About the genus

Hypsibarbus is a genus of large-bodied barbs, family Cyprinidae, from mainland Southeast Asia, with the atlas recording species across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Unlike the small, deep-bodied barbs familiar from the aquarium trade, Hypsibarbus species are substantial river fish, ranging from roughly 9 in up to half a metre, with the streamlined, silvery build of an open-water cyprinid suited to life in larger rivers and their tributaries.

Hypsibarbus is mostly of regional and scientific interest rather than an aquarium staple — these are food and sport fish across much of their Southeast Asian range, not typical tank subjects, and the atlas carries no common English names or CARES entries for any of its eleven species. Data on the genus are correspondingly sparse: nearly half the species are listed data deficient, with the remainder split between least concern and not evaluated, a pattern consistent with a group of river fish that have drawn less targeted survey and assessment work than smaller, more visible taxa.
