Hypergastromyzon is a small genus of hillstream loaches (family Gastromyzontidae) from Southeast Asia, recorded in the atlas from Indonesia, China and Malaysia. As with other hillstream loaches, the body is flattened and the paired fins are broadened and modified into a sucker-like disc, letting the fish grip rock in fast, highly oxygenated current rather than being swept downstream. The atlas covers 4 species, small-bodied at roughly 1.5–2.5 in, consistent with the genus's life on the streambed of clear hill and montane watercourses.
Hypergastromyzon has little to no established presence in the aquarium hobby; Hypergastromyzon humilis is the only species with a widely used common name in the atlas, the humilis Bonero hillstream loach, and the genus as a whole is mostly of interest to hillstream-loach specialists and regional surveys rather than the general trade. Any fish from this genus that does appear in the hobby would need the same specialist setup as other rheophilic loaches — cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a hard substrate — since they have little tolerance for stagnant or warm conditions. Conservation data are limited: the atlas tally runs two Not Evaluated, one Near Threatened and one Data Deficient, so formal risk assessments across the genus remain incomplete.
