Acantholebias luteoflammulatus is a small annual killifish endemic to the temporary pools and roadside ditches of the lower Uruguay River basin and coastal drainages of southeastern Uruguay, where seasonal rains fill shallow, grass-fringed waters that evaporate completely each dry season. Males are strikingly patterned, carrying 6–11 dark gray to black vertical bars on flanks that fade to yellow or pale brown toward the tail — a colour scheme that gives the species its common name, the yellow-spotted pearlfish. Like all members of its genus, it completes an entire life cycle within a single wet season, burying its drought-resistant eggs in soft substrate before the pools vanish; those eggs lie in diapause through months of desiccation, hatching when rain returns. The IUCN assessed the species as Near Threatened in 2022, reflecting the precarious future of its specialised temporary-pool habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Acantholebias luteoflammulatus was described in 1964 by Vaz-Ferreira, Sierra de Soriano, and Scaglia de Paulete, and the authority is presented in parentheses because the species has been moved from its original genus since its original description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Acantholebias luteoflammulatus (Vaz-Ferreira, Sierra de Soriano & Scaglia de Paulete, 1964), placing it in the genus Austrolebias within the family Rivulidae, the South American killifishes.

The genus Austrolebias encompasses annual killifishes of the Pampas, Patagonian grasslands, and Atlantic coastal drainages of southern South America — a group shaped by millions of years of adaptation to deeply seasonal, ephemeral water. The species epithet luteoflammulatus is Latin for 'marked with yellow flames' or 'yellow-flamed', a reference to the yellowish posterior flank colouration in males. It is phylogenetically close to Austrolebias gymnoventris, and field workers in Uruguay have often recorded both species from the same region of Rocha Department.

The type locality is associated with the lower Uruguay River basin, specifically the coastal river systems draining into or near Laguna Merín in southeastern Uruguay. Population sampling from the Department of Rocha confirms the species inhabits a narrow coastal strip of eastern Uruguay, with possible extension into adjacent Rio Grande do Sul state in southern Brazil.

Morphology

Males reach up to 2.2 in total length, while FishBase records a maximum of 1.8 in TL — the difference likely reflects measurement conventions and the rapid, resource-dependent growth typical of annual killies. Females are smaller and considerably plainer in colouration, as is characteristic of sexually dimorphic annual killifishes. The body is moderately compressed and deep-bodied relative to length, typical of the Austrolebias body plan.

Male colouration is the species' most distinctive feature: the flanks carry 6–11 dark gray to black vertical bars, sharply defined against the body's base colour, while the posterior flanks and caudal region fade to yellow or pale brown. This barred-over-yellow pattern is what earned the fish its common name. Fins in males are typically darker and edged, consistent with the sexual selection pressures common in annual killifishes. Females are plain, olive-brownish, without bars or strong patterning — a camouflage strategy appropriate for a fish that spends much of its time near or in the substrate.

Habitat

Acantholebias luteoflammulatus occupies temporary freshwater pools, grassy roadside ditches, flooded low-lying pastures, and seasonal wetlands in the Department of Rocha and surrounding areas of coastal southeastern Uruguay. These habitats are shallow, often heavily vegetated at the margins with grasses and emergent macrophytes, and subject to complete drying during the austral summer and autumn. Water chemistry in such Pampean seasonal pools is generally soft to moderately hard, mildly acidic to neutral, reflecting rainfall-fed systems with limited geological buffering; temperature fluctuates considerably with seasons, typically cooler in winter-spring when the pools fill.

Field records consistently place this species in open-terrain habitats — grassy roadsides and low-lying drainage features rather than forest pools — a habitat preference shared with several other Austrolebias of the Pampas region. The temporary nature of these pools is absolute: every adult in a population dies before the pool refills the following year; the entire population overwinters as buried eggs. The lower Uruguay River basin and the coastal drainages of southeastern Uruguay that define this species' range represent a relatively small geographic footprint, making the species vulnerable to land-use change across its habitat.

Feeding

Like most Austrolebias, A. luteoflammulatus is a carnivore in the wild, feeding opportunistically on small invertebrates available in temporary pools — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton dominate the diet in such seasonal habitats. Annual killies grow fast and feed voraciously to complete their life cycle before the pool dries; the ability to convert food into reproductive output rapidly is a life-history imperative rather than a luxury.

In the aquarium the species readily accepts live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, Tubifex, and small waxworm pieces are all taken eagerly. Dry foods are accepted by some individuals but live and frozen prey produce better condition and colouration. Overfeeding should be avoided in small breeding tanks, where fouled water degrades incubating eggs.

Mating

Acantholebias luteoflammulatus is an annual killifish and a substrate-spawner whose reproductive biology revolves entirely around the temporary-pool cycle. As pools fill with spring rains and temperatures rise, males in breeding colour display intensely to females, extending fins and showing off the contrasting bar pattern. Competition between males is vigorous, and dominant males secure spawning access.

Spawning is preceded by courtship displays in which the male manoeuvres the female toward the substrate — soft mud, peat, or detritus on the pool bottom. The pair then dive together into the substrate in a characteristic 'bombing' behaviour: the male curves around the female and both fish plunge into the soft bottom, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously and burying fertilised eggs at depth. This substrate-diving behaviour is the hallmark of annual killifish reproduction and serves to place eggs below the sediment surface, protecting them from desiccation as the pool dries.

Breeding

The eggs of A. luteoflammulatus are buried in the substrate and undergo diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development that allows survival through the dry season. Diapause in annual killifish eggs is a multi-stage phenomenon: embryos may pass through two or three diapause phases (DI, DII, DIII) during development, with the depth and duration of diapause influenced by temperature and moisture. This adaptation means that not all eggs in a single clutch hatch synchronously at the first wetting — a bet-hedging strategy guarding against a brief false rain that quickly dries again.

Under typical hobby management, pairs are given peat or coir-fibre substrate in breeding tanks at 64–75 °F. After a spawning period of several weeks, the peat is removed, wrung to slightly damp, bagged, and stored at moderate temperatures (around 68 °F) for 3–6 months. Cooler storage extends the incubation period; warmer storage accelerates it. After the storage period the peat is placed in shallow warm water to trigger hatching. Fry are fast-growing, sexually mature within 5–6 weeks, and wild adults typically live 8–11 months at most — the entire wild lifespan of an adult fits between two rainy seasons.

In the aquarium

Acantholebias luteoflammulatus is rated as difficult to maintain, a reputation earned by the species' specific requirements rather than fragility per se. Aquarium temperatures should track the cool-to-moderate range appropriate for the Pampas climate: 64–75 °F is recommended, with the lower end of that range supporting better health and longer adult lifespan. Warmer conditions accelerate senescence in a species already wired for a short life. Water should be soft and mildly acidic to neutral, kept clean with regular partial changes.

Breeding pairs or trios (one male, two females) are best housed in small, dedicated tanks of 5–11 US gal with a deep layer of peat or coconut fibre on the bottom, subdued lighting, and minimal tankmates. The aggressive display of males toward each other makes mixed-male setups stressful unless tanks are large with dense cover. Adults in the hobby seldom live beyond 12–18 months under ideal conditions; the keeper's reward is the drama of an entire generation emerging from dried peat and racing to sexual maturity. The species is available through specialist killifish societies and the international killi hobby network; it is not a mainstream aquarium fish but is prized by enthusiasts for its striking male colouration.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Acantholebias luteoflammulatus as Near Threatened in May 2022, reflecting genuine concern about the stability of its small native range. The species is endemic to the lower Uruguay River basin and the coastal drainages of southeastern Uruguay — a geographically restricted area where its temporary-pool habitat faces multiple converging pressures. Agricultural intensification, particularly conversion of grassland and low-lying pastures for rice cultivation and cattle grazing, directly destroys or degrades the seasonal wetland pools on which the species depends. Drainage works that accelerate runoff and reduce pool persistence eliminate habitat more rapidly than the fish can track.

Introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis and G. holbrooki) into seasonal wetlands across South America's Southern Cone poses an additional predation and competition threat that has already contributed to the decline of other annual killifish species in the region. The Department of Rocha in eastern Uruguay contains some of the best-preserved grassland habitat in the country, including protected areas, but much of the species' known range lies outside formal protection. Given its narrow endemism and specialised habitat requirements, Acantholebias luteoflammulatus is a compelling candidate for targeted monitoring and protection of its remaining seasonal wetland pools.
