Taxonomy & the radiation
George Albert Boulenger erected Eretmodus in 1898 for material collected by J. E. S. Moore around Kinyamkolo (modern Mpulungu, Zambia) at the lake's southern tip; the type species is Eretmodus cyanostictus. The name pairs Greek eretmos ("oar") with odous ("tooth"), a nod to the broad, oar- or spatula-shaped tips of the jaw teeth used to comb algae from rock. Eretmodus sits within the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and is the namesake of the eretmodine cichlids (sometimes ranked as tribe Eretmodini), a small endemic flock that also contains Spathodus and Tanganicodus. For over a century only one Eretmodus species was named; Warren Burgess split off the northern populations as E. marksmithi in 2012 (in Tanganika Magazyn), honouring American aquarist and author Mark Smith, and diagnosed it on barring and a subterminal — rather than terminal — mouth.
The radiation is more tangled than the three tidy genera suggest, and this is where Eretmodus earns its place in the lake's story. Liem's (1979) osteology treated Spathodus and Tanganicodus as a derived sister group to a more generalised Eretmodus. But the landmark molecular study — Rüber, Verheyen & Meyer, "Replicated evolution of trophic specializations," PNAS 1999 — sequenced mtDNA across the whole eretmodine assemblage and found six geographic lineages that flatly disagree with the genus-level taxonomy. None of the three tooth-shape types (Eretmodus-like, Spathodus-like, Tanganicodus-like) came out monophyletic, and the authors inferred at least eight independent transitions between feeding morphologies around the lake. In other words, the "Eretmodus" body-and-tooth plan has evolved more than once from local stock; the genus as named is better read as a recurring ecological design than a single branch. That makes the eretmodines a textbook case of parallel/convergent evolution within one small lake, on a par with the better-known mbuna and Tropheus stories.
Defining features
Eretmodus is built for clinging, not cruising. The body is short, deep and laterally compressed, the head blunt, and the swim bladder strongly reduced — so the fish is negatively buoyant and rests or hops between rocks rather than hanging in midwater, exactly the trick that earns the eretmodines their "goby" nickname (FishBase, after Konings 1998). The long spiny dorsal runs roughly 23–25 spines, and the unpaired fins and thickset caudal peduncle help the fish brace against surge. Coloration is a brownish-grey ground broken by pale vertical bars and, in classic populations, a scatter of brilliant sky-blue spots over the head and upper body — the trait that gives E. cyanostictus its species name and the trade name "Tanganyika clown."
These are tiny cichlids: E. cyanostictus reaches about 3.5 in (3.5 in) total length, while the more recently described E. marksmithi is smaller, recorded to only about 1.9 in (2 in) standard length. The cleanest way to separate the two follows Burgess (2012): E. cyanostictus has a terminal mouth, around five light bars that fade out on the upper body and never cross the caudal peduncle, and heavy blue spotting; E. marksmithi has a subterminal (more downturned) mouth, 7–8 bold bars running the full depth of the body with the last crossing the caudal peduncle, and only sparse blue dots, mostly on the head. Telling Eretmodus from its eretmodine cousins comes down to dentition, the diagnostic character in the group: Eretmodus carries the widest, most numerous comb-like teeth, suited to scraping a broad swath of rock, whereas Tanganicodus has a narrower, more pointed "picking" dentition and a more pointed snout, and Spathodus an intermediate plan.
Range & habitat
The genus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and, between its two species, rings essentially the whole shoreline — but each species holds a different stretch. FishBase, following Konings, places E. cyanostictus in the southern lake, broadly from Kipili (Tanzania) round to Moliro (DR Congo), while E. marksmithi occupies the northern two-thirds to three-quarters of the basin (Burgess 2012). Because the two replace each other geographically and the lake's rocky coasts are broken up by river mouths and sand bays, populations are fragmented into many allopatric colour races that hobbyists tag by collecting point — "Kigoma," "Kasanga," "Kapampa," "Burundi" and so on — a structure the mtDNA work of Rüber et al. (1999) showed mirrors real, deep phylogeographic breaks.
Habitat is narrow and unmistakable: the turbulent, oxygen-saturated surge zone of rocky coasts, typically the top 0–16 ft and often just 3–7 ft down, over bottoms of small cobbles roughly 4–16 in (4–15.5 in) across with sand pockets between them (FishBase; Burgess 2012). This is the most physically demanding band of the littoral, scoured by wave action that keeps oxygen high and competitors few. The water is hard and alkaline — FishBase gives pH about 8.0–9.0, hardness around 9–19 dH and surf-zone temperatures near 75–79°F (75–79 °F) — and the genus is among the more stenotopic (habitat-restricted) of the rock cichlids, rarely straying from clean, current-swept stone.
Ecology & diet
Eretmodus is an aufwuchs grazer, and the whole animal is engineered around that job. It works the upper surfaces of cobbles, combing off the "biocover" — the felt of filamentous algae plus the diatoms, bacteria and trapped micro-invertebrates living in it — with its broad, spatulate teeth (FishBase, after Konings 1998 and Burgess 2012). FishBase pegs E. cyanostictus at a low trophic level near 2.1, consistent with a near-herbivore; E. marksmithi is noted to take more small invertebrates (crustaceans, mites, insects and insect larvae) alongside the algal mat, nudging it slightly higher up the food web. The reduced swim bladder is part of the feeding adaptation as much as the locomotion: a fish that sinks can plant itself on a rock in surge and scrape, where a buoyant fish would be swept off.
Within the eretmodine flock, diet is exactly what differentiates the genera, and Eretmodus occupies the "broad rasper" end. Tanganicodus irsacae, with its pointed snout and picking teeth, behaves more as a selective invertebrate-and-diatom picker, and Spathodus erythrodon falls in between — three ways of partitioning the same thin rocky film. The deep lesson of Rüber et al. (1999) is that these niches have been assembled repeatedly from local populations, so the algae-scraping "Eretmodus role" is best understood as a recurring functional slot in the surge-zone community rather than the property of a single lineage. Ecologically the genus overlaps with, and competes against, the far more famous Tropheus, which grazes the same rocky aufwuchs slightly deeper and in shoals.
Behaviour & breeding
Socially, Eretmodus lives at low density as territorial pairs rather than in the roving colonies typical of Tropheus. Both sexes defend a patch of rock; males are the more aggressive, and only some develop a pronounced nuchal hump, which makes sexing by eye unreliable (the firmest method is venting). The standout feature is the breeding system. Eretmodus cyanostictus is a monogamous, biparental mouthbrooder — documented in detail by Morley & Balshine (Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2003) and in behavioural work by Grüter & Taborsky and colleagues at Bern. The female spawns a small clutch (roughly 20–25 eggs, very large for the fish's size) on the territory, takes the eggs into her mouth, and after one to two weeks transfers the developing young to the male, who completes the brood. Total incubation runs to around three to four weeks, and the fry — already 0.3–0.4 in (0.5 in) at release — emerge as competent miniatures.
Why two parents, when most Tanganyikan mouthbrooders manage with one? Field and lab studies (Grüter & Taborsky 2004; Morley & Balshine 2002) point to the surge-zone lifestyle: territories are scarce and worth defending, re-mating chances are limited by a male-biased operational sex ratio, and a brooding fish cannot feed, so sharing the burden lets the pair hold the territory and still eat. Pair bonds are durable, and the handover itself is a coordinated, ritualised event. Spathodus and Tanganicodus share the same biparental mode, marking the whole eretmodine group as a rare island of cooperative care in a lake dominated by maternal-only brooders and lamprologine cave-spawners.
In the aquarium
Goby cichlids are charming and frequently sold as easy beginner Tanganyikans, but that reputation is misleading — they are best treated as an intermediate-to-advanced fish, and experienced keepers say so plainly. Practical Fishkeeping's profile is blunt that they are "not easy to keep," demanding strong aeration and immaculate, fully oxygenated water; the magazine even suggests a marine-style wavemaker over rounded 6 in (6 in) stones to mimic the surge zone. Their natural niche is shallow and turbulent, so a long footprint matters more than height: a 36 in / 35.5 in tank (roughly 40–55 US gal) is a sensible practical minimum for a pair or small group, with rockwork that creates clear sightline breaks and refuges.
The honest difficulties are two. First, aggression and pairing. On forums such as cichlid-forum.com, keepers consistently report that pair formation is violent — a dominant male or alpha female may harass or kill tankmates — and that the reliable route is to grow out a group of four to six, let a pair declare itself, then rehome the extras; even an established male will periodically rough up his mate, so escape routes are non-negotiable. Second, diet and "bloat." As grazers with a low trophic level, they need an algae- and Spirulina-based diet; keepers who feed protein-heavy or monotonous dry flake repeatedly trigger the digestive condition Tanganyikan keepers call bloat, the same killer that stalks Tropheus. Two further cautions corroborated across sources: do not mix Eretmodus with shell-dwelling or rock Lamprologines that occupy a different microhabitat and out-compete or stress them, and do not house Eretmodus, Spathodus and Tanganicodus together — they hybridise readily, and mixing colour races of one species muddies wild bloodlines just as badly. Of the two species, E. cyanostictus is the one you'll usually find and the better-documented choice; E. marksmithi is far less common in the hobby and care information is thin. Neither is a community fish for a mixed tank.
Conservation
Both named Eretmodus species are assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern — E. cyanostictus (reassessed 25 February 2025) and E. marksmithi (28 February 2025) — reflecting wide distributions along Tanganyika's rocky coasts and no evidence of population collapse. Neither is CITES-listed, and FishBase rates fishing vulnerability as low. They are collected for the aquarium trade, mostly from accessible northern (Burundi) and other shoreline sites, but the trade is small and the fish are not food species, so direct collection pressure is modest rather than negligible. The honest summary is the careful one: the species themselves are not currently threatened, even as the lake around them is under real strain.
That lake-level strain is where the genuine risk sits, and it falls hardest on exactly the shallow rocky littoral Eretmodus depends on. Tanganyika has warmed and stratified more strongly over the past century, reducing deep mixing and the nutrient upwelling that feeds the food web; O'Reilly et al. (Nature, 2003) linked this to an estimated ~20% decline in primary productivity, and Cohen et al. (PNAS, 2016) documented warming-driven loss of oxygenated benthic habitat amounting to roughly 38% of historical extent. Sedimentation from deforestation and farming in the catchment smothers nearshore rock and the algal film grazers like Eretmodus scrape, degrading the very biocover the genus eats. Layered on top is the pelagic fishery for clupeids (dagaa) and Lates that feeds four nations — Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania and Zambia — and which, while not targeting goby cichlids, indexes the broader pressure on the basin now managed (imperfectly) through the Lake Tanganyika Authority under the 2003 Convention. So: stable species, stressed lake — and because Eretmodus is a narrow surge-zone endemic broken into many small isolated populations, localised habitat loss could quietly erode individual colour races long before any range-wide assessment changes.
