The Ibicuí annual killifish is a small, vividly coloured seasonal fish endemic to an extremely restricted cluster of temporary pools in the Rio Ibicuí drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Known from only five localities across four municipalities, it spends its active life in shallow, rain-fed marshes and pools that dry to bare mud every summer, relying entirely on buried, drought-resistant eggs to carry the next generation through the dry season. IUCN assessors rated it Endangered in 2022, citing the wholesale conversion of its wetland habitats to rice cultivation as the primary threat to its continued existence.

Matilebias ibicuiensis was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2002 and is placed in the family Rivulidae (order Cyprinodontiformes). The authority appears in parentheses in accordance with standard zoological convention, indicating that the species was originally assigned to a different genus before being transferred to Austrolebias. The Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the current valid combination as Matilebias ibicuiensis (Costa, 2002).

Some sources, including FishBase, have listed the species under the name Matilebias ibicuiensis, reflecting an unresolved generic-level debate within the Austrolebias complex. Pending formal taxonomic resolution, the name Matilebias ibicuiensis is used here consistent with the Catalog of Fishes treatment.

The species belongs to a South American lineage of annual killifishes (rivulids) whose members are united by a shared dependence on temporary, seasonally desiccating water bodies. Within Austrolebias it clusters with other annual species from the Rio Uruguai basin and the broader Pampas–Chaco seasonal pool system of southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina.

This fish was long listed as Austrolebias ibicuiensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Matilebias, and the current combination Matilebias ibicuiensis is followed here.

Morphology

Matilebias ibicuiensis is a small fish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2 in (FishBase), a size typical of the genus. The body plan follows the compressed, deep-bodied profile shared by most Austrolebias: a high back, a relatively large head, and an upturned mouth well-suited to feeding near the water surface or in shallow, root-dense water.

As in all sexually dimorphic Austrolebias, males are more brightly coloured than females. Males of annual killifishes in this genus commonly display iridescent blues, greens, or turquoises on the flanks set against dark barring or spotting — a pattern serving both species recognition and mate attraction in the brief, intense breeding window of the wet season. Females are typically drab olive-brown or yellowish-brown with variable spotting, cryptic colouration that serves as camouflage while they are vulnerable in the shallows.

Detailed morphometric data for ibicuiensis are not available in the current literature record; descriptions of closely related Austrolebias from the Rio Uruguai system indicate that fin-ray counts, scale rows, and pattern details are important in separating species within this radiation, which has diversified rapidly across the Pampas seasonal-pool landscape.

Habitat

Matilebias ibicuiensis inhabits seasonal and intermittent freshwater marshes and pools within the Rio Ibicuí-Mirim sub-drainage of the Rio Ibicuí, itself a major left-bank tributary of the Rio Uruguai in westcentral Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The IUCN assessment confirmed its presence at five localities spread across the municipalities of Santa Maria, São Pedro do Sul, São Vicente do Sul, and Toropi — an aggregate range that is exceptionally small even by the standards of annual killifish, many of which are single-locality endemics.

The pools it uses are shallow, temporary features of the Pampas landscape: rain-fed depressions, cattle-grazed wetlands, and roadside marshes that fill during the austral autumn and winter rains and dry down completely over the summer months. Bottom substrate is typically soft peat, organic mud, or fine silt — the medium in which the eggs are deposited and in which they must survive the entire dry season. Water chemistry in these pools is likely soft and acidic to neutral, consistent with the weathered, low-mineral geology of the interior Rio Grande do Sul uplands, though precise pH and hardness values are not reported in the assessed literature.

The fish are largely confined to the vegetated margins and surface layers of these ephemeral pools, which reach only a few tens of centimetres in depth at maximum fill. The entire life cycle — hatching, growth to maturity, reproduction, and death — is completed in the weeks to months between first flooding and final drying.

Feeding

Matilebias ibicuiensis, like other Austrolebias, is a carnivore feeding on the invertebrate fauna that colonises seasonal pools rapidly after flooding. The diet is assumed to include aquatic insect larvae (chironomids, culicids), small crustaceans, worms, and other microinvertebrates that proliferate in the organic-rich, shallow water of Pampas seasonal pools. Annual killifishes in this genus are visual predators, typically hunting actively near the surface or in mid-water rather than grubbing in the sediment.

In captivity, Austrolebias annual killies readily accept live and frozen foods: freshly hatched or decapsulated brine shrimp nauplii, Daphnia, chironomid (bloodworm) larvae, and Tubifex are all taken. Because individuals grow quickly and the aquarium window for this species is brief, nutritionally rich live foods that promote rapid condition and gonad development are especially important. Dried or pelleted foods are accepted less readily and should not form the sole diet.

Mating

Matilebias ibicuiensis is an annual killifish with the fully developed substrate-spawning mating system characteristic of the genus. As the pool fills and males reach breeding condition, they develop their brightest colouration and defend territories — loose patches of bottom substrate — from rival males, with displays involving lateral fin spreading, body posturing, and direct chasing. In a genus where the entire adult population may die within weeks, the pressure for rapid mate acquisition is intense, and males begin courtship almost immediately upon flooding and hatching.

Courtship follows a well-defined sequence. The male positions himself alongside or beneath the female and nudges her toward the substrate. When the female is receptive, the pair perform a spawning dive together: the male curves his body around the female in a clasping embrace and both fish plunge headfirst into the soft mud or peat, burying themselves briefly while eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into the substrate. A single spawning dive produces a small number of eggs — individual pairs dive repeatedly over a session, depositing eggs in batches across the substrate.

Breeding

The eggs of Matilebias ibicuiensis are buried in the soft bottom substrate where they were deposited during spawning dives. Once the pool begins to dry and the adults die — typically when the fish are still only weeks to a few months old — the eggs enter a state of arrested development known as diapause, a genetically programmed suspension of embryogenesis that allows the embryo to survive desiccation of the surrounding substrate for months at a time. Diapause in Austrolebias involves several distinct developmental stages at which embryogenesis can be suspended depending on the drying rate and soil moisture levels, providing redundancy against unpredictable drought patterns.

When the rains return and refill the pool, dissolved oxygen, temperature change, and light cues trigger the resumption of development and, within days to weeks, mass hatching. In the hobby, keepers replicate this cycle by spawning pairs on a peat or coconut-coir medium, drying the medium after a spawning period, storing it in sealed bags for two to four months (or longer), and then re-wetting it to stimulate hatching. Newly hatched fry of Austrolebias are typically large enough to take freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii immediately. Growth is extremely rapid — the urgency of reaching sexual maturity before the pool dries is written into the biology — and young fish can begin spawning within four to six weeks of hatching under good conditions.

Because males are aggressive toward each other and toward females outside of spawning receptivity, pairs are best conditioned separately and introduced to the spawning container for limited sessions. Multiple spawnings across several weeks maximise egg numbers before the adult fish age and decline.

In the aquarium

Matilebias ibicuiensis is not commonly available in the ornamental trade; it is primarily kept by specialist annual-killifish hobbyists who source eggs or fish through killifish associations and studbooks. The rarity and restricted wild range of the species make captive breeding programs within the hobby a genuinely meaningful contribution to conservation.

The aquarium setup follows standard practice for Pampas annual killies. A small, well-covered tank of 5–11 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group. Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, kept cool — reflecting the seasonal climate of Rio Grande do Sul, where winters are mild and summers warm but not tropical. A deep layer of peat or fine coconut-coir substrate (at least 2–3.1 in) should fill a section of the tank floor to serve as the spawning medium. Dark substrate and subdued lighting reduce stress and intensify male colouration. Live plants such as Java moss can be added for visual cover, though they are not required for spawning.

Feeding on live or frozen invertebrates is essential for conditioning spawning adults. After a spawning period of four to eight weeks, the substrate medium is removed, gently dried (not fully desiccated to dust), placed in a sealed plastic bag, and stored at room temperature for two to four months before re-wetting to hatch eggs. Because the species has a naturally short adult lifespan, the keeper is always working across multiple generations simultaneously, with eggs in storage, adults spawning, and newly hatched fry growing on.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Matilebias ibicuiensis as Endangered (EN) in 2022, reflecting its extremely restricted geographic range — five confirmed localities — and the severe pressure on its habitat from rice cultivation. Westcentral Rio Grande do Sul is one of Brazil's major rice-producing regions, and the conversion of seasonal wetlands and temporary pools to irrigated paddy fields has eliminated, drained, and fragmented precisely the ephemeral-pool landscape on which annual killies depend. The species qualifies as Endangered primarily under IUCN criterion B (small range with continuing decline in habitat quality and extent) and potentially criterion D (very small number of locations).

Beyond direct habitat loss, the intensification of agriculture brings secondary threats: agrochemical contamination of remaining pools, altered hydrology from drainage works that accelerate or prevent natural pool inundation, and the possible introduction of invasive Gambusia (mosquitofish), which compete aggressively with and prey upon annual killi fry in pools where they co-occur. The species' dependence on a very small cluster of localities means that a single drainage or contamination event could eliminate a significant proportion of the known population.

No formal ex situ conservation program appears to be in place for this species through official channels, but captive breeding by specialist killifish hobbyists — coordinated through organisations such as the American Killifish Association — represents the primary safety net for the survival of genetic material outside the wild. Given the pace of wetland loss in Rio Grande do Sul, these hobbyist networks have an unusually direct conservation value for Matilebias ibicuiensis and related Pampas annual killifishes.
