Taxonomy & the radiation
Spathodus was erected by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1900, alongside its type species, Spathodus erythrodon. The name is straightforward zoology-Greek: spathe, a blade or sword, plus odous, tooth — a 'blade-tooth,' after the long, spatulate-to-cylindrical jaw teeth Boulenger used to separate it from the closely similar Eretmodus he had named two years earlier (1898). The genus sits in the tribe Eretmodini, a small, exclusively Tanganyikan clade of the African cichlid subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, and is one of three nominal genera in that tribe: Eretmodus (Boulenger 1898), Spathodus (Boulenger 1900), and Tanganicodus (Poll 1950). Hobbyists lump all of them as 'goby cichlids' or 'Tanganyika clowns.'
The genus contains just two described species. Spathodus erythrodon Boulenger, 1900 is the type; Spathodus marlieri was added by Max Poll in 1950 and honours G. Marlier. Both names are accepted by the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase, and several locality forms (e.g. an undescribed 'erythrodon north' around Kigoma) circulate in the hobby without formal status.
The live taxonomic story is whether Spathodus is real. The three eretmodine genera were diagnosed almost entirely on tooth shape — cylindrical in Spathodus, broad and spatulate in Eretmodus, slender and pointed in Tanganicodus. Rüber, Verheyen & Meyer's mitochondrial phylogeography (1999, PNAS 96:10230–10235) found that these tooth-shape classes are not each monophyletic: a given dentition type appears in several independent genetic lineages with complementary geographic distributions, implying the trophic morphologies evolved repeatedly as the lake's level rose and fell and populations re-colonised shorelines. In other words, the characters that define the genera do not track ancestry. Specialist writers have drawn the obvious conclusion: Konings and others note it is 'just a matter of time' before the tribe is collapsed into a single genus, which by priority would be Eretmodus. Spathodus is retained here because Catalog of Fishes and FishBase still list it, but a serious keeper should understand the name labels a tooth type more reliably than a branch of the tree.
Defining features
Spathodus shares the whole eretmodine bauplan: a small, stout, blunt-headed cichlid with thick lips (often electric blue), a long-based dorsal fin, and — the key adaptation — a reduced, partly deflated swim bladder. With little buoyancy these fish cannot hover; they rest on and 'hop' between rocks in a comical, gobylike gait that, with the blue lips, earns the 'clown' nickname. That negative buoyancy is itself an adaptation to the genus's habitat, the turbulent surf zone, where too much lift would simply tumble a fish in the swell.
Within that shared body plan, the genus is defined by its dentition: long, cylindrical oral teeth, intermediate between the broad spatulate teeth of Eretmodus and the slender pointed teeth of Tanganicodus. Externally Spathodus erythrodon is so close to Eretmodus cyanostictus that the two can be told apart with confidence only on the teeth — erythrodon tends to lack the bold vertical body bars typical of Eretmodus and shows a narrower, more elongate snout. The second species, S. marlieri, is the visual outlier and the genus's size record: it is the largest of all goby cichlids, with dominant males reaching about 4 in (4 in) total length and developing a distinct nuchal (cephalic) hump, while females stay much smaller, around 2.4 in (2.5 in). Its body is plain brown-to-beige with only a few blue spots concentrated on the head, no orange dot, and no strong vertical bars. S. erythrodon is the smaller, more typical clown, maturing around 3.3 in (3.5 in) TL (FishBase; Aqualog). Look-alike traps for the keeper are the other two goby genera and bar-flanked Eretmodus — separation in life comes down to tooth form, snout shape, and (for marlieri) the hump and muted coloration.
Range & habitat
The genus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and found nowhere else on Earth — both species are confined to the lake's littoral fringe, and neither enters rivers. Distribution differs sharply between them. Spathodus erythrodon is widespread, recorded along most of the lake's rocky coastline except the extreme southern end; FishBase notes it is mostly seen in less than a foot of water at the very edge of the pebble or rubble shoreline. Spathodus marlieri is far more restricted, known only from the northern third of the lake — reported from north of Kigoma, from Burundi, and from Uvira in the DR Congo, which is the type locality — and is the least abundant of all the goby cichlids; its extreme shyness means its true range may be slightly under-recorded (tanganyika.si).
The biotope is unambiguous: the uppermost rocky littoral, the wave-battered band from the waterline down to roughly 3 ft (3 ft). FishBase gives erythrodon a depth range to about 3 ft; the genus is essentially a creature of the surge zone, where meter-high storm waves are routine and even calm days carry a swell. The body shape, long dorsal fin and reduced swim bladder are all read as adaptations to holding station in this turbulence. In-situ chemistry is simply that of Tanganyika's surface water: hard and alkaline, with FishBase logging pH 7.2–8.5 and roughly 10–20 dH for erythrodon at temperatures of about 77–81 °F (77–81 °F). These are oxygen-rich, sunlit, mineral-laden shallows — the narrow benthic band that also happens to be the lake habitat most exposed to modern pressures.
Ecology & diet
Spathodus is built around aufwuchs grazing — the genus makes its living scraping and picking the 'biocover,' the felt of filamentous algae, diatoms, micro-invertebrates and detritus that coats the rocks of the surf zone. This is the same broad guild as Tropheus and Petrochromis, but the goby cichlids exploit a far shallower, rougher slice of it. The genus's cylindrical teeth give it a feeding mode intermediate between its relatives: Eretmodus, with broad spatulate teeth, is the most committed algae-comber, while Tanganicodus, with fine pointed teeth, leans toward picking small invertebrates; Spathodus sits between, taking both algae and the invertebrate fauna living within the aufwuchs. This trophic partitioning is exactly what lets up to three or four eretmodine species coexist on the same stretch of rock without direct competition — a textbook case of resource division by mouth morphology (Rüber, Verheyen & Meyer 1999).
The two species diverge in detail. S. erythrodon is the classic surf-zone biocover grazer, picking microorganisms from the rock (FishBase Ref. 6770; trophic level ~3.4). S. marlieri is described as a more omnivorous aufwuchs feeder whose mouth width and strategy sit between the algae-specialist Eretmodus and the invertebrate-oriented Tanganicodus, and it is behaviourally unusual in not requiring constant substrate contact — it is sometimes seen swimming up and away from the rocks, more than other gobies (tanganyika.si). Within the community, Spathodus is a small, low-mobility benthic grazer of the shallowest reef — neither piscivore, scale-biter, sand-sifter nor planktivore — a role it shares and finely subdivides with its two sister genera.
Behaviour & breeding
Goby cichlids are intensely territorial for their size, and Spathodus is no exception — conspecific aggression is the defining behavioural trait, and male S. marlieri in particular are described as becoming outright tyrants. In the wild they live singly or in pairs along the rocks, each defending a patch of feeding territory. The headline behaviour, though, is the breeding mode. Most eretmodines are biparental mouthbrooders with a lasting pair bond — a mode genuinely rare among the maternal, non-pairing mouthbrooders that dominate the African Rift Lakes. The female cleans a flat rock, the male fertilises, the female collects the large eggs (only ~30, but big) into her mouth, broods for roughly 10–12 days, then transfers the clutch to the male, who completes brooding for a further week or more. Pair-bond studies in the closely related Eretmodus cyanostictus (Taylor, Morley, Rico & Balshine 2003; Grüter & Taborsky 2003) found genetic monogamy and female-biased dispersal, with both sexes effectively constrained to the pair bond.
Spathodus splits on this point, and that is what makes the genus interesting behaviourally. S. erythrodon follows the typical eretmodine pattern — FishBase records the female as the initial mouthbrooder with the male taking over the young soon after release. S. marlieri, by contrast, is reported to practise essentially maternal-only mouthbrooding: the female carries the eggs and fry for about three weeks and the male only rarely takes a turn (Aqualog; tanganyika.si; cichlid-forum.com). It also shows the genus's strongest sexual dimorphism — the male's nuchal hump and larger size. Breeding triggers are unremarkable Tanganyikan staples (stable warm hard water, good current, secure flat spawning rock), but the practical bottleneck is the same across the genus: sexes are hard to distinguish, yet conspecific aggression makes group-keeping while pairs sort themselves out genuinely risky.
In the aquarium
Spathodus are charming, characterful, surprisingly demanding little fish — not the beginner Tanganyikans their size suggests. Despite topping out near 3–4 in (3–4 in), they need more room than newcomers expect: a 35 in / 35.5 in tank (around 30 gal) is a sensible floor for goby cichlids generally, and tanganyika.si recommends at least 80 US gal for a single S. marlieri pair, with 130 US gal or more if you want to keep several. The reason is temperament: intraspecific aggression is severe, and an underbudgeted tank ends with one survivor. The standard route is to buy a group of six or more juveniles, let a pair form, and then remove the rest — but be ready to act, because once a pair bonds they will not tolerate other Spathodus.
Setup should copy the surf zone: a hard, alkaline, well-buffered tank around 77–81 °F (77–81 °F), heavy oxygenation and strong current, fine sand, and abundant rockwork with many caves and line-of-sight breaks. Diet must be high in vegetable matter (spirulina-based foods, algae) with some small live or frozen invertebrates — and here is the classic killer: like Tropheus and other Tanganyikan grazers, gobies are prone to 'bloat' (Malawi/African bloat) when fed too much protein or kept in poor water, so resist the temptation to power-feed beefheart or excess flake. Compatibility-wise they do best with other shallow-rock Tanganyikans that won't outcompete them at feeding — small lamprologines (Julidochromis, Neolamprologus), and open-water Cyprichromis or Benthochromis as dither. The serious caution is hybridisation: the goby genera and their many locality forms interbreed readily, so never mix Spathodus species, Eretmodus, and Tanganicodus, or different geographic variants, in one tank if you care about genetic integrity. Honest verdict: beautiful, behaviourally rewarding, and breedable, but an intermediate-to-advanced fish — the demands are flow, water quality, a careful diet, and respect for their aggression, not gallons of livestock.
Conservation
Both Spathodus species are endemic to Lake Tanganyika and both are currently assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern (assessed 2006), reflecting the genus's wide use in fisheries and aquaria and, for erythrodon, a broad lake-wide range. There is no evidence the aquarium trade itself threatens either species — S. erythrodon is a common, fast-reproducing surf-zone fish, and S. marlieri, while naturally scarce and localised to the northern lake, is not under documented collection pressure. So the honest genus-level summary is: the species look secure on paper, but they live in exactly the habitat most exposed to the lake's slow decline.
That decline is well documented. Climatic warming and reduced vertical mixing have cut Tanganyika's primary productivity by roughly 20% over the late twentieth century (O'Reilly et al. 2003, Nature), and warming has driven an estimated ~38% loss of the oxygenated benthic habitat usable by bottom-dwelling fishes (Cohen et al. 2016, PNAS). For a genus that lives in the top metre of rocky shoreline, the more immediate threat is sedimentation: deforestation and erosion in the catchment smother the rocky littoral in silt, degrading exactly the wave-washed biocover Spathodus grazes. These nearshore pressures, plus pollution near growing lakeshore towns, are the realistic concerns — not the targeted clupeid-and-Lates pelagic fishery that feeds the four basin nations (Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania, Zambia), which operates offshore and does not touch goby habitat. Transboundary management falls to the Lake Tanganyika Authority under the 2003 Convention. The accurate statement, then, is the careful one: Spathodus is Least Concern today, but it is a shallow-rock specialist with a small range (catastrophically so for marlieri), and its fate is tied to whether the lake's stressed littoral zone is protected — a 'fine for now, watch the habitat' picture rather than a crisis.
