Hypobrycon is a small genus of characid tetras native to South America, recorded from Brazil and Argentina in the atlas. Both described species top out around 2 in, placing the genus among the diminutive end of the characid family - small, schooling, freshwater fish built like classic tetras, with a laterally compressed body, forked tail, and the small adipose fin typical of most characiforms. As with many small-bodied Neotropical characids described in recent decades, detailed accounts of Hypobrycon's habitat preferences and life history are sparse in the literature, though what is documented points to the clear-water stream habitat typical of the group.
Neither species carries a common name in wide use, and Hypobrycon has essentially no footprint in the aquarium trade - it remains a genus of taxonomic and regional-ichthyology interest rather than a hobby fixture. Both Hypobrycon leptorhynchus and H. maromba are Not Evaluated by the IUCN, which is typical for small, recently characterized Neotropical fishes that have not yet been formally assessed rather than a sign of any known conservation concern.
