Hemibrycon is a genus of small to medium characins in the tetra group, native to the fast, cool streams that drain the Andes and adjoining lowlands of northern South America and Central America. The atlas covers 38 species, with adult sizes ranging from about 1 in up to a much larger 6.5 in depending on the species, and records reaching from Colombia and Ecuador south through Peru and Bolivia, with additional country records in Brazil, Panama, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Like most tetras they carry the compact, laterally compressed body and forked tail built for maneuvering in current, and many species share a silvery flank often set off with a dark lateral band or spot near the caudal peduncle — a family resemblance that has made the genus a persistent taxonomic puzzle, with species boundaries historically drawn on subtle differences in scale counts and fin-ray structure.
Hemibrycon is a genus mostly known to ichthyologists and dedicated Andean-stream aquarists rather than the mainstream trade; only a handful of species, such as Hemibrycon polyodon (the sardina) and the aptly named Hemibrycon tridens, the jumping tetra — a nod to the strong leaping ability many stream-dwelling characins share — turn up with any regularity in specialist collections. Because these fish evolved in cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water, they generally do poorly in the warm, still conditions of a typical community tank and are better suited to a river-tank setup with strong flow and lower temperatures. Conservation data in the atlas is thin for most species — a large share are Data Deficient or not yet formally evaluated — which is typical of small characins confined to narrow highland drainages that are hard to survey.
