Taxonomy & naming
Anatolichthys anatoliae was described by the Hungarian naturalist Gyula Leidenfrost in 1912 from specimens collected in Anatolia, placing it in the family Aphaniidae — the Old World toothcarps, separated from the New World pupfish families in modern classifications. The authority is presented in parentheses because Leidenfrost's original generic placement has since been revised. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Anatolichthys anatoliae (Leidenfrost, 1912).
The American Killifish Association lists this species under the older synonym Anatolichthys anatoliae, reflecting a name used in some hobbyist literature before the genus Anatolichthys was synonymised with Aphanius. The genus Aphanius is currently the accepted genus for the central Mediterranean and Anatolian toothcarp clade under Catalog of Fishes.
Populations across the species' Anatolian range show notable variation in colouration and patterning — the Eğirdir, Beyşehir, and Işıklı forms have been distinguished by hobbyists, and genetic work may eventually confirm them as separate taxa. For now, all are treated as Anatolichthys anatoliae pending a comprehensive revision.
This fish was long listed as Aphanius anatoliae; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Anatolichthys, and the current combination Anatolichthys anatoliae is followed here.
Morphology
Anatolichthys anatoliae is among the larger members of its genus, reaching up to 2.17 in standard length — Seriously Fish records 1.57–2.17 in SL as the typical adult range, with FishBase citing up to 2.2 in TL for some references and up to 5.9 in TL in others (the latter figure likely reflects misidentified material or data entry error; confirmed specimens are well under 2.4 in). The body is laterally compressed, somewhat robust, and deeper-bodied than many killifishes.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and consistent across populations. Males are smaller and more boldly patterned: the flanks carry 6–10 greyish-blue vertical bars set against a pale ground colour, the anal fin is yellow with a black distal edge, and the dorsal fin darkens to near-black in spawning condition. Females are larger, with a plainer body showing dark blotches rather than bars, and a distinctive dark mark on the caudal peduncle. Colouration intensity varies by locality, providing a useful visual cue to the geographic origin of hobbyist stock.
Habitat
This species is strictly endemic to Turkey, where its native range centres on the Turkish Lakes Region (Eğirdir, Beyşehir, and Kovada lakes and their tributary systems) and extends to the closed drainage of the Lake Tuz basin, including the saline springs that feed its margins. It has also been recorded from the Işıklı Lake system in the Büyük Menderes drainage of western Anatolia.
Habitat types span freshwater springs and spring-fed streams, shallow lake margins with emergent and submerged vegetation, slow-moving irrigation canals where it has persisted after abstraction emptied its source waters, and mildly brackish or saline spring outflows near Lake Tuz. Seriously Fish records the physico-chemical envelope as pH 7.0–8.5 and total hardness 179–536 ppm — hard to very hard, alkaline water reflecting the calcareous geology of the Anatolian plateau. Temperature tolerance is exceptionally wide: the species survives near 36 °F in winter and up to 86 °F in summer, and this thermal flexibility underpins its persistence in seasonally extreme, shallow habitats.
The fish shows a preference for vegetated margins and areas with filamentous algae or rooted aquatic plants, both as spawning substrate and as cover from avian predators. Open sandy or rocky substrates are used less. Some relict populations have shifted entirely to irrigation canals — a 1996 rediscovery documented fish living in agricultural channels long after disappearing from the lakes themselves.
Feeding
Anatolichthys anatoliae is carnivorous, targeting small invertebrates, zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, and other small animals it can locate among vegetation or in the water column. Fishipedia characterises the diet as carnivorous, consistent with the broader Aphanius feeding ecology of opportunistic predation on whatever invertebrate prey is available at each season.
In captivity the species adapts readily to live and frozen foods — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, bloodworm, and small frozen invertebrate mixes — and can be conditioned onto good-quality dried foods with patience. Varied feeding with a protein-rich diet promotes good colour in males and supports fecundity in females. Like many toothcarps it will also browse on algae and biofilm, making a lightly planted tank with some algal growth a closer approximation of its natural feeding environment.
Mating
Anatolichthys anatoliae is a non-annual, fractional spawner — a fish of permanent and near-permanent waters that breeds continuously through the warm season rather than producing a single seasonal cohort. Seriously Fish records the spawning season as April through September, with pairs engaging repeatedly over this extended window. This life-history strategy contrasts sharply with the annual Nothobranchius and Austrolebias killifishes of temporary African and South American pools, which produce one clutch of diapausing eggs before the habitat dries.
Males display actively to females, presenting their barred flanks and dark fins to prospective mates. The mating system is polygamous: males compete for access to multiple females, and spawning is not monogamously pair-bonded. Fishipedia notes that males are sometimes aggressive toward each other and occasionally toward females; providing a male-to-female ratio of at least 1:2 in aquaria reduces harassment.
Breeding
Spawning is a plant- or filament-contact event. The pair align alongside a suitable substrate — filamentous algae, fine-leaved aquatic plants, or floating spawning mops in captivity — and release small batches of adhesive eggs that stick to the substrate. Each spawning contact produces a few eggs; the female deposits eggs at intervals over days and weeks rather than in a single clutch. Seriously Fish records egg incubation at 7–14 days at typical ambient temperatures, with fry emerging ready to accept Artemia nauplii from first feeding.
Because spawning is fractional and extended over months, fry appear at different sizes across the season. In an aquarium context, regular collection of mops or transfer of plant clumps to a separate container prevents adults from eating newly deposited eggs. Eggs are semi-transparent and small; gentle incubation in shallow water with minimal fungal contamination produces good hatch rates. The fry are robust compared with many killifish; they grow steadily on nauplii and finely chopped invertebrates and reach sexual maturity within several months.
In the aquarium
Despite being a threatened wild fish, Anatolichthys anatoliae is established in the specialist killifish hobby and captive populations exist through networks such as the American Killifish Association. It is an undemanding fish in terms of water chemistry provided the hobbyist respects its hard, alkaline preference: pH 7.0–8.5, moderately hard to hard water, and a temperature range that can follow seasonal fluctuations (50–77 °F is a practical aquarium range; a winter cool-down to around 54–59 °F is beneficial for long-term health and spawning stimulus the following spring).
A modestly sized species tank of 23.6–31.5 in is sufficient for a group. Heavy planting with fine-leaved or filamentous plants — Java moss, Ceratophyllum, or spawning mops — serves both as spawning substrate and as cover that allows females to escape persistent males. The fish are active swimmers and appreciate open space alongside planted areas. Tankmates should be chosen with care: fish requiring soft or acidic water are incompatible, and small, slow-moving fish may be nipped. Conspecific groups work best with a skewed sex ratio favouring females.
Because some wild populations have been extirpated and others are fragile, hobbyists keeping this species are encouraged to maintain accurate locality records for their stock and to participate in AKA studbook programmes. Captive breeding for conservation backup has been discussed in European and North American killifish circles, and this fish's robustness and willingness to spawn make it a practical candidate.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Anatolichthys anatoliae as Near Threatened (NT) in a 2013 evaluation by Freyhof, reflecting a documented pattern of localised extinctions and declining populations across its restricted Anatolian range. The species has been extirpated from Lakes Ak, Yarışlı, Gölhisar, and Söğüt, and populations in its core range in the Turkish Lakes Region are under pressure from multiple converging threats.
Water abstraction for agriculture is the dominant driver of habitat loss: spring-fed systems and shallow lake margins — the precise habitats this species depends on — are first to dry when aquifer drawdown or irrigation diversion reduces inflow. Lake Tuz, historically one of the key systems in its range, is a saline terminal lake whose margins are sensitive to any reduction in freshwater spring inflows. Pollution from agricultural run-off adds additional chronic stress. The introduction of predatory fish species — including pike-perch, bass, and other sportfish into Turkish lakes — has caused serious declines in remnant populations; small-bodied, slow-moving killies are highly vulnerable to gape-limited predators.
Some populations have survived in irrigation canals, suggesting a degree of adaptability to modified habitats, but canal maintenance and pesticide use make these refugia insecure. The species' thermal tolerance and hardiness give it some buffer against climate-related drying, but not against the structural loss of spring-fed water altogether. A precautionary uplisting to Vulnerable would be warranted if population-trend data were updated from the 2013 baseline.
