off gravel and stone in the cool, fast-flowing streams of the Amu Darya drainage and neighboring highland basins.
These fish stay small, around 3 in, and are essentially unknown in the aquarium trade - Dzihunia is a genus of scientific rather than hobby interest, documented mainly through regional ichthyological survey work rather than commercial collection. Conservation data are thin, with two of the three species not yet formally evaluated and the third listed as Data Deficient, a common situation for narrow-range Central Asian stream fish that receive little dedicated fieldwork.
