Taxonomy & the radiation
Grammatotria was erected by George Albert Boulenger in 1899 for a single species, Grammatotria lemairii, and it remains monotypic to this day — one genus, one valid species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer's, via the California Academy of Sciences) and FishBase both list it under Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae, with the synonym Parectodus hemelrycki long since folded into G. lemairii. The species epithet honours Captain Charles François Alexandre Lemaire, a Belgian officer and explorer of the Congo; the type locality is Moliro, on the Congolese (then Zaire) shore of the lake. The genus name derives from Greek roots (gramma, a mark or line) referencing its markings — note that the popular gloss of 'tria' as 'tree' seen on some hobby pages is a mistranslation, not a real etymology.
Where Grammatotria sits is more interesting than how many species it holds. It is placed in the tribe Ectodini, the sand- and rock-dwelling lineage that Poll (1986) and later workers recognised among Tanganyika's twelve-to-sixteen cichlid tribes. Multiple molecular studies — Sturmbauer & Meyer's early mitochondrial work (1993) and, most pointedly, Koblmüller et al. (2004) in Journal of Molecular Evolution (J. Mol. Evol. 58:79-96) — recover Grammatotria as the earliest-branching or near-basal Ectodine, sister to the rest of the tribe (the Xenotilapia/Enantiopus/Ectodus/Callochromis/Cyathopharynx/Ophthalmotilapia assemblage). Koblmüller and colleagues showed the Ectodini diversified rapidly into four clades, repeatedly recolonised rocky habitats from a sand-dwelling ancestor, and independently evolved biparental mouthbrooding. Grammatotria, retaining maternal mouthbrooding and a sand-flat lifestyle, looks much like the ancestral condition the radiation departed from — which is why it is sometimes described, loosely, as the 'founding' lineage of the tribe.
Defining features
Because the genus is monotypic, its defining features are simply those of G. lemairii. It is an elongate, silvery, fusiform cichlid with a notably pointed, downturned snout, large eyes set high on the head, and a fairly small, protrusible mouth adapted for picking and sifting rather than biting. Most diagnostic for field identification is a distinct dark blotch on the caudal peduncle (and, on northern fish especially, a scatter of blackish body spots that are weaker or absent in southern populations). Sexual dimorphism is weak: males grow larger and, when sexually active, may flush a faint bluish sheen; ripe females stay plainly silvery with a rounded belly.
Size is the headline trait. FishBase gives a maximum of about 10.2 in (10 in) TL; field workers (e.g. Konings, via tanganyika.si) report males to roughly 10.5 in and females usually to about 8.5 in. That makes Grammatotria by a clear margin the largest of Tanganyika's sand-sifting cichlids. The most common confusion is with Xenotilapia and Enantiopus, the other open-sand Ectodines that also forage in schools and take mouthfuls of substrate — but those are far smaller (typically 4-6 in / 4–6 in), lack Grammatotria's bulk, and do not carry the same heavy caudal-peduncle spot. Its sheer size and that tail blotch separate it at a glance.
Range & habitat
Grammatotria lemairii is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and is distributed lake-wide wherever suitable habitat occurs — recorded along the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Zambia and Burundi shores, and documented in GBIF fisheries datasets from both the northwestern (South Kivu, DRC) and southern reaches of the lake. FishBase places it across roughly 3°S to 9°S. Geographic variation is modest for such a wide range: the main reported cline is that northern males tend to show more blackish body spotting than southern fish, a point noted on Konings-sourced material at tanganyika.si.
The biotope is open, sediment-floored country, not reef. This is a fish of sandy and muddy flats and the sandy margins of rocky zones, favouring expansive bottoms with room to school and forage. Depth range runs from shallow water — around 16 ft (16 ft) — down to at least 245 ft (246 ft), and possibly deeper, making it one of the more depth-tolerant sand specialists. In-situ water chemistry is the stable, hard, alkaline regime of Tanganyika generally: FishBase records pH about 7.4-8.4, hardness roughly 7-30 dH, and temperatures around 73-81°F (73–81 °F). The lake's surface waters are famously buffered and oxygen-rich in the upper layers, while the deep water below the oxycline is anoxic — a constraint that matters for the conservation picture below.
Ecology & diet
Grammatotria is built around one trophic strategy taken to an extreme: industrial-scale sand sifting. It drives its pointed snout into the substrate, takes large mouthfuls of sand and mud, sorts the edible fraction internally, and expels the spent grit through the mouth and gill openings — the classic Ectodine winnowing behaviour, but executed by the biggest body in the guild. FishBase summarises it as 'probably carnivorous, feeding on mollusks and diatoms,' with a calculated trophic level of about 2.7; field accounts (Konings) broaden the menu to invertebrates generally — copepods, ostracods, insect larvae, small shrimps and clams — plus some algae and the occasional small fish. The Maréchal & Poll (1991) CLOFFA treatment and the older Poll literature underpin the molluscivore/invertivore characterisation.
Its ecological role is distinctive precisely because of its size. Where Xenotilapia and Enantiopus skim the top few millimetres of sand, Grammatotria's long snout lets it penetrate deeper into the substrate and reach prey unavailable to the smaller sifters — partitioning the same sand habitat by depth of excavation rather than by location. Outside breeding it forms large roving foraging schools over open bottoms, an aggregation that both improves foraging and dilutes predation risk in habitat with little cover. Within the Ectodini, it represents the 'ancestral' sand-flat niche from which relatives diverged into rock-grazing, plankton-picking and feather-fin display lineages; Grammatotria itself never made that leap and stayed a generalist benthic sifter.
Behaviour & breeding
Socially, Grammatotria is a schooling, comparatively peaceful fish for most of the year, only becoming territorial around spawning. It is a maternal (uniparental) mouthbrooder — FishBase notes that females brood the young in the mouth, with larvae up to about 0.5 in (0.5 in) TL carried by females around 6.5 in (6.5 in) SL. Unlike many sand-dwelling cichlids that build elaborate sand-crater or bower nests, displaying Grammatotria males do not construct a sand-scrape nest; instead a male defends a temporary, shifting territory, cuts a ripe female out of the passing school, and spawns directly on the open bottom.
The female then takes the eggs into her mouth and incubates eggs and larvae for roughly four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry; reported clutch size is on the order of 50 fry (Konings-sourced field data; corroborated in broad strokes by the Cichlid News husbandry account, Bjørneskov 2026). Aggression is best described as moderate and seasonal — peaceful in the school, more assertive when a male is holding territory and courting. Breeding triggers in captivity track the natural pattern: a mature group, a deep open sand bed, stable hard-alkaline water and good conditioning bring males into display. This maternal-mouthbrooding, no-bower mode is notable because much of the rest of the Ectodini went the other way, evolving biparental mouthbrooding and conspicuous sand nests — Grammatotria preserves the simpler ancestral system.
In the aquarium
Honestly, Grammatotria is an advanced, space-hungry fish that the hobby keeps rarely — and it is underrated mainly because it is plain. Its silvery coloration never competes with a Tropheus or a Cyathopharynx, so it is uncommon in shops, but keepers who try it describe an active, busy, behaviorally interesting schooler. The non-negotiable is footprint: this is a large (to ~10 in / 10 in), open-water sand-sifter, and tanganyika.si recommends a minimum of about 105 US gal (105 US gal), which should be treated as a floor, not a target — a long tank with a big open swimming lane matters far more than height, and a serious group really wants a 6 ft / 180+ gal footprint.
The single most important husbandry detail is substrate: a deep bed of fine sand is essential, because sifting is not optional enrichment for this fish, it is how the animal feeds and behaves. Gravel or bare bottoms are a mistake. Keep it as a pair or small group, in hard alkaline water (pH ~7.5-8.5, ~73-81°F / 73–81 °F), and do not house it with aggressive rock-dwellers; despite its size it is a peaceful schooler that gets bullied by boisterous tankmates. Diet should mirror the wild invertivore niche — a varied carnivore regimen of mysis, krill, shrimp and quality prepared foods. Like most Tanganyikans it needs pristine, well-oxygenated water and is sensitive to nitrate and to the bloat that follows overfeeding inappropriate (e.g. overly vegetable or low-quality) foods. Hybridisation worries are moot here — it is the only species in the genus, with no congeners to cross with — so the realistic warnings are simply tank size, substrate, and avoiding aggressive company. Verdict: not a beginner fish, but rewarding for an intermediate-to-advanced Tanganyikan keeper with the floor space.
Conservation
At the species level the news is reassuring: the IUCN Red List assesses Grammatotria lemairii as Least Concern (assessment current to the 2025-2 version), reflecting its lake-wide distribution, broad depth range and use of common, widespread sandy/muddy habitat. Because the genus is monotypic, there is no spread of categories to report — that single Least Concern rating is the whole story. The species is taken in artisanal and commercial fisheries (it appears in Lake Tanganyika fisheries datasets on GBIF) and enters the aquarium trade, but FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and its resilience as high, so targeted collection is not a primary concern.
The honest caveat is that a Least Concern species still lives in a strained lake. Lake Tanganyika has warmed measurably: O'Reilly et al. (2003, Nature) linked rising surface temperatures to reduced vertical mixing and an estimated ~20% decline in primary productivity, and Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) documented a roughly 38% loss of oxygenated benthic habitat as the anoxic deep water expands upward — directly squeezing the depth band that bottom-foragers like Grammatotria can use. Sedimentation from deforested catchments degrades littoral substrates, and the pelagic clupeid-and-Lates fishery that feeds four nations (DRC, Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi) keeps heavy pressure on the lake's food web; basin-wide governance runs through the Lake Tanganyika Authority under the 2003 Convention. None of this currently threatens Grammatotria specifically — but a sand-sifter that already ranges into deep water has a real stake in how far the oxygenated benthos keeps shrinking. The accurate summary: the species is fine today; the lake it depends on is under measurable, well-documented stress.
