Taxonomy & naming
Gangaichthys indonepalicus was described in 2026 by Akshay Khandekar, Tejas Thackeray, Yue He, Anil Mohapatra and Ishan Agarwal in ZooKeys, as the sole species in the new genus Gangaichthys, family Chaudhuriidae — the earthworm eels. This is the first chaudhuriid species documented on this atlas, and it is worth being precise about what the family actually is: Chaudhuriidae sits within the order Synbranchiformes, specifically in the suborder Mastacembeloidei, which it shares with the spiny eels (family Mastacembelidae). That places earthworm eels as relatives of the spiny eels, not of the true eels of order Anguilliformes, and not even particularly close to the swamp eels of family Synbranchidae — the other main Synbranchiformes lineage — despite the superficial resemblance all of these elongate, limbless fishes share by convergent evolution.
Molecular data placed Gangaichthys firmly within Chaudhuriidae, more than 20% divergent in the mitochondrial CO1 barcode from the two other chaudhuriid genera for which comparable sequence data exist — a deep split supporting its status as a genuinely distinct genus rather than a divergent population of an existing one. The genus name Gangaichthys combines Ganga, the Ganges River whose alluvial plain the species inhabits, with the Greek ichthys ('fish'). The species epithet indonepalicus reflects the distribution recorded by the Catalog of Fishes, spanning the type locality in Bihar State, India, and possibly extending across the international border to Nawalparasi District in Nepal's Lumbini Province — 'of India and Nepal.' The paper's own dedicated etymology section was not available in the source material captured for this article; this derivation follows directly from the genus and species names as used throughout the paper's title and abstract, rather than from a direct quotation.
Morphology
The holotype measures 1.6 in standard length. As a stygobite — an obligate groundwater dweller — Gangaichthys indonepalicus shows the classic suite of subterranean adaptations: reduced eyes, a total absence of body pigmentation, and, unusually even among cave and aquifer fishes, an apparent absence of ribs, a finding from micro-CT imaging of the holotype. Diagnostic osteological characters separating it from other chaudhuriid genera include neural spines that are laterally narrow and taper to a point posteriorly or dorso-posteriorly, with no spine-like projection on the neural arch in front of the neural spine; a preorbital extension of the ectopterygoid that does not reach beyond the coronoid process of the dentary; and an elongate metapterygoid. Meristically, the species carries 64 vertebrae (28 abdominal, 36 caudal), a single pectoral fin-ray, six caudal fin-rays, 37 dorsal fin-rays and 35 anal fin-rays — fin-ray and vertebral counts that, together with the osteology, distinguish it from every other known chaudhuriid genus and species.
Habitat
Gangaichthys indonepalicus is known only from bore-wells tapping the alluvial groundwater aquifers of the Indo-Gangetic Plain, specifically near Balgangwa village in Pashchim Champaran District, Bihar State, northern India, with the Catalog of Fishes noting a possible additional occurrence across the India–Nepal border at Triveni, Nawalparasi District, Lumbini Province, Nepal. All three known specimens — the holotype and two paratypes, one of them damaged — were recovered from working bore-wells rather than from any surface water body, confirming a genuinely stygobitic, aquifer-dwelling existence with no known surface population. The description's authors note that this find, made in the same village that recently yielded a separately described blind cave loach (Gitchak nakana), reveals a previously unrecognised and evidently species-rich subterranean habitat: the alluvial groundwater aquifers beneath the Indo-Gangetic Plain, a habitat type not previously known to support obligate cave-fish fauna at all.
Feeding
No gut-content or feeding observations have been published for this species. Stygobitic fishes in aquifer and cave systems generally subsist on whatever organic material and small invertebrate prey filters down through the substrate from the surface, but this is a general expectation for groundwater fishes, not a confirmed observation for Gangaichthys indonepalicus.
Mating
No mating or courtship behaviour has been documented. The original description is a taxonomic account based on three specimens collected incidentally during well operation, with no behavioural observations.
Breeding
There is no breeding record for this species in any respect — no eggs, larvae or breeding condition have been reported. Given that Gangaichthys indonepalicus is known from only three specimens recovered from working bore-wells, essentially nothing about its reproductive biology can be stated without speculation.
In the aquarium
Gangaichthys indonepalicus has no history in the aquarium hobby and, as a genuinely stygobitic species known from only three specimens taken incidentally from working groundwater wells, it has no realistic prospect of entering the trade. A blind, unpigmented aquifer specialist with no documented tolerance for surface light, temperature swings or open-water conditions is not a candidate for captive husbandry, and any collection pressure on a species known from a single well field in Bihar would directly threaten what may be its entire known population. This is a species that should stay in the wild — its scientific interest lies in what it reveals about a previously unrecognised aquifer ecosystem, not in the aquarium trade.
Conservation
Gangaichthys indonepalicus has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Known from exactly three specimens, all recovered from bore-wells at or near a single village in Bihar, it is inherently at extreme risk from any disturbance to the local aquifer — over-extraction of groundwater, contamination from agricultural runoff or waste, or changes to the recharge zones of the Indo-Gangetic alluvial plain could each affect the entire known population without any surface-level warning sign. The description's authors frame the discovery as revealing a previously unrecognised subterranean ecosystem whose full extent, species richness and vulnerability remain essentially unstudied; groundwater-quality protection across the alluvial aquifers of Bihar and the adjoining Nepal terai is the only conservation measure currently identifiable for a fish this narrowly known.
