About the genus

Haludaria is a small genus of barbs (family Cyprinidae) endemic to India, split off in recent taxonomic revisions from the old, sprawling Puntius grouping of South Asian barbs. The atlas covers 4 species, from about 3 in, found in streams and hill-country waters typical of peninsular Indian freshwater habitats. As with many barbs recently carved out of Puntius, the genus is defined largely by fine anatomical and genetic characters rather than an obvious shared body plan visible at a glance, so identification between close relatives can be difficult without careful comparison.

The genus is known in the hobby mainly through Haludaria fasciata, the melon barb, a small, banded, active schooling fish that has circulated in the aquarium trade under various older names as barb taxonomy has been reshuffled; it does well in a planted community tank kept in a lively group. The rest of the genus is seen rarely if at all outside its native range and is mostly of interest to barb specialists and regional ichthyologists. Conservation status is mixed and worth attention: the atlas tally includes one Endangered species alongside two Least Concern and one Data Deficient, a reminder that India's endemic hill-stream barbs face real pressure from habitat loss even where a genus overall looks secure.
