About the genus

Homaloptera is a genus of hillstream loaches in the family Balitoridae, native to fast, well-oxygenated mountain and foothill streams across a broad swath of Asia; the atlas records species from Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, China, India, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The atlas covers 9 species, from about 2.5 in to 5.5 in, and the genus shows the classic hillstream body plan: a flattened head and body, broadly spread paired fins, and an underside built to grip smooth rock in strong current rather than swim freely through open water.

In the aquarium hobby these are specialist fish for high-flow, well-oxygenated setups, often biotope tanks built around powerheads and rounded river stones, where they graze algae and biofilm off hard surfaces and generally do best alongside other current-loving fish rather than typical community species. Homaloptera ocellata (spotted lizard hillstream loach) and H. orthogoniata (Borneo hillstream loach) are among the more recognizable names reaching keepers. Conservation assessment for the genus is thin: seven of the nine species are Not Evaluated, with just one Least Concern and one Vulnerable, a common situation for small, fast-water fish across much of tropical Asia that have not yet been formally reviewed.
