Taxonomy & naming
Herre described the species in 1940 from the New Territories, Hong Kong, and Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid in Sineleotris, a genus of Chinese sleeper gudgeons in the family Odontobutidae. A store listing spells the epithet as saccaharae; the correct spelling is saccharae.
Morphology
FishBase gives a maximum length of 4 in SL. Like other odontobutids it is a stout-bodied sleeper with separate pelvic fins, not the fused sucker disc of true gobies. The atlas holds no colour description.
Habitat
FishBase classes it as a freshwater, bottom-dwelling fish of a subtropical region and records it from Hong Kong. Streams in the New Territories, the type area, are the known habitat. FishBase gives no temperature, pH or hardness range.
Feeding
Diet is not recorded. Sleepers of this family are ambush predators that take small fishes and invertebrates, and an aquarist would offer live and frozen foods.
Mating
Courtship and mating are not described.
Breeding
No breeding information is recorded for this species.
In the aquarium
It is a rare fish in the trade, known to the atlas from the Wet Spot stock list. A cool-to-subtropical, rocky stream tank with hiding places suits a bottom-dwelling sleeper this size. Keep it away from tankmates small enough to swallow.
Conservation
No IUCN assessment is known to the atlas. The recorded range is Hong Kong, so habitat change in the New Territories is the relevant concern.
