Taxonomy & the radiation
The genus Triglachromis was erected in 1974 by the Belgian ichthyologists Max Poll and Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde. The species itself is older: Charles Tate Regan described it in 1920 as Limnochromis otostigma, from Lake Tanganyika material. That original name — Limnochromis otostigma Regan, 1920 — remains the basionym and is the type species of the genus by original designation; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as 'Type by original designation (also monotypic),' a status echoed by FishBase and GBIF.
The name is a small joke of comparative anatomy. "Triglachromis" fuses Trigla — the genus of the gurnards or sea-robins, fishes famous for the detached, finger-like lower pectoral rays they walk and taste with — to the cichlid suffix -chromis. As The ETYFish Project spells out, the name refers to the finger-like extensions of the pectoral fins, 'similar to the three anterior rays of the pectoral fins of gurnards.' Poll and Thys split otostigma out of Limnochromis precisely on that feature, and the fish has stayed monotypic ever since: Triglachromis contains exactly one valid species, a point on which FishBase, the Cichlid Room Companion, and Catalog of Fishes all agree. (The species epithet otostigma — Greek for 'ear-spot' — points to a separate feature, the dark blue-black blotch on the gill cover.)
Within Tanganyika's species flock, Triglachromis sits in the tribe Limnochromini, a small assemblage of benthic, mostly deepwater biparental mouthbrooders that also includes Limnochromis, Reganochromis, Tangachromis, Baileychromis, Greenwoodochromis and (in part) Gnathochromis. Duftner et al. (2005, Journal of Molecular Evolution), the first molecular study to target this tribe directly, analysed two mitochondrial genes and treated the Limnochromini as a coherent deepwater group of bi-parental mouthbrooders while finding some intergeneric relationships at odds with the morphology-based classification — a reminder that the tribe's internal arrangement is still being worked out, as the recent Zootaxa revision of Gnathochromis underscores.
Defining features
Triglachromis is a medium-small, elongate cichlid with a relatively broad, rounded head and a low, sub-terminal mouth set for working the bottom. Live colour is brownish to coppery, overlaid with slightly oblique rows of narrow, metallic blue-to-pearl scales, with a grey-brown dorsal fin and bluish lower fins, and a dark blue-black spot on the operculum.
Two features separate it cleanly from its closest look-alikes. First, where the genus is most often confused with Limnochromis — into which otostigma was originally lumped — Triglachromis is told apart by its elongate body, rounded head and sub-terminal mouth. Second, and the genus's signature, the lower rays of the pectoral fins bear finger-like extensions that can be trailed through the mud as tactile feelers; tanganyika.si singles these out as sensory organs used to detect prey in the substrate, and they are the literal basis of the gurnard analogy. Size is modest for a Tanganyikan: wild fish run to about 4 in (4 in), with well-fed aquarium specimens reaching 5 in (4.5–5 in); FishBase lists a maximum of 4.5 in TL. There is little sexual dimorphism — aquarium observers report only that females may carry black pigment on the first dorsal-fin rays and tend to run slightly smaller than males.
Range & habitat
Triglachromis otostigma is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and, unusually for a lake cichlid, is found all around its shoreline — wherever the right bottom exists, with no known geographical variation across the lake. That bottom is the key: this is a mud and silt specialist, tied to soft, fine sediments over which it digs extensive tunnel systems and underground galleries (tanganyika.si). It is essentially absent from the clean rocky reefs and sand slopes that define the more familiar mbuna-analogue niches, which is one reason it is comparatively seldom seen by divers and collectors despite a lake-wide range.
FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic and a 'typical mud-dweller which inhabits shallow and deep waters of coastal areas'; aquarium-trade locality variants such as 'Cape Kachese' and 'Chituta Bay' (Zambia, southern lake) confirm that the species turns up across widely separated basins without obvious geographic differentiation. In-situ chemistry is the standard Tanganyika rift-lake signature — hard, strongly alkaline water; FishBase records a pH range of about 8.5–9.0, dGH around 10–15, and temperatures of roughly 75–79°F (75–79 °F), consistent with the lake's stable, well-buffered surface layer.
Ecology & diet
The genus is built around a single, tightly defined trophic strategy: it is a benthic sediment-sifter that mines soft mud for small prey. Triglachromis engulfs mouthfuls of substrate, retains the edible fraction — small invertebrates extracted from the mud and silt, along with diatoms and micro-organisms — and expels the rest, frequently swallowing a good deal of mud as ballast in the process (tanganyika.si; FishBase, which records that it 'feeds on diatoms and microorganisms but [is] also omnivorous'). FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.7, squarely in the low-end omnivore/detritivore band rather than among predators. The finger-like extensions on the lower pectoral rays are the working end of this niche, letting the fish feel for buried prey the way a gurnard does on a marine sand flat — a rare case of a cichlid converging on a sensory trick of an unrelated marine lineage.
Because Triglachromis is monotypic there is no within-genus divergence in diet to report — the radiation is, in effect, a single experiment in mud-mining. Its role in the community is best understood by contrast with its tribe-mates: the Limnochromini as a whole exploit the lake's soft-bottom and deeper zones that the rock-grazing tribes ignore, and within that guild Triglachromis takes the muddy littoral. The tunnel-building habit also makes the fish a minor bioturbator, reworking and aerating fine sediment, a function easy to overlook in a lake usually discussed in terms of its glamorous rock cichlids.
Behaviour & breeding
Socially, Triglachromis is one of the more even-tempered Tanganyikans. tanganyika.si describes it as relatively peaceful compared with other limnochromines, becoming territorial mainly around its burrow and breeding site rather than holding the kind of large, aggressively defended reef territory typical of many Tropheus or lamprologines. In the wild and in tanks it is often kept in groups, pairing off to breed.
Reproductively it follows the tribal pattern that defines the Limnochromini: it is a biparental (bi-parental) mouthbrooder, a mode comparatively rare among cichlids and quite distinct from both the maternal-only mouthbrooding of most Tanganyikan and Malawian open-water cichlids and the substrate/cave spawning of the lamprologines. A pair digs extensive tunnel systems in the soft substrate and spawns inside; both parents then incubate the brood orally and — a striking behaviour documented for the species — regularly exchange the eggs, larvae and fry between their mouths, sharing the brooding load. Reported clutch sizes are large for the fish's size, on the order of 250–300 eggs (tanganyika.si). FishBase's life-history modelling estimates a generation time of about 1.5 years and high resilience, consistent with a fish that spawns readily when its specialised nest requirements are met.
In the aquarium
Triglachromis otostigma is in the hobby — FishBase flags it as commercial in the aquarium trade and tanganyika.si lists it across multiple keepers' collections — but it is a niche, slightly advanced fish, not a beginner Tanganyikan. The honest appeal is behavioural rather than chromatic: it is a coppery, subtly iridescent fish whose draw is watching it tunnel, feel through the substrate, and brood biparentally, not a flashy showpiece. tanganyika.si recommends an aquarium of 55 US gal or larger, and the non-negotiable is a deep bed of fine sand the fish can actually dig, ideally with a layout that allows it to build tunnels. Keepers report success substituting PVC pipes and elbows for the natural mud galleries — the species will adopt tubular caves readily — and the recurring frustration, voiced on hobby accounts such as The Cichlid Stage, is reproducing the right mud/silt composition; fine sand plus tubes is the pragmatic workaround.
Water should be the standard Tanganyikan setup: hard, alkaline (pH ~8.5–9.0), well-filtered and well-oxygenated, around 75–79°F (75–79 °F). FishBase calls it 'a good community tank fish provided that its companions are of comparable size' — it is peaceful enough to be bullied by boisterous Tropheus or large lamprologines, yet territorial enough around its burrow to need its own floor space. The genuine mistakes keepers make are setup mistakes: a bare or coarse-gravel bottom that denies the fish its core digging behaviour, tankmates that out-compete a deliberate, bottom-grazing feeder, and, as with all rift-lake cichlids, the diet-and-water-quality errors that drive 'bloat' — overfeeding protein-heavy or mammalian foods to a low-trophic-level sifter invites trouble. There is no congener to hybridise with, which removes one common Tanganyikan pitfall, but the flip side is that there is relatively little hobbyist literature, so new keepers lean heavily on a handful of sources such as Ad Konings' 'Tanganyika Cichlids in their Natural Environment.'
Conservation
At the species level the status is reassuring on paper: the IUCN Red List assesses Triglachromis otostigma as Least Concern (assessed 3 March 2025, carrying forward an earlier Least Concern listing from 2006), noting that it is widely distributed throughout Lake Tanganyika with no known major widespread threats; its population trend is recorded as unknown. As a monotypic genus, that single assessment is the whole genus-level picture — there is no spread of categories to report, and the lake-wide muddy-bottom range gives the fish a buffer that narrowly endemic rock specialists lack. Direct trade pressure is light: it is collected for the aquarium hobby in modest numbers and carries low fishing vulnerability in FishBase's modelling.
The honest caveat is that the fish is only as secure as its lake, and Lake Tanganyika is under real strain. Long-term warming has strengthened density stratification and reduced the deep mixing that fertilises the surface, with O'Reilly et al. (2003, Nature) estimating roughly a 20% decline in primary productivity over the late 20th century; Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) document that reduced mixing has 'shrunk the oxygenated benthic habitat by 38%' in their study areas as the oxic layer shoals — a change that bears directly on soft-bottom, sediment-associated fishes like this one. Sedimentation from catchment deforestation degrades littoral habitat, and the pelagic fishery that feeds four nations adds ecosystem-wide pressure. None of this currently threatens Triglachromis specifically — it remains Least Concern and widely distributed — but a mud-dwelling, oxygen-dependent benthic specialist is exactly the kind of fish whose fortunes track the health of the lake floor, which is the part of Tanganyika changing fastest.
