Heterocheirodon is a small genus of characins native to the subtropical river systems of southern Brazil and Argentina. Its two species are tiny tetras, only around 1.5 in long, part of the broader group of small, silvery 'cheirodontin' characins that fill streams and coastal drainages across southern South America. Heterocheirodon jacuiensis and Heterocheirodon yatai fit the general body plan shared by this group: a compressed, schooling fish adapted to slow-flowing subtropical waters rather than fast highland streams.
Neither species has an established presence in the aquarium trade, and detailed behavioral or husbandry data for the genus are sparse outside the taxonomic literature that first described them. Both Heterocheirodon jacuiensis and Heterocheirodon yatai are currently assessed Least Concern, consistent with their occurrence across a reasonably broad span of subtropical drainages in southern Brazil and Argentina rather than a single narrow locality.
