Taxonomy & the radiation
The lone species was described by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 as Haplochromis euchilus (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, ser. 10, vol. 16), from material collected at Deep Bay, Chilumba, on the northwestern shore of Lake Malawi; the lectotype (BMNH 1935.6.14.1016) was later fixed by Eccles & Trewavas (1989). The generic name is straightforward Greek — cheilos (lip) + chromis (an old name for a perch-like fish) — and frankly tells you the whole story of the genus in two roots.
Cheilochromis was raised as a separate genus by Eccles & Trewavas in their 1989 revision of Malawian haplochromine genera, splitting euchilus out of the catch-all Haplochromis into a monotypic genus alongside dozens of other small genera carved from that radiation. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both currently list the species as the valid Cheilochromis euchilus (Pseudocrenilabrinae). There is, however, a live taxonomic disagreement worth flagging honestly: the IUCN Red List, following Konings (2016, Malawi Cichlids in Their Natural Habitat, 5th ed.), now treats it as Chilotilapia euchilus, folding it back together with Chilotilapia rhoadesii. That move is no longer just an opinion — the SNP-based phylogenomic analysis of Hulsey et al. (2022, Genome Biology and Evolution 14(4):evac051) recovered C. euchilus and the normal-lipped C. rhoadesii as well-supported sister taxa, which is exactly the result that justifies lumping the two genera. So depending on which authority a keeper consults, the same fish is 'Cheilochromis' or 'Chilotilapia,' and the genus Cheilochromis may be on borrowed time.
Within the lake's species flock of perhaps 700–1,000 cichlids, euchilus sits in the 'non-mbuna' (haplochromine) assemblage rather than among the rock-dwelling mbuna — a placement reinforced by Hulsey et al., who found the other Malawi fat-lips (Placidochromis milomo, Eclectochromis ornatus, Placidochromis 'Mbenji fatlip') in the same largely sand-dwelling lineage, while the one mbuna fat-lip, Abactochromis labrosus, fell elsewhere entirely.
Defining features
Being monotypic, the 'genus' is defined by the one species, and one feature dominates: greatly hypertrophied, fleshy lips that form finger-like lobes on both the upper and lower jaw. The body is the elongate, laterally compressed shape typical of open-water Malawi haplochromines, with a fairly pointed snout. Dominant males color up into a memorable scheme — an iridescent blue-green face and forebody over dark vertical bars — that hobbyists rate among the more distinctive in the lake, while females and subdominant males are a plain silver-grey, which matters for keepers (see below).
Size estimates vary by source and should be read with that in mind. FishBase lists a maximum of 14 in total length, but that figure likely reflects an outlier or rounded record; the field reference malawi.si gives more typical wild adults as males to about 10 in and females to about 7.5 in, and aquarium specimens commonly top out around 8–10 in. Sexual dimorphism is clear: males grow larger, develop the breeding dress, and carry slightly more pointed fins.
Telling it from look-alikes is mostly about the lips and what they're attached to. Several unrelated Malawi cichlids independently evolved fat lips — Placidochromis milomo ('VC-10'), Eclectochromis ornatus, and others — so a thick lip alone is not diagnostic; euchilus is larger and more elongate than most of these, with its own color pattern. Critically, lip development is plastic: Konings and field observers note that individuals feeding more on sand show reduced lip swelling, so a sand-living euchilus can look surprisingly normal-lipped, while its sister Chilotilapia rhoadesii has ordinary lips despite the close kinship.
Range & habitat
Cheilochromis euchilus is endemic to Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa/Niassa) and is found lake-wide, with the IUCN assessment recording it from the Malawian, Mozambican, and Tanzanian shores and giving an estimated extent of occurrence of about 49,311 mi² and an area of occupancy near 1,137 mi². It is regularly encountered at many localities rather than confined to one shore, and recognized geographic color variants exist (e.g. populations labeled 'Maleri Island,' 'Mbenji Island,' 'Matema').
The biotope is the 'intermediate' habitat — the transition zone where rock gives way to open sand — rather than the pure rock reefs of the mbuna or the deep open water. malawi.si and the IUCN both place it mainly in shallow water, usually no deeper than about 26 ft, foraging over sand but working the adjacent rocks where its lips earn their keep. FishBase summarizes it as occurring in inshore rocky areas all around the lake.
In-situ water chemistry is the hard, alkaline Rift-lake profile common to all Malawi cichlids: FishBase records a pH of roughly 8.0–8.5 and a hardness around 10–15 dH, with surface temperatures of about 75–79 °F (75–79 °F). Those are not aquarium recommendations so much as the actual lake conditions the fish is adapted to, and they set the floor for keeping it well.
Ecology & diet
The genus is built around a single trophic specialty: crevice-feeding on small, hidden invertebrates. The hypertrophied lips function as a compliant gasket — the fish presses its mouth over a crack or against a sand pocket, the lips seal the gap, and suction extracts whatever is sheltering inside. Hulsey et al. (2022), drawing on Ribbink et al. (1983) and others, describe exactly this mechanism for rocky-substrate fat-lips across both African and Neotropical cichlids, and note the trade-off that comes with it: hypertrophied-lip species are more efficient at extracting prey from crevices but worse at catching evasive, open-water prey (Elmer et al. 2010; Colombo et al. 2013). The lips themselves are also thought to absorb the wear of repeated contact with hard, rough rock (Fryer & Iles 1972; Greenwood 1974). FishBase records the diet simply as insects/invertebrates and places the species at a trophic level near 3.2 — a low-level carnivore rather than a piscivore.
There is no real divergence in niche *within* the genus, because there is only one species — but the genus is best understood through the contrast with its relatives. The same crevice-suction niche has been filled repeatedly and independently in the lake: Cheilochromis euchilus on the intermediate zone, Placidochromis milomo on deeper rock, Abactochromis labrosus among the mbuna, plus parallel fat-lips in Lake Victoria (Haplochromis chilotes) and Lake Tanganyika (Lobochilotes labiatus). That euchilus's own sister, Chilotilapia rhoadesii, is a thin-lipped snail-crusher underlines how labile this feeding morphology is — the lips can come and go over short evolutionary distances.
Behaviour & breeding
Like virtually all Malawi haplochromines, Cheilochromis euchilus is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder, and it follows the genus-typical non-mbuna pattern rather than the territorial cave-spawning of substrate breeders. There is no fixed pair bond and, notably, no constructed bower or sand crater: malawi.si reports that bower construction has not been observed, with breeding males simply displaying in the shallow intermediate habitat to passing females. After a circling courtship the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth — FishBase's terse note, 'female takes eggs in mouth' — and broods them, then the fry, for roughly three weeks. Brooding females leave the open zone, hide among rocks, and stay solitary, which is the usual mouthbrooder strategy of trading feeding for protection.
Socially it is, by Malawi standards, on the calmer end. malawi.si characterizes it as 'generally a relatively peaceful cichlid' that nonetheless turns very aggressive toward similar-looking species — the classic congener/look-alike intolerance that drives much rift-lake aggression. Lake observers also note that males in full breeding dress are rarely seen in the wild, hinting that the spectacular coloration is intermittent and tied to active spawning rather than worn constantly. Reproduction is unfussy under good conditions: generation length is short (the IUCN gives 2–3 years), maturity comes within the first couple of years, and the alkaline, warm, stable water of the lake is itself the main breeding trigger.
In the aquarium
This is a large, deep-bodied hap that needs real space. A single specimen can be squeezed into a 75-gallon (about 75 US gal) tank, but the honest baseline for a community of Malawi haps is a 6-foot footprint; field-oriented references such as malawi.si recommend tanks of at least 210 US gal (around 210 US gal) with a 78.5 in length, fine sand, and a few rock piles that leave open swimming room. Match the lake: hard, alkaline water (pH ~8), high mineral content, temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s °F (75–81 °F). It is best kept as one male with several females, or worked carefully into a mixed 'all-male' hap display.
The lived-in advice from keepers is consistent and useful. On cichlid-forum.com, owners report that males are slow to develop color — often six to nine months before they 'come into dress,' and a plain silver subadult is normal, not a defect. They also disagree on temperament in a revealing way: in some all-male tanks the euchilus sits at the top of the pecking order and bullies venustus-grade tankmates, while other keepers find it too timid to display fully when housed with very dominant fish — so individual personality and tankmate selection matter more than a fixed 'peaceful' label. Several keepers conclude it shows best kept as a pair or harem rather than in an all-male tank, which squares with the wild observation that breeding color is occasional.
Difficulty is moderate. It is not a delicate fish, but the common mistakes are familiar Malawi ones: too small a tank for its eventual size, soft or acidic water, and a diet too rich in protein. As a low-trophic invertebrate feeder it does best on a quality spirulina-inclusive or mixed pellet rather than a beefheart/feeder regimen — overfeeding rich, fatty foods invites the digestive bloat that plagues Malawi haps. Stable, well-filtered, mineral-hard water and restraint at feeding time cover most of what can go wrong. It is best considered an intermediate-level fish: undemanding chemically, but demanding in tank size and tankmate planning.
Conservation
At the species level the picture is reassuring and should not be overstated. The IUCN Red List assesses euchilus (as Chilotilapia euchilus, amended 2019 from the 2018 assessment by Konings, Kazembe & Makocho) as Least Concern, with a stable population, a lake-wide range, and no recorded major decline; it occurs within Lake Malawi National Park, so at least part of its range is formally protected. Because Cheilochromis is monotypic, that single Least Concern listing *is* the genus-level status — there is no spread of categories to report. The named threats are modest: incidental subsistence hook-and-line catch (it is not specifically targeted as food) and steady extraction for the ornamental trade, where it is sold as 'Haplochromis euchilus' or 'thick-lip hap.'
The more serious risks are not to this species in particular but to the lake that defines it, and they bear on every Malawi endemic. Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241) document the basin's pressures: heavy fishing that has driven the collapse of the chambo (Oreochromis spp.) tilapia fishery; sediment and nutrient loading washing off deforested catchments; and a deep-water (below ~984 ft) warming of roughly +33 °F (Vollmer et al. 2005) that strengthens thermal stratification, suppresses the mixing that brings nutrients up from depth, and so erodes lake-wide productivity. Invasive-species introductions add a further, harder-to-predict risk. A shallow intermediate-zone forager like euchilus lives squarely in the most human-impacted band of the lake, so while its IUCN status is genuinely Least Concern today, that verdict rests on a strained ecosystem — the honest summary is a secure species in an increasingly stressed home.
