Jinshaia is a genus of hillstream loaches in the river-loach group (family Balitoridae), native to fast-flowing rocky rivers in China. The genus name honors the Jinsha River, the uppermost stretch of the Yangtze, and reflects the torrent habitat these fish are built for. The atlas's three species - Jinshaia abbreviata, J. niulanjiangensis, and J. sinensis (the Chinese hillstream loach) - run 2.5–4 in. Like other hillstream loaches, Jinshaia has a flattened, streamlined body and paired fins spread into broad, sucker-like discs that let it cling to rocks and hold position against strong current, grazing algae and biofilm from stone surfaces.
Hillstream loaches are kept by a dedicated niche of the hobby that replicates cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated stream setups - strong powerheads, smooth river rock, and lower temperatures than a standard tropical community tank - though Jinshaia specifically turns up far less often in the trade than better-known genera such as Gastromyzon or Sewellia. All three atlas species are currently listed as Not Evaluated by IUCN, so no formal conservation status is yet available for the genus.
