Taxonomy & the radiation
Lestradea was erected by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1943, in his paper on new fishes of Lake Tanganyika in the Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines, with Lestradea perspicax as the type species (type locality near Rumonge, Burundi). The genus name has a tangled etymology: FishBase offers a Greek reading from lestris ('bandit'), but the more authoritative Eponym Dictionary of Fishes treats it as an eponym honoring Arthur Lestrade (1897–1990), a Belgian ethnographer and colonial administrator in Rwanda. In the same era Poll also described the southern form as Ophthalmotilapia stappersii, later recombined into Lestradea as L. stappersii (Poll, 1943); FishBase recognizes both L. perspicax and L. stappersii as valid species, while Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (following Konings 2015, 2019) treats stappersii as a junior synonym of perspicax — so whether the genus is monotypic or holds two species is currently unsettled.
The genus sits in subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, tribe Ectodini — the lake's most ecomorphologically diverse tribe, spanning sand-, mud-, and rock-dwelling lineages with both biparental and maternal mouthbrooding (the framework laid out by Koblmüller et al., 2004, in their mitochondrial study of the sand-dwelling lineage). Within Ectodini, Lestradea is closest to Ectodus, with which it shares body plan and bower-building habits; the two likely derive from a shared sand-dwelling ancestor, and the molecular work confirms a benthic, sand-dwelling lifestyle as ancestral for the group. Lestradea is one of the genus-level building blocks of Tanganyika's roughly 240-species cichlid flock — the lake holding around 208 valid described species in the inventory of Ronco et al. (2020, Journal of Great Lakes Research). The genus has stayed small and taxonomically stable since Poll's day, in sharp contrast to the lake's much-revised Lamprologus/Neolamprologus/Lepidiolamprologus complex; the only real instability has been the historical back-and-forth over whether perspicax and stappersii are one species or two.
Defining features
Lestradea are slender, fusiform, fairly small cichlids built for life over open sand. The shared look is silvery and reflective — a sandy-bottom camouflage — with breeding males developing a blue body and dorsal fin, a dark throat, and yellow pelvic fins, while females and non-breeding males stay plain silver with only the upper half of the iris flushed yellow (as documented for L. perspicax on tanganyika.si). The two species are close in form but differ in size: L. perspicax is the larger, reaching about 5.4 in (5.5 in TL) per FishBase, with lake males around 4.7 in (4.5 in) and captive males occasionally to 5.5 in (5.5 in); L. stappersii is smaller, maxing out near 4.6 in (4.5 in TL).
Against look-alike ectodine sand-sifters, the key contrast is with Ectodus (which carries a distinctive dark dorsal-fin blotch and a deeper body) and with the Xenotilapia genera (generally smaller, often biparental mouthbrooders with different finnage). Lestradea's combination of a plain reflective body, a subterminal sand-grubbing mouth, a high-bodied bower-building male, and its maternal mouthbrooding separates it from those neighbors. Field workers and divers note that the genus's silvery sheen and rapid sand-diving escape are as diagnostic in situ as any meristic count.
Range & habitat
The genus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and, between its two species, occurs essentially lake-wide — but the species partition the range. L. perspicax holds the northern basin (FishBase records it from roughly 3°N to 6°S, the northern part of the lake including Burundi and the northern DR Congo and Tanzanian shores), while L. stappersii is the southern endemic, found south of the Toa Islands into Zambian and southern Tanzanian/Congolese waters. This north–south, largely allopatric split is one of the cleaner geographic replacements among Tanganyikan sand cichlids.
The biotope is open sand. Lestradea are sand-floor specialists, recorded from shallow beaches down into deeper sandy zones — roughly 16–246 ft (about 16–246 ft) for L. perspicax — and they aggregate over those flats as semi-pelagic roamers rather than hugging rock. The two species also stratify by depth: FishBase explicitly notes L. stappersii is 'encountered at greater depths than Lestradea perspicax,' so the southern form tends to sit deeper on the sand. As Tanganyika water, their habitat is alkaline and hard, with surface temperatures around 75–81°F (75–81 °F), a stable pH near 8.6–9.0, and high conductivity — the well-mixed, high-mineral chemistry typical of the lake's littoral and sub-littoral sand.
Ecology & diet
The genus is built around microphagy on sand. Both species feed on microorganisms and very fine particles, and stomach-content work summarized for L. perspicax shows mostly sand grains mixed with diatoms, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), and bacteria — the fish takes in mouthfuls of the thin organic film and ooze that settle into pockets on the sand and sorts the edible fraction. FishBase describes L. stappersii in nearly identical terms, feeding on microorganisms and small particles 'from the ooze that accumulates in small pockets on the sand floor.' Estimated trophic levels are low-to-mid, around 3.4 for L. perspicax and 3.5 for L. stappersii, consistent with a grazer-detritivore rather than a predator.
This is worth stating plainly because it corrects a common online error: some hobby posts label L. stappersii a 'scale biter.' That is wrong — scale- and fin-biting in Tanganyika belongs to Perissodus and Plecodus (tribe Perissodini), not to Lestradea. Both Lestradea are peaceful sand microphages. The main divergence between the two species is spatial and depth-related niche partitioning rather than diet: perspicax works shallower sand, stappersii deeper sand, reducing direct competition. Ecologically the genus fills the role of a shoaling sand-sifter on the lake's sediment flats — turning over the substrate, feeding low on the food web, and serving as forage for the lake's larger sand-zone predators.
Behaviour & breeding
Lestradea are social, shoaling fish in nature — observers describe loose aggregations over sand rather than solitary territories outside of breeding. Temperament is peaceful to only moderately aggressive, with what aggression exists tied to breeding and bower defense. The signature anti-predator behavior is dramatic: a startled Lestradea can plunge into open sand and bury itself entirely for several minutes until a threat (or a beach seine) passes, an escape tactic that, combined with its reflective camouflage, makes it hard to single out on the flats.
Reproduction across the genus is maternal mouthbrooding over a constructed sand bower. Males scrape large circular sand structures — a raised wall around a shallow central crater, often roughly 16–20 in (15.5–19.5 in) across — and spawning happens in the center of the crater: eggs are laid and fertilized on the sand, then the female gathers them into her mouth. FishBase's reproduction record for L. perspicax (drawing on Kuwamura, 1986) documents external fertilization and female mouthbrooding, with larvae up to about 0.5 in (0.5 in) carried by females as small as 2.5 in (2.5 in SL). Captive broods of L. perspicax run roughly 60–70 fry; importantly, once the female releases the brood after the holding period, the fry are not taken back up — there is no extended post-release guarding, which is typical of these open-sand ectodine mouthbrooders.
In the aquarium
Honestly, Lestradea is a niche, infrequently traded fish rather than a hobby staple — you will find far more written about Xenotilapia or Cyathopharynx than about either Lestradea, and dedicated keeping threads are thin. That scarcity is itself the headline: most aquarists will only encounter the genus through specialist Tanganyika importers. When it does appear, L. perspicax is the species in trade; L. stappersii is rarely exported.
Kept well, this is a rewarding, peaceful sand cichlid for a dedicated Tanganyika setup — but it has real requirements. Give it a long tank: tanganyika.si recommends a footprint around 50 in (49 in) of length and at least ~40 gal (40 US gal) for its constant active swimming, and a serious group is better served by 75 gallons or more. A deep bed of fine, soft sand is non-negotiable — it is the fish's feeding substrate, bower material, and refuge; coarse gravel defeats all three. Keep it as a shoal of at least six, because lone or paired specimens are skittish and show poorly. Tankmates should be calm: pair it with other open-water or sand Tanganyikans and avoid boisterous, rock-territorial cichlids that will bully a fish whose instinct is to flee into the substrate. Common mistakes are predictable: too small or too short a tank, a gravel bottom, keeping too few, and housing it with aggressive mbuna-style cichlids. Diet should be a quality, lower-protein menu of small foods (cyclops, fine flake, spirulina) reflecting its microphagous biology — overfeeding rich, meaty foods invites the digestive problems (the Tanganyika/Tropheus-style 'bloat' that plagues herbivore-leaning rift cichlids). It is best considered an intermediate fish: not finicky to feed, but demanding on tank size, sand, and group size in a way beginners often underestimate. One genuine caution for breeders — don't expect the female to shepherd free-swimming fry; plan to manage them yourself once released.
Conservation
Both species are endemic to Lake Tanganyika, and both are currently assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern — L. perspicax reassessed as LC on 28 February 2025, and L. stappersii listed LC from a 2006 assessment. The genus is not a targeted fishery resource: Ad Konings notes (via the Cichlid Room Companion) that L. perspicax remains very common in shallow sandy habitats and is largely spared by traditional beach seines because it is small enough to slip through the mesh — and can dive into the sand to let a net pass. He flags a newer pressure, though: the increasing use of fine mosquito netting, which catches small fish that regulatory mesh would release. So the genus-level picture is genuinely reassuring at the species level — neither is threatened, and collection/trade pressure is light because it is a minor aquarium and bycatch fish, not a food target.
That said, the species rest on a lake under strain, and a sand-floor microphage is exposed to exactly the changes underway. O'Reilly et al. (2003, Nature) documented that climate warming has strengthened stratification and cut primary productivity by an estimated ~20%, thinning the microbial and algal base that Lestradea grazes. Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) showed warming has reduced fish production and, through deoxygenation of deeper water, shrunk oxygenated benthic habitat by roughly 38% — a direct concern for a genus whose deeper-living member (L. stappersii) inhabits the sub-littoral sand. Sedimentation from deforested watersheds also degrades littoral substrate. The lake's main fishery targets the pelagic clupeids and Lates that feed four nations (Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania, Zambia), with shared management coordinated through the Lake Tanganyika Authority. The accurate summary: Lestradea is not in trouble today, but the habitat that sustains it is being quietly eroded by warming, reduced mixing, and sedimentation.
